Uninstall clean-up, good idea?

The recent go-around on Java and its removal/uninstall caused me to look at the software installed on one of my XP systems. Some I have no idea what it is, other such as Google Chrome I know is a browser. One thing in common besides being installed on my computer I can not remember ever taking action to install or approve installation of this stuff. Is it a good idea to sweep "stuff" like this out? The risk is the "stuff" is needed and I just didn't know it. A caution may be to establish a "restore point" before removing then watch to see if a problem develops, and if so do a restore.

For starters I will uninstall Google Chrome - it is just another browser, right?

Jerry....Chrome Google is a good browser to have if you still have Windows XP....see my message on Java corruption...

Thanks, I do understand it is a good browser, but enough better than Firefox to go through the learning? I have IE on my computer too, and I think there is some reason to remove it except MS Update requires it, right? But, how much longer will MS provide updates for XP? They stopped updates to IE with IE6 (is it?). I have IE on my Windows 7 too, because of update requirements.

I understand, Seil. More than 25 years ago, I would leave an overhead, oscillating sprinkler going over large areas of my Newhall garden, requesting the community gardening staff to turn them off when they left for the day, on triple digit days. The horse manure mulch disappeared quickly. The foliage was huge, plants even more so, and they flowered amazingly. Water was cheap and plentiful, so not an issue there and then. There were no disease or insect issues. The plants were fully clothed in very dense, durable foliage and there was no such thing as sun scald nor Flat Headed Apple Borers which became great issues once that type of watering had to be discontinued due to availability and cost. Black spot and mites were frequent issues with the own root plants we propagated as volunteers at The Huntington. I learned early when bringing home any new plant such as those to pull off all of the foliage before bringing it into the garden. I had an area in filtered sun under a tree where I kept a pile of horse manure. I'd clump the newly arrived own roots in their pots together, surround and fill between them with the manure, often inside them as mulch, then overhead water until new foliage began developing. No mites, no diseases and the plants exploded into growth quickly. A bit of hardening them off in larger cans and higher levels of heat and light and they were ready for planting once they'd filled the five gallon cans. Growing them up in larger cans also permitted me to move them around to see what position was best to their liking. It often made quite a difference. At the beach, I had a number of customers who regularly used my "proprietary blend" of Ultra Fine and Miracle Grow sprayed every two weeks except between the middle of July through the middle of October. In the Perma Fog, it prevented disease, eliminated the constant aphids and saw flies and kept really terrible things there, like one lady's beloved and hated Paul Neyron, viable. He caught her heart in books and she was determined to grow him. He languished until I suggested the Ultra Fine and MG foliar application. She had severe bronchitis, but made sure she brought me a bouquet of beautiful Paul Neyron from her bush! Used during the heat, that mixture did burn, but when there weren't heat and light intensities to contend with, it worked wonders. NO way I could have ever used it in any garden at home! I tried it once, learned my lesson the hard way right there and then! Anything presented as being even slightly phytotoxic WILL burn here. I am in total agreement with your walking the roses daily. I can't imagine having them unless I wanted to walk them every chance I got. Each has its own personality, likes, dislikes, needs and will quickly let you know if you don't provide them. It's the best way not only to head off problems early, but also to detect sports. They can happen so quickly right in front of you and seemingly behind your back. Revo Uninstaller - good or not?

REVO is a fine application, but let's slow the train down just a bit for a first time user. No application is 100%. For best results use REVO in the Advanced Mode. It will first create a Windows restore point. Then it will run the target application's on-board uninstaller. This will be followed by a REVO scan of the system for orphan files. This scan will be presented to the user in a report with options to delete or not. I have always selected and deleted everything without a concern. Finally, REVO will scan the registry for orphan entries. Again a report will be presented to the user with the option to delete or not. This is were it gets a little tricky as I have seen on rare occasion entries reported in error. Either ignore the report and move past, or be absolutely certain the entries you select are for the target application. No guessing is allowed here. Please be aware that quite often the scan of the system and/or registry will come up clean. If you have CCleaner installed on your system this is one of a few times I suggest running its registry tool for anything missed. Again, no guessing and be sure to use the backup offering. The START>Search suggestion is a good one too for a final clean up. DA

