how to make my new antivirus recognize the windows firewall

Hello, I recently installed Norton Anti virus and turned on the Windows firewall. The norton anti virus says "at risk now" F-secure firewall turned off. How do I make it recognize that the windows firewall is on?

Man, my computer is starting to act all screwy. I have an HP pavilion a1130N that I purchased not much more than a year ago.

I used to always keep spybot and ad aware installed and ran routine checks in addition to my antivirus. I no longer do that because one of the technicians I talked to said that it would interfere with the antivirus program.

I had been using the F-secure full protections system for two or three years and was very pleased with it, but when i went to purchase once the old subscription ran out, it wouldn't even install! Now I have Norton antivirus, and I'm afraid my computer is on the verge of crashing.

Couldn't you go to the control panel Add or Remove Programs and remove F-Secure.
I'm thinking if F-Secure is removed then Norton wouldn't even know it's there.

I don't see how spybot and ad aware would interfere with anti-virus.
Anti-Virus programs and Spyware/Adware programs are looking for different things and the programs shouldn't conflict.

I have the exact same computer and I run several spyware scanners along with Avast anti-virus. No problems at all. One program I highly recommend that combines anti-spyware, temp file cleaner, registry cleaner, and a couple of other things is Advanced Windows Care. I keep it updated and run it about once every 10 days or so. It is not an anti-virus program. Give it a try and see how you like it. The link is for the free personal version.

it does take a little getting used to and letting the program learn, it will pop up and ask you do you want to let such and such connect to the internet you will likely know what is asking because you are trying to use something that needs access so in those cases say yes, if it is something that needs to access it regularly like your antivirus check mark where it says remember this so it does not ask each time. Do not give server rights some things will ask but it is not necessary once you say no to server rights it will next pop up asking for access, that you can allow. If it is something you do not recognize asking then say no and see if you can determine what it is, if you had some type of malware that is trying to phone home you would not want to allow that access. I prefer mine to pop up and ask each time with some of the rarely used stuff I like to know what is connecting. When getting zonealarm or any other free firewall or any program actually be very alert during the install period and uncheck or do not allow the addition of any toolbars or extras, Zone alarm unfortunately now does try to include a toolbar with the free version, you do not want that toolbar. and if you have problems or questions just ask. When something like generic win 32 something ask for permission say yes or you will not be able to connect to the internet, that is one to check mark always allow. Yes as grandms said with cable you have a direct connection and with no router in between you and the internet that even more dictates the use of a software firewall. The benefit of a router with built in hardware firewall is great but I use both on my windows machines, actually my linux has guarddog firewall built into it so I even have one on linux. I always recommend for anyone getting a new pc or laptop etc so that you know exactly what is in the unit and have the info handy for when you will need it and can not access it for some reason, to do a quick scan with belarc and SIW and print out those specs date it and keep it with your pc info. Doing that has come in very handy in times when a part is needed or info is needed to help and the unit is not able to access that info. You have it all printed out. Belarc Advisor SIW and yes her laptop is windows 7 64 bit when using the new 64bit windows be sure anytime you are looking for programs to download and use on those units that you look to see if 1. it is compatible with 64 bit and 2. is there a separate special download for the 64 bit version. I have Malwarebytes on every computer I own and will never be without it (call me Over Cautious). Elmer is right, I shouldn't need Malwarebytes, but I do have it on my computers and do run it about once a week. Malwarebytes has never let me down! I can't say the same for Norton's, had trouble with Norton's not catching a Virus many, many years ago. Norton's has been doing a great job for me the last 10 years or so though! As I stated above, I do run Malwarebytes about once a week (Manually) and it picks up a few Norton's doesn't consider harmful. I trust Malwarebytes! I do use the Free Version. When Downloading the Definitions just be careful not to press Upgrade, always press Update, that is unless you want to purchase Malwarebytes. Again Elmer is right, I believe Cox does offer the Security Suite, w/McAfee, he post about above! If you have any questions in this matter I'd contact Cox to verify it's included with you package and where it can be downloaded from safely! We have Comcast & Frontier in our area. Comcast offers Norton's Security Suite for up to 5 Devices (use to be 7 devices) even on the Low End Internet Service at $19.99 a month. Frontier offers F-Secure for their Internet Service (not sure on details for Frontier). Most ISP's don't want their customers getting Viruses and Malware making their internet experience unbearable. They also know how important it is that everyone is running a Reputable Up-to-Date Anti-Virus Program on their Desktop Computer, Laptop, Tablet and Cellular Devices. This is why they are including these as part of your package!

Forgot to mention in previous post, that I disabled the Windows firewall (many here have explained why it's not so good) and installed free Zone Alarm. Another good free one is Comodo. Either one is better than the Windows firewall.

Yes, I uninstalled and removed all traces, that I could find of f secure before I installed Norton anti virus.

I don't understand why it is saying that, but I remember someone instructing me how to select it before. I keep notes of this stuff, but unfortunately I did not record that one.

I will try one of the firewalls you mentioned.

Whenever I right click things it doesn't even execute the commands consistently. The favorites drop down menu won't come down 75% of the time.

Where do you recommend getting the free Zone Alarm from?

The link below offers free Zone Alarm Suite with anti virus, but you have to select and offer.

I definetly want a new firewall, and I don't particulary care for the Norton antivirus.

My computer already seems to be working better!!!
