windows photo gallery won't recognize media card

I put my media card in.Red light lit but the computer doesn't recognize it.Desktop Vista.I had this problem quite a while back but can't remember how I fixed it.I've tried different cards.System restored back a few days.Maybe not far enough back.It has been several days since I last put any photos on .

With your media card in the computer, go to "Computer", open that and it should show the card listed in there. You can double click on it and open to see your pics and save etc.

Can you try it on another computer, and is it recognized there ?
You need to figure out first if it's the card or a computer problem.

System Restore shouldn't have any effect either way.

Shaxhome's suggestion is right though - see if it's recognized by the computer in Explorer first to determine if it's an issue with the computer or Windows Photo Gallery.
If it doesn't come up in Explorer, then try it on another computer.

Owbist, thank you for your response. With the computer turned on I connect the camera through the USB port. I turn on the camera and I get no response from the computer, whatsoever. I think the cable I have is alright because my old Windows 98 computer finds the camera. I have three USB ports on the front of the XP computer and have tried all three with no success. I will try the back as you have suggested. I will be visiting my parents later this afternoon and I will try the camera on their computer. As far as the software goes, I did install it but I think the software is just photo editing software. (The video camera also takes still pictures and stores them on an SD card) I don't think the CD actually had a driver on it. I will check out the web site to download a driver. The camera is a tape storage model #GR-D37Ou Thanks.

yes the old ones will not read the newer SDHC cards just go buy a usb card reader that will take SDHC cards they are very cheap, I picked one up at Big Lots for $6 and one at walmart for under $10. Just make sure it lists SDHC on the list of what it will use. It just plugs into your usb port when you need to use it. I would not worry with installing one since these are so easy to get and cheap.Just make sure it uses usb2.0 there are tons of them on amazon from $2 up.

The label says it has 512 MB of memory. I'm not sure which memory this is referring to, but if it is the RAM on the motherboard, it could use an upgrade. Windows XP likes to have 2 Gigabyte (2 GB) or more. You are using a wireless router on a DSL sevice. Make sure that your wireless router is secured so that someone else within range can't horn in and ride piggyback on your connection for free. The more computers using the connection, the slower it gets for any one computer. The next potential bottle neck is the DSL service. If this is over a phone line, it may not be a large jump in speed over a standard dial-up service. A good connection does have marked improvement in speed, but a troublesome connection looses much speed advantge. Consider taking the computer to a shop or friend and try on their lines. Another problem, if over a phone line, is a noisy line. Thw phone company can test your phone line for quality. Make sure that you tell the technicam that this line will be used for internet service. If over a phone line, another bottleneck can be the phone company. It may not have installed equipemnt capable of high speed data transfer. If you have a friend who has a high speed cable connection with a wireless router, you may want to try your computer on his connection. Have the computer checked out at a computer shop to discover if it is the computer or the DSL service to your house.

mike_kaiser And genes, Thank you so very much for responding. Sorry about my delay with a response but I was waiting for my actual laptop to get back. Was on another computer yesterday while my son had my laptop for work (he dropped his) but wanted the actual laptop with the problem in case there was someting else suggested here to try. I went to the product page as you suggested, mike_kaiser, but the driver listed is exactly the same one that is listed in my Device Manager so I didn't bother with that. No exclamations on any of the things in device manager---I even clicked each one to open each one all the way to see what was inside each main title. Yes, I rebooted several times. I even raised my virtual memory because I had received a message that it was too low while I was scrolling around Ebay. I rebooted after raising the virtual memory but still the little slot won't acknowledge the SD card. The little light on the slot does flicker. I guess that means it's working? genes, No, I haven't tried another SD card. But yesterday my neighbor took my SD card and loaded the photos on her computer. She said she is coming over today with a little mini flash drive (?) that I can stick in my laptop and download the photos to this laptop that way. This means the SD card itself isn't broken, right? Again, Thanks to both of you for responding!

I've tried several media cards.I went to "ciomputer"Clicked on any "removable discs" listed.Every card I have can't be bad & I have no way to check on another computer for the present,anyway.I've put cards in & out many times & nothing,nada.

Did you recently use the "Safe to Remove" utility located on the Notification Area? Did you try rebooting the system to remedy this concern? I ask as my prior Vista system would occasionally stop reading cards/thumb drives after using the utility. A reboot cured the concern.

Ok, sounds like it's the computer.

It must be my computer. .I've done everything suggested & card still won't register.Can I get a separate card reader ?
I might have to break down & replace my 7 year old dinosaur..I so love Vista's windows photo capabilities.

A separate card reader that plugs into USB would be a good test actually.
You can get them for cheap on Amazon, Newegg, and Ebay.

[ If you're really thinking about buying another computer, I was going to say you might want to wait for Windows 10, as it will no doubt be an improvement over the confusing interface of Win 8.
(The version name of Windows 9 is going to be skipped)
But that is reportedly not going to be released until late 2015 .
So I'd make sure I was at least getting a free upgrade to Win 10 when it arrives. ]

One other thing that could have happened is that the cable connecting the existing card reader to the motherboard has come loose.

To fix that you'd have to open up the computer and check.
It's pretty easy, but sometimes the connection at the front panel, internally, is a little hard to get to. Not too hard to check though, and low risk as well.

If you can, when you're in there you could pull off the cable and reset it in case some kind of oxidation has messed up the electrical connection.

I had hubby take it apart.Everything looked OK.Now,would the separate card reader plug into my computer & do the job. ?I tried out a used computer that didn't have the card slots & guy gave me a separate reader.I didn't get around to using it.Guy at computer store told me that 1 of these days something will break on my dinosaur & I will be forced to change.Sad day!

I have had this happen more than once on both XP and Vista. In my case, the card wasnt seated quite right in the card reader. Give the card an extra push, and see if it will finally register in my computer, Good Luck.

I tried several cards.Pushed,twisted,took out & reinserted.Looked inside at wiring.Followed a You tube tutorial,all to no avail.Just stopped in & got a media card reader that plugs in & I'm back in business.
Now I can keep Old Faithful here for awhile longer!
