how to make my new antivirus recognize the windows firewall

Hello, I recently installed Norton Anti virus and turned on the Windows firewall. The norton anti virus says "at risk now" F-secure firewall turned off. How do I make it recognize that the windows firewall is on?

Man, my computer is starting to act all screwy. I have an HP pavilion a1130N that I purchased not much more than a year ago.

I used to always keep spybot and ad aware installed and ran routine checks in addition to my antivirus. I no longer do that because one of the technicians I talked to said that it would interfere with the antivirus program.

I had been using the F-secure full protections system for two or three years and was very pleased with it, but when i went to purchase once the old subscription ran out, it wouldn't even install! Now I have Norton antivirus, and I'm afraid my computer is on the verge of crashing.

Couldn't you go to the control panel Add or Remove Programs and remove F-Secure.
I'm thinking if F-Secure is removed then Norton wouldn't even know it's there.

I don't see how spybot and ad aware would interfere with anti-virus.
Anti-Virus programs and Spyware/Adware programs are looking for different things and the programs shouldn't conflict.

I have the exact same computer and I run several spyware scanners along with Avast anti-virus. No problems at all. One program I highly recommend that combines anti-spyware, temp file cleaner, registry cleaner, and a couple of other things is Advanced Windows Care. I keep it updated and run it about once every 10 days or so. It is not an anti-virus program. Give it a try and see how you like it. The link is for the free personal version.

If you have a multi-user subscription, you should be able to load it onto other computers at any time during the period of the subscription, and the clock starts ticking when you load the first one on. I have a 3-user subscription to Norton anti-virus and I loaded one right away, and another 6 months later. However, I have the disc. Since you downloaded yours, did you save the program on the first computer? If so, you could make a copy on a flash drive, and plug that into your netbook and install it. If you don't have that option, you should go go the Symantec web site. When you put the program on the first computer, there is typically a registration step that establishes an account at Symantec. Each time the program is installed and registered, the registration process takes you to the web site and the number of program installs is kept track of in your account. If you log into this account right now, it should show that you have two installs left of what you bought. If you don't have the program, and/or you can't remember how to get into your account (or can't retrieve the info), call Symantec tech support and explain the problem and they should be able to walk you through this. It would probably be helpful if you had your online receipt of the purchase handy when you do this.

"Unless I totally misunderstood my readings, AVs and malware detection applications are niche services. " I think this depends on the particular software, the intended message and context of the conversation. Just as an example (not intended as proselytizing), I use what I think of as Norton Anti Virus. But it's really the Norton Internet Security system. It's a suite of many, many programs and routines that handle a large number of functions. Website reputation, antivirus-malware-spyware-phishing blocking and removal, firewall, temp file cleanup, safety of files downloaded from websites or emails, email scanning, and on and on. Other than the occasional message that pops up, it's invisible. AND, it schedules scans on the fly for only when the PC is not in use. It never interrupts or delays other activity. I never touch it, never schedule anything, and almost never see anything. I think all the best in class products (there are maybe 4 or 5 best choices) are similar to what I described, comprehensive "systems". They're well worth the modest annual cost.

currently with so many people experiencing problems with the new AVG8 I am not recommending it, instead the main one I recommend is Avast and AVira. however if choosing AVG8 I would highly advise using the altered method of install AVG offers in their FAQ page which allows you to install with out the extras which are causing the problems. I use Online Armor. I found it at the site linked below. (Scroll down. It's the third one listed.) What most caught my eye was the fact that it scored very well on the leak test(s). Kerio (my former FW) didn't, althought I've never had a real problem with the latter. OA can be a bit of a nag, esp. during installation of new software. But it's easily trained (by clicking "trust this program" and "remember my decision"). When OA pops up during an install you click "trust the program" and "install mode" and you won't be nagged through the rest of the installation. (Scroll down at the page linked below to find " Best 'Firewall Only' Configurations for Basic Protection and Less User Involvement" with an option for modifying OA to be less of a nag.) Originally I had Kerio and Avast. Then I switched to OA firewall and has issues between that and Avast. Others had similar problems. Since I didn't want to abandon OA, I ended up switching to Avira AV, which I like. But the vast majority apparently have not had any incompatibility issues between Avast and OA, so it may not be in your case if you decide to try it. Forgot to mention in previous post, that I disabled the Windows firewall (many here have explained why it's not so good) and installed free Zone Alarm. Another good free one is Comodo. Either one is better than the Windows firewall.

Yes, I uninstalled and removed all traces, that I could find of f secure before I installed Norton anti virus.

I don't understand why it is saying that, but I remember someone instructing me how to select it before. I keep notes of this stuff, but unfortunately I did not record that one.

I will try one of the firewalls you mentioned.

Whenever I right click things it doesn't even execute the commands consistently. The favorites drop down menu won't come down 75% of the time.

Where do you recommend getting the free Zone Alarm from?

The link below offers free Zone Alarm Suite with anti virus, but you have to select and offer.

I definetly want a new firewall, and I don't particulary care for the Norton antivirus.

My computer already seems to be working better!!!
