firewall ?????

I just removed AVG antivirus with firewall because my license was up for renewal. TIred of paying for it. After removal I realized that I no longer had a firewall when I installed AVAST. What has everyone else done? I turned on my windows firewall for now. Is this a good move or should I do something else? thanks,

If it's vista you should be ok.

Actually I did this on both my computers and one is vista but the other is xp. What would you recommend for the xp machine? From what I heard xp is a one way firewall and vista is a two way..... what ever that means.

You have Vista which has a 2 way firewall already. However take a squint here for some firewall comparisons. You will find Ghost Firewall listed at #20 in the "Firewalls Fading Away or Gone Completely" list well down the page.

This thread has become like a train wreck to me. I can't stop looking at the replies but I will hopefully soon. I appreciate the time taken to reply, even though some of the comments have been a little bizarre. Thank you, mojomom, and a couple others, for being voices of reason in this *most confusing post ever*. I know nothing about building. I understand if people are alarmed that this is somehow a disaster, but that said, it is what it is. It is an existing and ongoing project. I won't repeat that others have lived here for 10 years or so, but I guess I just did. I have no pictures and will not be driving there to take them. Picture a brick rectangle with a roof and windows and cement floor. No walls at all. There are windows in this rectangle, four on each floor. It has been measured out...surveyed??...surely you know what I mean, please no critical comment on my choice of words there. Each measure space is a unit. That is how it looks and that is what the picture would show. I have already talked to: Codes, Architect, Builder, one neighbor but the neighbor was a long time ago and they are the ones who have lived there for so long. There's is totally finished and beautiful. At this point all I'm hoping to find is another estimate for the firewall. That's it. The reason I keep coming back to this site is because I can't stop trying to explain just how it looks...not how it came to be, why it happened, why it's probably a ponzi scheme, whether or not there are squatters. I think that's where this post went astray when the first response started yelling about SQUATTERS.

The art should be something you love looking at and colors do not need to "match" or "go". You may find that you are drawn to art in your favorite colors anyway, which you've probably used in other places in the room. Even art that might not show up so well against the brick can be matted and framed so it does stand out. Then use accessories (like vases or other things) which complement what you're already using. A black and white painting or blown up photo, matted and framed might look wonderful on your fireplace, too. Just be sure whatever you put up there is large enough to stand up to the heft of your mantel piece. Nothing too small or dainty.

I use Online Armor. I found it at the site linked below. (Scroll down. It's the third one listed.) What most caught my eye was the fact that it scored very well on the leak test(s). Kerio (my former FW) didn't, althought I've never had a real problem with the latter.

OA can be a bit of a nag, esp. during installation of new software. But it's easily trained (by clicking "trust this program" and "remember my decision"). When OA pops up during an install you click "trust the program" and "install mode" and you won't be nagged through the rest of the installation.

(Scroll down at the page linked below to find " Best 'Firewall Only' Configurations for Basic Protection and Less User Involvement" with an option for modifying OA to be less of a nag.)

Originally I had Kerio and Avast. Then I switched to OA firewall and has issues between that and Avast. Others had similar problems. Since I didn't want to abandon OA, I ended up switching to Avira AV, which I like. But the vast majority apparently have not had any incompatibility issues between Avast and OA, so it may not be in your case if you decide to try it.

I personally use an older version of zone alarm pro on my windows xp. The free zone alarm is still a good firewall you just have to watch to not get the added toolbars and fluff they try to slide in there.

I no longer recommend comodo due to some questionable business practices and dealings with non reputable companies. Not a good idea for a supposed security product.

OA is also a good product. Outpost and Ashampoo are other options.
once you have one the best way to determine if it is doing it's job is to head over to GRC and run the tests on your system to see how locked down the firewall has you.
