Vacuum Cleaner for Hardwood Floors

Hi,

We remodeled and put in hardwood floors through out the house. No carpet anywhere now! All I have now is hardwood, porcelain, and travertine.

Is there a special vacuum for hardwood floors or can I use my old vacuum cleaner. I used it once in a little area and it seems fine - but maybe after a while of using it it might show scratches that I'm not not noticing now - not sure.

If I do need a "special" vacuum for hardwood floors, please let me know your recommendations and hopefully it will work for porcelain and travertine too!

Best thing is probably a "Swiffer" actually.
But if you must vacuum then I think most any will work without scaring up the floor.

Our vacuum has a hardwood floor attachment that dust as it vacuums.

I use a 1974 Electrolux and their floor brush attachment. I replaced the brush about twenty years ago. The newer brush has notches in the leading brush (kind of looks like a six year old with missing teeth) which lets the dust bunnies get sucked uo easier. With old brush you had to stop and suck them off. You still have to do that with the new brush but just not as often.

The Swiffer works well too for light dust or a quick dusting

I've been using a Kenmore canister for about five years now on our all hard surface (plus two area rugs) house. I remember thinking $200 was crazy to spend on a vacuum. Ha! I think our house would be a great place to test drive vacuums. We have two Newfoundland dogs (so that's about 270 pounds of dog ... most of it fur) and live 500 feet from the beach so there is always sand around. Frankly I'm impressed the Kenmore still even runs. But it's definitely slowing down. I can vacuum the rugs and still "scrape" off hair with the bottom of my shoe. Because I know a lot of people with Newfoundlands, vacuums are a big topic. I know several people with Dyson who have an unnatural love for them for the first year or so, but as they age (the vacuums, not the people) I'm hearing more complaints. I've definitely heard more complaints about the Dyson canisters than the uprights, but plenty of those too. The Rainbows are pretty much held to be the gold standard and most people I know bought them used. For me, I think a Miele is probably going to be my next vacuum.

Are you sure you used varnish, or was it a polyurethane product? Varnish hasn't commonly been used as a floor finish since the 1960's and requires slightly different care than polyurethane. Varnished floors required waxing and buffing, while that's not necessary with polyurethane finishes. There is usually stain, sealer (there are now one-step stain/sealer products), and more than one coat of the finish applied, and the highest gloss is used for the final coat to provide the most durability. Even using high-gloss (which is the hardest and most durable), it "softens" over time, and so will the semi-gloss finish. I would suggest you consult the manufacturer of the finish, or check their web site, to get more accurate information about care. When we had our hardwood floors refinished with polyurethane, the most I had to do was to run a professional-grade cotton dust mop over it (which I did daily, and washed the mop head frequently, because a dirty mop can hide debris/sand and scratch the finish). I never used a vacuum on the floor because they can also scratch the finish. Occasionally I would use a brush attachment on the vacuum to do the edges. When there was something to clean off the floor (usually wet footprints from people who don't wipe their feet on the rug), I was told to use a damp cloth or Windex and a soft cloth to dry it immediately. Once a year I would do the whole floor, on my hands and knees, with Windex and a soft cloth. It always looked great. But I was given a care instruction sheet after the floor was refinished. You should also use caution with dusting products containing petro-chemicals, like Endust or Liquid Gold. They can damage a finish and void the warranty, so check with the finish company for ACCURATE information concerning cleaning. -Grainlady

d_gw - WOW!. I find it totally cool learning about the creative ways that people use to make a living. I think that is awesome. When I got married, many moons ago, we jumped the broom. I would have spent $350 on that broom. MAYBE. Well, probably not. I am cheap..... On the other hand, the brooms in your link are like works of art, and I love art! Which brings me to a art showing that I went to a couple of months ago. Half the exhibit consisted of a display of brooms from various time periods. On another note, I put my vacuum together this morning and I was so excited I decided to sprinkle some rice, bulgar wheat, cornmeal, and cherrios on the floor and see how it would handle. I recorded my results. There must be something seriously wrong for me to be so excited that I would post a video.... I first tried pencil shavings and cheerios with similar results.

Which stick vacuum is good for hardwood floors and old carpets?

I am looking for a stick vacuum cleaner that has a “gliding“ non-power rotating head. In my house I have hardwood floors, and area rugs that are somewhat delicate/old. I currently have a ball Dyson, and on that model I can switch the power off to the brush motor; the base can then glide well on carpets and bare floor. I would like to get a cordless stick vacuum, but it appears that on the Dyson sticks, there is no “glider“ attachment and the motor brush cannot be turned off. Would you have any advice on cordless stick vacuums that can be used without a power brush and glide well without scratching wooden floors? Luca

Swiffer-Vac--it vacs & dustmops all at the same time. Love mine! Vac catches the Froot Loops that never seem to make in the cereal bowl as well as the dust bunnies & dirt from DH's & DS1's work boots and the swiffer takes care of the dust, fine dirt, and stray hairs. It can be used on hardwoods, tile, vinyl, etc. You can get it for ~$35-40 at Wal-Mart or Target--if you pop open the box, there's a coupon for $7 off inside.

I have a central vac and honestly it's so much easier to pull out the swiffer vac. I have one on each end of the house, because the battery charge doesn't last that long. Just wish they made it in the wide version like the regular swiffer.

LOVE that thing. I use it constantly.

Oh and I turn the cleaning cloths over and use each side before I dispose of them. Both sides work equally well.

We remodeled our current house a couple of years ago and removed 95% of the carpet. We still used our Dyson on the hardwoods, just turned the brush off. Works like a charm. My wife will also bust out the micro fiber "broom".

I can personally recommend the Miele Olympus Canister Vacuum.

I did A LOT of research and finally decided on this vacuum and I'm so happy with it. It's not loud like the others I looked at, it has many suction options, works fantastic on wood floors, tile and large area rugs. Another great thing is that it is light only 13lbs, easy to maneuver and it cleans SO WELL, you will not be disappointed with this vacuum.

Miele is a German company that has been tried and true.

i have a central vac and highly recommend one for hardwood floors. so easy. i have placed a couple of dust pans that fit into kick board so you cant see them. just sweep towards them and hit lever with my foot and vac turns on and sucks up all the dirt, hair, whatever i sweep towards it. don't need pull a vacuum out just a little broom. they have different styles. i have one on one side of kitchen that has a bigger opening for the big stuff and smaller ones in other parts of house.

Highly recommend a Miele canister vacuum. I have been using one for 5 years and it's fantastic on hardwood floors.