Thanks for all of your thoughts! Mamadadapaige & Desertsteph: My off-to-college kids are my girls, and the lack of laundry floating around here now is a silver lining given their absence! But, my son leaving? Can't go there yet! He may require at least 10 minutes? Desertsteph - I'm 5'2". Glad to hear your shallower sink works for you. A shallower sink might be an answer for me. I don't like leaning over for an under-mount, deeper sink, but I DO like being able to keep dishes out of view when needed. I've never had a farmhouse style sink, but it seems that one would mean less leaning...? Drachiele - You make beautiful sinks, and I'm sure you've done lots of research on both sinks and faucets. Your explanation of how the aerator in a faucet would affect splashing makes a whole lot of sense. We are currently planning a Waterstone Fulton faucet on the main kitchen sink. Is there a number or something online that I look at that determines how effective an aerator is? Somewhat like how a stainless sink would be measured by the 14/16/18/etc gauge? Anybody have any thoughts on how easy/hard it would be to keep a solid granite sink looking good over many years?

Jerry....nj.....you should have two browsers on your computer I have been told.. It is a matter of preference...if you like Firefox stay with it. I have always had Internet Explorer and like it....but because I have one computer that still has XP...I was told to change my browser to Chrome Google or Firefox.....so I change it to Chrome Google but still have IE 8.0.

As a matter of fact, I just received an Windows Update for IE 8.0. Read my comments on Java corruption...World start says that Microsoft will be supporting XP...until 2014...soooooo I am keep XP on this computer.....

Hi Jerry nj,

Post the log report for us, it will show us what's installed, and Hard disk space too,

Please download MiniToolBox http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/MiniToolBox.exe and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
1. List last 10 Event Viewer log
2. List Installed Programs
3. List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

That will give us all a good overall view of what is installed, we could go from there as far as what you wanted to uninstall.

When you click on my link a box will pop up right here on the forum, save the file to you desktop, then double click it to run it.

good idea Joe! that way we know if it's something that can be safely removed.

As long as you have a second browser you are good.
As to xp support, the support till 2014 is only for xp with sp3. Earlier versions do not have that option. If your xp doesn't have service pack 3 you can install it so your xp will continue to have updates.
Xp will support IE8 and that's what should be on any xp system whether you use IE or not that is for security reasons. IE is a part of windows so no you don't remove it. And yes it is used to go to the windows updates site.

Bad idea. I wouldn't. I subscribe to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. Why risk an otherwise avoidable problem that results from unnecessary tinkering?

I'll assume you use a top rated antivirus program, you avoid unnecessary (and unknown) downloads, and you don't visit high risk sites. If so, you can assume your antivirus program does a better job than you can of identifying "problems" to remove, and it's already done so.

When a PC is performing to the user's satisfaction, I say leave it alone.

If it is just general commercial software there is nothing wrong with removing unwanted applications. If you are not sure than don't. If you do decide to remove some just do a few every so often and monitor your system after.

Do you by chance have an existing Belarc on your system? I ask as the report it generates includes a section called Software Versions and Usage. It has usage increments to over one year ago.

Not sure where to start, thanks for all the interest. I didn't have a general clean-up in mind that was more of a catchy subject line to highlight the general nature of my question about Google Chrome. This specific interest stems from my general feeling of caution about Google and other over sized success stories, I don't use Facebook. Google seems to have a lot of inroads to computers through serving ISP and through other application - such as add-ons to other browsers. On updates I try to refuse add-ons, the existing tools are more than I have time/interest in using.

I am on my newer Windows 7 64Bit machine at the minute so I can't "grab" the subject list of programs installed. I can say I did check IE on the XP and see it is IE8, not IE6. The W7 system does have Belarc Adviser and on checking for updates I see I hadn't updated it in over a year. I ran it on the W7 computer and I spewed out an immense amount of information on my system - scary.

Another batch of programs that I wonder about is the MS Framework, looking this seems not to be the case on the W7 computer but the W7 has 13 entries for various Visual C++ dating back to 2005. Do all of those need to be maintained? If the C++ is used it is by the W7 OS, I haven't knowingly used the C language since years as a programer ended in 1977. Then I was using C (no +) and I assume that is the where C+ came from - but I don't know for sure. It appears that when an update is installed on this type software the old versions are left on the system. Given the huge HDD capacities now available I suppose it doesn't matter if there are a few GB of stuff stored that isn't being used.

Good thinking.

You might see if you have IE9 on the Win7 confuser, that way it can interpret HTML5 as it becomes more widespread.
