Hello.

went into msconfig this morning to see what was taking my computer so long to reboot.

there are a lot of things I don't recognize.....I will try to google them ...one by one ...to see if they should be there.

Anyone know what this is....iridium.......the google answer is confusing to me....sounds like it is for a laptop ???

any help will be appreciated.

Sounds like a modem software from a quick search.
Perhaps use windows search feature for the work iridium and check the advanced option. Then when it finds it, hilite and choose properties to see what it is.

Discovered some iridium at Majorgeeks.com --- a small program for determining time in parts of the world, a Mac utility program, and a reinstaller for Quicktime. Do a search at majorgeeks.com and see the answers. There was no warning about viruses, trojans, or trackers.

I don't see any Malware / virus. But we are only looking at a hijackthis log from Safe Mode, and Malwarebytes only ran for 14 Mins? I see an out of date computer. adobe 7! Java 1.5! IE6! Then McAfee is that up to date? For starters I would go into your add/remove programs list and remove Adobe. We can get you another reader later. Then remove all versions of Java from the add / remove programs. The only version there should be Version 6 u_18. Remove all others. Then install IE7, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=9AE91EBE-3385-447C-8A30-081805B2F90B&displaylang=en You said yourself your getting Internet Explorer is not responding errors Then I would download Avast 5.0, to the desktop, don't install it yet. http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download Now I would run the McAfee removal tool, http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507 When that finishes double click the Avast that you downloaded before and install it AND SCAN WITH IT TOO. After we can remove some 04 entries in hijackthis log. Unnecessary Start ups. Up date Java , Get a reader program for pdf files. Run some cleaners, ccleaner ect. Good luck you have a lot to do. Don't surf The Internet in Safe Mode no Virus protection in that mode....Just go to links provided and get Avast installed after McAfee is removed.

stargazer if you click on blackvipers site on the version of Windows you have it takes you to the page for that list of services, then there it list all services you might find on a pc, he then gives a list of if it can be set to manual, auto, disabled etc, this is doing it through services rather than msconfig which is a better way to do it and that way sets it for all users. all versions of XP x86 (32-bit) running Service Pack 3 that would be the link for anyone running xp service pack3 Configuration Information he explains the various options on settings, and also explains how to find the services area to do the changes. Service Configurations under that heading you will see the full list of services you might find listed on your pc, to the right of each service name you look for your particular version of XP, Home, Pro which will be most people, then see what he suggest under that heading for each service if he says manual set it to manual if it says disable that means it can be set to disable, if he says auto it should be set to auto. I didn't know of that update. Downloaded it but it doesn't install. ???!!! My original was 8.0 already on the machine. I had previusly updated that to 8.5. Uninstalled that. Got a new disk with 8.5 and installed that. Perhaps it doesn't need that update (KB9338288). ================================================== AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Got it!!!!! I finally realized the uninstall process was not removing the Calendar file with my input info. Also that the new install must have been picking it up. I finally found it and deleted it separately. Perhaps renaming it would have also worked. Then did a complete new install off the CD. All the SS and DS files function properly as well. That file is Mswkscal.wcd located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Works I just tried it out and the wkcalrem item is back in the System Config Utility =============================== My event viewer shows this all started on April 13. Only 6 days to figure it out. Not too bad. :-)

you can look any of those up on google and find what type of process they are. ypager is yahoo messenger ctfmon= When you run a Microsoft Office XP program, the file Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon) runs in the background, even after you quit all Office programs. Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies. qtask.exe is a feature from Quicken which displays desktop alerts and tasks. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference. I will include a link to a process library you can save that link and look any process up there in the future. I guess I will just leave it there.....I'm not having any problems...so in this situation I'll apply the old saying....."If it ain't broke....don't fix it".....haha

Dell and I just reformatted my computer last week, and now it reboots quite quickly.
I see there are only 11 things in the startup and only 6 are checked.
I wonder what 'bad' things might happen if one unchecks something that needs (?) to be checked.

I see there are 2 Yahoo msg...one is checked and the other isn't...wonder what is up with that? I think I will make both of them unchecked.

Maybe someone will comment on me trying to 'fix' things that aren't broken...thus not hijacking your thread.

You really need to tell us the exact letters of the item you are speaking about as they are displayed in the Msconfig window, for now don't ever shut anything off unless you know what it is, or the associated program will not work, I bet that other yahoo Item is an update program. Really should not need any yahoo item running at start up, you can start yahoo mesg. up yourself.
