Computer won't find video camera

A month ago I bought a new JVC digital video camera. During christmas I took a few videos and I want to put them on my computer. I plugged the camera into the USB port but absolutely nothing happens. I know the port on the computer is ok because my digital camera works just fine. I plugged the video camera into my old windows 98 computer and it found the device right away. Of cours, it said the device is unknown. Therefore, I do believe the camera is working fine.

I am running Windows XP media edition. Anyone have any ideas what I should look into?

Well after almost a day with no response I'll offer some ideas. The camera and computer work so it seems it is somewhere in the connection. Have you tried a different cable to connect the two? Have you tried a different USB port on the computer? I find I get better performance sometimes from the rear ports than I do from those on the front, no idea why. Is the camera turned on? I read on the JVC site that the camera should be turned on even to insert a tape. Have you installed the software that came with it or downloaded updated drives from JVC?

You did not give a model number so is this a tape storage model or DVD? If it is a DVD type then you could insert the disk in the DVD player if you have one on the computer.

Any of that do the trick?

Owbist, thank you for your response.

With the computer turned on I connect the camera through the USB port. I turn on the camera and I get no response from the computer, whatsoever.

I think the cable I have is alright because my old Windows 98 computer finds the camera. I have three USB ports on the front of the XP computer and have tried all three with no success. I will try the back as you have suggested. I will be visiting my parents later this afternoon and I will try the camera on their computer.
As far as the software goes, I did install it but I think the software is just photo editing software. (The video camera also takes still pictures and stores them on an SD card) I don't think the CD actually had a driver on it. I will check out the web site to download a driver.

What kind of work did the computer shop do for you? By accident, because of my lack of knowledge, I did a Destructive Recovery when I was stuck on a black screen with white lettering I couldn't get out of. It brought me back to day one with problems that were fixed via Gateway phone support which is no longer. One being not able to do windows updates and a shut down time problem. They were supposed to see if they could fix that and do all updates for windows and the drivers. The computer (Win XPPRO) was brought in to find the cause of a sound that just started happening like a whirring speed up then down then steady starting after the computer is on for 7 minutes. They said the heat sync fan/fans are OK and unplugged my floppy drive thinking it was that when the floppy had been known to make a short noise when I first used it when I bought the computer back in 2004 but hadn't since. A noise like it may have been trying to read? That was not the noise I meant. Also is it possible the tech installed a new video card and disabled the onboard video in the BIOS? In this case you should see a different video connection lower down the rear of the tower which you would need to connect to. Is that the socket I plug my monitor into as I noticed I could not push it in all the way to hide the silver part I thought did before? Then screw each side tight. Is that it? If so, I bet they did but WHY? Before I brought it in, everything worked fine except because of the Recovery two problems came back that had been corrected by Gateway I wanted fixed again and I was concerned about a noise that recently appeared, me thinking it was my HD or the sync fan.

I've tinkered with several bundled software packages and they are far from junk. Yes, if a user has too many installed they can step on one another. However, to use a broad paint brush to condemn all applications and declare card readers the absolute messiah to photo transfers is a stretch. In all, a card reader is a quality viable option. In my mind what bundled software actually are are self-serving for the manufacturer, "lite" applications and redundant. I've only ever kept one which I found easy to use to stitch panoramas. For most amateurs like myself free applications like Irfanview and Picasa are more than adequate. Installing the camera driver is absolutely a minor task and historically safe. In fact, it is not harder than installing any other driver. Since as a reader I had no knowledge to the experience and the financial well-being of the poster as I normally try to do stayed within the parameters of the thread rather than forcing the writer off the original question. Though I have God knows how many card readers on the front of my system I personally find for my use connecting the transfer wire faster and easier. 1-2-3. Nothing to it. DA

