Hallelujah! Figured out how to show files as list as default!

I *hate* when my files are shown as icons. I find it harder to find things and had to click "VIEW" then "LIST" every time.

In case anyone else has this problem, here is how to fix it:

Open any folder where your files show as icons.

Click VIEW on the toolbar

Click LIST

Click TOOLS on the toolbar

Click FOLDER OPTIONS

Click on the VIEW tab

Click APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS.

YIPPEE!!!!! (Or maybe y'all already knew how to do that...)

Well I have similar ideas. However I do not like the vanilla 'List' but much prefer 'Details' just because of the extra data available, especially after doing the bit listed below.

One other thing you may want to do is before you click to 'Apply to all folders' is to scroll down the list and remove the tick beside Hide extensions for known file types. For me it is very important to see if I am deleting an .exe or .txt file. The effects of deleting a wrong file can be catastrophic. I never understood why Microsoft would even put that in the list as a default item.

Good point. I don't think deleting .dll files is a good move, either :)

So what's up with .png files? They are mentioned on my other thread, and danged if I don't have thousands of them! I looked at some -- lots of pictures of game controllers (?!) and other weird stuff. How'd they get there and why? This is a brand new pc, so I haven't downloaded anything except programs like ZA, AVG, and Mailwasher.

Oh yes, I absolutely love my Gagg steam oven! After enjoying it for almost two years, I know I'd replace it in a heartbeat if I had to, despite the outrageous price. I've learned to steam many of the things I used to boil---potatoes or shrimps, for example. It's much faster than waiting for a pot of water to boil, and if you're in a severe drought situation, as we were last summer, it saves water. For steaming small quantities, I use an inexpensive Chinese bamboo steamer, placing it on the wire rack; a 10"-diameter one works fine, and you can stack two if necessary. Usually, they come in three-piece sets (two round baskets plus a cover), but since you don't need the cover in the steam oven, try to find a place that sells them singly (sorry, I can't remember where I got mine). But stick with the steam oven, and don't be afraid to experiment a bit after you feel more comfortable with the knobs and buttons. Bob, as of today, I am intimately involved with every worthless feature of my printer. lol I tried that, I click on it, change it to 400% and it reverts right back to 100. So I turned on the poster option and picked the one that looks like it's 4 times bigger than a regular page and nothing happens, it just freezes up and doesn't print at all. Grrrrr! I'm thinking that should really do it, but what do I know? I give up. I'll stop by a Kinko's or something and use one of their copiers and save myself the aggravation of this thing. Chances are I'll never even use it, but dangitall, I wanted to figure it out! Thanks for trying to help me, though, I do appreciate it!

Thanks mikie! I went to the search page and didn't take long to get a headache. I think this is going to be way out of my realm. First I changed a Word document into a pdf file and now I gotta embed it back into a html page. When I add the file to an html page, all I get is the page with my background scheme showing. Somehow, this was not what I had in mind. I know it's possible because I see it every day, but I'm just not smart enough to figure it out.Thanks again! Ida

Hallelujah, hallelujah!! It recorded today! TGINMA. (Thank Goodness It's Not Mine Anymore!) I don't know if I'm happy yet; I'm too exhausted to tell. Some of you know how frustrating last few weeks have been as I posted about all the delays over in the buying and selling forum. Things got so twisted and sideways, I wasn't sure if it ever would close. I am definitely NOT happy with the realtor; he kept promising to explain all the delays, but never did. As expected, we bled money on the deal. Not enough to require a transfusion, but enough to make me want to cry. When I recover (soon, I hope), I'll be focused once again on this house, the "one that Topsy built", the too-big house I want so badly to get out of. I'm going to make a huge effort to draw up a plan room by room - and hope we can stick to it. There are soooooo many things that need attention, paralysis by analysis sets in quickly if I'm not careful. I want to start with the kitchen and right now, I can't even see a beginning, much less an end. I think I will move upstairs and use that kitchen so I can take everything out of this one and strip it down to walls. We did things in the reno house that I'd like to do here - and we made mistakes I'd like *not* to do. A huge thank you to all of you who advised, encouraged and offered support as I struggled to hold on to a vestige of sanity. I actually got a t-shirt sometime during this misadventure that reads, "Some days it's not even worth chewing through the restraints"!

The pictures of game controllers are microsofts way of controlling what you buy and what will work with Direct X.

If you want to play a game (don't say you will never want to game...you will never know, there is many that have made that mistake) those pictures of game controllers are Microsofts game configuration maps. Microsoft will only support those controllers approved, and they have fits when you download the game controller's own drivers wherher approved or not. This is all part of Direct X and Microsoft cornering the gaming market with the XBOX and PC...which is a multi-billion dollar market. Big...big money in gaming. Best to just leave them there.

Weed, I read the other thread on the png files but offered no comments. These files are on those computers by default of loading the various programs. I see no advantage in knowing how many files of a specific suffix I have on my computer as long as they arrive via an install or known download.

I too hate the icons, and prefer detail list. took me a while to figure it out, but still every now and then, those dumb icons still come up

Surfergal, just repeat what weed says again, that should cure your problem. however it is possible you had altered those pages during a search. I have most of my pages saved with the 'Details' setting but prefer my photo lists to show as Thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
