I've been running a thread on the Building a Home forum that substantially repeats this thread and refers to our FAQ. The issue of private versus public albums on Photobucket came up (I thought the whole album had to be public to allow you to link to it without a password). aa62579 says that you can link to a specific photo in a private album and that link will be visible. You just can't link to the whole private album and see it without a password. I've never used Photobucket so I'm asking the question of those of you who are familiar with sites such as Photobucket, Picasa, PictureTrail, etc.. Is this a general characteristic of all web-hosting sites? I'd like to add this information to the FAQ. Thanks, Claire

Please note this post only pertains to machines with Windows XP installed. Access is prevented to the websites listed in your HOSTS file, so if you're irritated by a particular pop-up, for example, you could simply add the website itÂs coming from to your HOSTS file. The first step in editing your HOSTS file is to find it. My Computer > C: (or whatever drive Windows is on) > WINDOWS > system32 > drivers > etc > hosts Note: If you aren't sure where My Computer is or you just want to use a keyboard shortcut to open it, you can hold down the Windows key (which looks like this) on your keyboard while you press the "E" key. Right-click on the HOSTS file, and click Open. A window will appear asking what to open it with; find Notepad, select it, and click OK. If you've never edited your HOSTS file before, this is what it should look like: # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost You'll notice all entries begin with "127.0.0.1"; all entries MUST begin with this. If a website is preceded by "127.0.0.1", this means the website cannot load and is blocked. The first entry in the HOSTS file is "127.0.0.1 localhost". Your HOSTS file MUST begin with that entry. To add websites to your HOSTS file (to block them), use this as a guideline: Code: 127.0.0.1 www.blockthiswebsite.comAfter you've edited your HOSTS file, save the changes made (File > Save). Adobe is a corporation, not a product or a file format. PDF, which you states in the subject correctly, means "Portable Document Format" - it is the file format created by Adobe's Acrobat software (and many other programs since Adobe publishes the PDF specification). That file format is actually a meta format of sorts and can contain all sorts of information in it, including illustration file formats, text as well as bitmap graphics in various image formats. You can upload any file to a web host or file hosting service. Not all file types will display in someone's browser and certainly not all files will display inline on one of these forum messages. If you want to just include a text link to the file you can insert a standard HTML anchor tag pointing to the hosted file or you can use the "Optional Link URL" feature included at the bottom of the posting/edit box. If you would like an image to appear inside your post then you should send up a file in a format that will display properly in the majority of people's web browsers and can be used with the HTML "img" tag. Definitely not a TIFF. A JPEG or PNG is recommended. Depending on what software you're using to view or edit PDF files on your computer you may be able to Save or Export the images you want out of the file. Otherwise one very easy way is to do a screen or window capture while viewing the file. The resulting image can then be cropped if needed (to remove any desktop/window graphics that don't belong in the original photo). If this is all Greek to you, you might be better off just uploading the PDF as first mentioned and including its URL in the "Optional Link URL" below. As long as someone has a PDF plugin or viewer they'll be able to view it. Then maybe someone will be nice enough to strip out the pictures you want out of the file. If I see this thread again and you've uploaded the file I can do it if you'd like. Bruno

To help keep this at the top for others and to ask a question. If I understood what I read here one can either compress the photo before posting to Photobucket or one can resize once the photo resides in PB. Am I understanding correctly that if I compress the photo I don't need to resize? And depending on the answer is one way better than the other? Thanks for the directions and the help.
