Windows did not recognize directory......

My pc is a Dell Dimension XPS T700r, running Windows 2000, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird.

For starts, I am pc dummy.....can use email, search for stuff but other than that have no clue.

This morning when I turned on the pc there was a screen saying Windows 2000 was updating and would automatically restart, it did it's thing and restarted.

To my surprise the desktop had been cleaned off, shortcuts in task bar gone. It said I could access programs via the start menu. That is how I am on internet right now.

Cannot access email, wants to do a Wizard setup just like I was new. Bookmarks and addresses are gone.

A glitch happened last year and was a pain for my son to figure out and fix. He lives in another state now, sooo.....mom has no one to bail her out. My son thinks it is the same glitch this time, not recognizing the directory.

Being a pc dummy what can I do to fix the problem or how do I find someone reliable to fix it for me and what price could I expect to pay?

See if you can boot into save mode not sure what the options are in 2000 but you will look for a restore function something like that, I don't think 2000 has a System Restore like xp heres is directions for entering the Safe Mode, let us know what options are present:

#1 Restart your computer.

When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. When that is completed it will start loading Windows.

When you see the screen that has a black and white bar at the bottom stating "Starting Windows", tap the F8 key repeatedly until you get to the Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu At this menu use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode option, which is usually the first in the list.
Press the enter key.

Your computer will continue booting, but now will boot into Safe Mode.

Thanks for your help. Our son who lives 1 1/2 hrs. away came down and got my pc up and running again (not back to normal but can use it). However, the only cure is to get a new pc which should be here in about a week. Hopefully a new pc with Windows XP will not have the same glitches. Our current pcs are 7 years old.

Apparently when Windows 2000 did the automatic upgrade it dumped everything into a file (one it did not belong) toss salad fashion and did not put things back after the upgrade. My bookmarks were found and email established again but the email addresses and folders are still lost, who knows where they were dumped.

My husband and I have the exact same computers, set up by the same person and his never has a problem. Well.....a different story for me, this is the second time for this glitch to occur in a year and have had other issues off and on.

I have the exact same computer and I run several spyware scanners along with Avast anti-virus. No problems at all. One program I highly recommend that combines anti-spyware, temp file cleaner, registry cleaner, and a couple of other things is Advanced Windows Care. I keep it updated and run it about once every 10 days or so. It is not an anti-virus program. Give it a try and see how you like it. The link is for the free personal version. mike_kaiser And genes, Thank you so very much for responding. Sorry about my delay with a response but I was waiting for my actual laptop to get back. Was on another computer yesterday while my son had my laptop for work (he dropped his) but wanted the actual laptop with the problem in case there was someting else suggested here to try. I went to the product page as you suggested, mike_kaiser, but the driver listed is exactly the same one that is listed in my Device Manager so I didn't bother with that. No exclamations on any of the things in device manager---I even clicked each one to open each one all the way to see what was inside each main title. Yes, I rebooted several times. I even raised my virtual memory because I had received a message that it was too low while I was scrolling around Ebay. I rebooted after raising the virtual memory but still the little slot won't acknowledge the SD card. The little light on the slot does flicker. I guess that means it's working? genes, No, I haven't tried another SD card. But yesterday my neighbor took my SD card and loaded the photos on her computer. She said she is coming over today with a little mini flash drive (?) that I can stick in my laptop and download the photos to this laptop that way. This means the SD card itself isn't broken, right? Thanks everyone for your suggestions. My DH now informed me this morning that he thinks it might be to busy when the panels are pulled closed (I wasn't going to pull the bay drapes closed). I think I am going to call back the fabric center and see if they will give me a refund, and start over. I am going to find a fabric I love, even if it means painting the kitchen over again. We are at the end of our small remodel, but the fun has gone out of it. By what many others have told me I am a fine seamstress, but I sure cannot pick fabric for my dining area drapes. I guess I am just feeling extra discouraged this morning. Thanks again for trying to help me. If you have anymore suggestions of what I should be looking for in a dining area drape, please feel free to let me know. I need to find a good book, or website that explains what I should be looking for when trying to decorate this simple area. Jane

Still no answer from A&M. Many more of my hosta have signs of the same problem. It's probably some sclerotenia fungi (Southern blight is sclerotenia rolfsii). There are several others. I'm just figuring out what is what. Apparently, the cool wet spring we had gave the fungi the perfect place to grow. Couple that with several hosta that needed repotting that didn't get it and are too deep in the pot (no enough circulation). Adding bark mulch to my sterile potting soil introduced the pathogen. We had the right temperatures and high humidity that ifungi love in the early to mid spring.with rain every day (same with nematodes) Then we went from 80 degree days to 100 almost immediately, which stressed the plants. That's my working theory, anyway. I'm still trying to identify the exact pathogens I have and if there are any chemical controls After heat treating some plants for nems a couple of weeks ago, I don't think it's a good idea to stress the plants any more than they already are. Bare rooting them at 100 degrees is probably not a good idea. The treatment will kill them if the disease doesn't. I've drenching them with fungicide, and will follow that up with different fungicide in a few days. When it cools off, I'll do what ever I can to treat them. . This is what I found in pots that look perfectly healthy from the top. I found this in Striptease, which I think I indication of another sclerotinia fungus. It's bits of soil and leaf strung together with really thin cottony threadlike material. If I'm guessing correctly, it's sclerotenia sclerotiorum, which is a cousin to southern blight. If I don't hear from A&M by tomorrow afternoon, everything will get a fungicide drench. I'll try to contain it until it cools off and then try to treat. bk

I have seen that happen before. Usually it is either infected with a virus or the hard drive is starting to go bad. Drives are fairly cheap, At 7 years old though, it may be time to invest in another machine.
