Will probably be us taking the door down and having it open outward.

Personally, I hate bathroom doors which open out. If you ever had one opening outward, you'd recognize the shortcomings. Do you think this will save space? And is it a problem because you must close the door to get access to the linen closet?

What I'd do is take off the linen closet door instead and install roll out drawers as high up as you can reach, then open shelves above that. IKEA sells the hardware, and so does LeeValleyTools.com

Another change would be to trade in your two piece toilet for something similar to a one piece compact model, saves about 2 or 3 inches floor space depth/width and still has a high seat. It is American Standard Cadet 3 Compact toilet, with 1.24 gallon per flush. Reasonably priced too, compared to Toto. We have ONE of these, and will be buying 3 of them to replace the old toilets in our other house. Never fails to flush on the first go.

Can you draw your floor plan so we can see the spatial use now and what you plan to do? It would help a lot, since one photo cannot get everything in. Thanks.

Yeah, the door would open outward to save more space. It would open into a hallway where there is rarely any foot traffic, so I'm hoping it wont be a problem. Eventually we might do pocket doors or something like that. The closet will be completely taken out, and the sink will be put where it is, I believe. I do need to draw it out, though. I'll see if I can measure it all and find a program to use this weekend.

Good idea for the toilet. It's definitely an old one that takes up a lot of space.

Yes, it is our only bathroom, so when we do any remodeling that will incapacitate the bathroom, it will need to be done quickly each time. Maybe I should get one of those camp potties for when we are working on it? :)

Okay, before the remodel, we're doing a couple of things. One, curved curtain rod. Takes up some space above us, like visually, but otherwise, basically increases elbow room in the shower. I also took down some curtains that were on the window by the shower. They were made of the same thing shower curtain liner is made of, I reckon, and were cold when I touched em. Thus we took them down.

Now puzzled if we can go ahead and put recessed shelves where the window is, because there is a good 5" from our window and the outside storm/noise window. Insulation and keep it like it is, or...? I will post pics if I need.

Also thinking about higher counter/vanity/sink in the corner where the closet is. Sink was alwasy probly gonna go there, but now thinking about an actual vanity and height, rather than just sticking a pedestal sink in the corner with shelves around.

We're also putting a tiny shelf between the shower and the medicine cabinet for the toothbrush charger, etc. That might change later, but for now, it's a start. :)

Trilliant I will be watching your progress with interest! I have a tiny bathroom too, it's the only bathroom in the house like you so doing a remodel is going to be tricky. I would definitely do a vanity instead of a pedestal. You really need the extra storage space especially since you'll be losing the closet. My bathroom currently has a tiny vanity but that storage is invaluable for spare soap, toothpaste, cotton balls, a small waste bin etc.

Trilliant, do you OPEN the bathroom window for ventilation?
Do you have other access to cleaning or removing the outside storm window if need be?

Think about installing a Lexan panel as a second transparent surface to replace the glass window, then put glass shelves in the window as a recessed area for shower supplies?

Is there other natural light entering the bathroom anywhere?
Could you install a row of glass block across the top of the window for light, and then make your tiled recessed nook in the old window for your shower supplies?

Have you thought about one of the light tunnels as a source of light in the bath? Don't know the prices, it just takes a tube of highly reflective material and a collection point on the rooftop to direct light into your space.

Small spaces can be so challenging. You'd be surprised how much a smaller toilet frees up in a small space.

Trance: I was determined to keep our small pedestal sink when it's moved to the corner, and I am probably going to go ahead and do that at first, but I decided yesterday that I would eventually put a vanity there. What I'm going to do in the meantime is keep the medicine cabinet/mirror on the same wall it's on, then add another one where the sink will be, only a bit bigger. I think there will be enough room in there for things that go in the bathroom, besides cleaning supplies, and the towels and clothes should have plenty of room on the shelves above the toilet.

moccasin: No, I never open the window, and husband put one panel of the curtain back up there for now, because the wooden edge around the window was getting soaked, and, though we will probably get rid of that wood eventually, for now we don't want to be causing damage to it (eh, just in case). I love the idea of SHELVES in there, thanks for that idea! There is no other natural light in the bathroom, so I do like that bit. But, yeah, I can clean the windows from the outside, I just have to open them from the inside. They are very good insulation in themselves, I believe, since they were put in by the city due to airport noise. So if I took the inside window out of the equation, I'd have quite a bit of room in there. I promise I'll post a pic this week soon, so you can see what I mean.

Put up the curved shower rod even though my new curtains have not arrived and it makes a HUGE difference. I still want to replace the vinyl stuff hanging from the window, though, because even though we only use one panel now, and it's flat against the wall, I can still elbow it and it's cold. I need to find out what the name of that material that a lot of hotels have in their showers and maybe cut that down to make curtains that fit the windows. Unless anyone has any other idea for a material that won't be cold to the touch and also won't let water through? :)

The best news, though, is that a lot of this stuff doesn't have some ephemeral "eventually" to it. Husband gave me a budget today, and a GC is coming in 2-3 weeks (after he finishes some stuff for us on a rental) to give me some estimates. The budget won't allow for a full remodel, but it will give me a lot of working room, I think. Still have to be careful, though. :)

Costs so far:
-~$25 for the curtain rod
-~$25 for the tp/magazine rack
-$6.97 new shower curtains from k-mart
-~$80 for shelves above the toilet (a little high, but I was desperate at that time, am a tiny bit more patient now)

I should probably make a blog, huh? :)

Oh, and about the door, I'm going to see how much it will be to go ahead and do the pocket door thing. Hopefully that's an option, because that's what really makes you have to "dance" to get in and out, which I hate.