Hi Kudzu9, The next time you want the pictures to stay on the camera, simply copy them to the computer. The picture's were on the camera and I transfered 6 picture's from my camera to the computer. With this camera I can put a lock on them to keep from losing them by mistake. I always lock them in, but for some reason I over looked 2 pictures and forgot to put the lock on them. When I put them in the computer, 2 of them were not locked, had they been locked they would have stayed in the cameras memory card. There is nothing unique about it just because it is camera memory. I understand where you are coming from and you probably are more familiar with the digital camera than I am because when they first came out I didn't go out and purchase one right away, I was still using my old style camera. When I purchased my HP Printer I have never had a reason to use the slots for the memory card until now. For you it isn't unique because there are a lot more of them out there now. I am still learning about my camera and the software that came with it and as I learn I become more familiar with it too, it takes time but, I will eventually master how it works and if I run into a problem like I did this time, I trust that I can come here and get excellent help from you all. It's nice to know that there are other ways to do things in case you have to go that way and I saved your information just in case I would have to go that way. When my 2 youngest grand children were just little tykes I could take well over 150 photos in an afternoon and evening. Many were garbage as I kept the camera on my knee clicking when they presented a suitable shot. I have two young grandchildren ages 8 and 3 years and I take a lot of pictures of them also but, if I don't like what I see I have the option to erase them at that moment and start over. Why save them if they aren't any good right? You must be well coordinated to be able to keep the camera on your knee, if that were me I would be dropping it and getting pictures of the ground instead of the kids. "LOL" Because of that I went out and bought a small tripod for the camera (it also takes videos)and that way I can get better shots or take a video if I want to. It helps. Working with video, even just converting it from one format to another is extremely taxing on the computer requires a fairly large amount of memory. With 256 MB of ram, my first thought is that your computer is paging constantly to the hard drive. If your hard drive is almost full or extremely fragmented, your system will lock up and crash. Let me explain. If I told you I was going to give you a ten digit phone number (area code + number) and asked you to remember it for a few minutes, you'd probably be able to do this from memory. Now If I told you that I was going to give you 5 ten digit phone numbers and asked you to do the same, what would you do? You'd most likely need to write it down on paper to be able to give it back to me. Right? This is the same thing that happens with the computer. The computer uses the ram in the same way you'd be able to memorize the first number. When it runs out of ram to do this, it needs to jot the information down, temporarily. It does this on a hard drive with what is called a paging file. Under default settings, the paging file size is managed by the operating system. If your computers hard drive is full to the point that the paging file is not what the operating system requires it will most likely crash. This can also happen with a heavily fragmented hard drive. Anyway, I went on a tangent there. I would recommend that you increase your system ram. The more the better, especially if your going to work with video. To get info on hard drive. Click my computer, then right click on your "C" drive and select properties. It will show you a graphical representation of the hard drive with free and used space. From this box you can select the "tools" tab and then the "defragment" utility to defrag the hard drive. Note that with 256 MB of ram, it will take an extremely long time if the hard drive is heavily fragmented and there is even the possibility it will crash. Do this overnight. The information on the video card can be found in the device manager located in the system properties which can be accessed int eh control panel. Control panel - system - hardware - device manager. Select display drivers - then your video card should show.

Well, I tried the camera on my parents computer with no luck. It's got to be something with the camera. I just don't understand why Windows 98 can find it but two computers running XP can't.

I visited the JVC web site looking for a driver to download. How am I to know which driver I need? For me, that web site is no help at all. Maybe I just don't know where to look. I did send an email to customer support and should receive an answer back within 10 days.

Hi Derek. Well I am a little amazed at JVC. Are you sure this is a USB connected camera and not a 1394 firewire? Did it come with any cables and/or a manual? Information on this camera seems almost non existent.

I provided a link below, never read the whole thing but amid his rant he seems to have found something of a solution.

The only sites I could find were for sellers, precious little in the way of help or details of any kind. Most unusual and sad because I have always known JVC to make good quality products with solid back up.

Ah, we both posted at the same time. Ouch! This is not good news that your parents computer fails to recognise the camera. I agree with you on the JVC site, it seems to be of little use to anyone, nice colours and all that but serious substance seems sadly lacking.

The W98 machine may have simply recognised 'something' attached rather than see it as a video camera so I think that should really be discarded as a positive sign I am afraid.

Bit late at night now, if I remember I will dig again tomorrow. If you read this before retiring for the night let me know if you have a manual and if it connects via a 1394 firewire please.

Derek I decided to stay up late, haha. All I could find was the forum linked below. Not sure if there is help there for you but spend a little time going over some threads, you might get a lucky break. Sorry but that is as good as I can do for you. It would be great if another user came along but...........
