How would you finish the entrance to this shower?

Our master bathroom shower has marble thresholds installed as a door frame. We also have a threshold to step over to get in. Seeing the edge of the stone around the opening doesn't look finished to me and I'm looking for ways to make this look better. Our tile setter suggests we can't put a marble moulding around the edge because the stone he used to frame the area protrudes a little from the drywall. Our builder said he can get the dry wall guys out again to build it up to be flush with the marble "frame." I see many pics on Houzz of marble showers that have either a plain, flat marble door surround or one that is more of a "crown" moulding profile.

Any ideas on how I can make this look more finished? Is it truly not possible to put a marble frame around the outside of this?

I can't tell from your picture if the side of that piece has been finished -- meaning polished a bit. It should match the degree of polish that is on the broader face of the piece, not rough or raw cut. If the side has been polished to match the face of the piece, I'd just leave it. The corner edge could be rounded slightly, but beyond that, putting more around it would just be drawing attention to an area that should fade. Isn't the rest of the shower what you want to show off?

You could put a marble pencil molding all around the doorway. It would protrude beyond the edge of the marble jamb, providing a little bit of interest with the relief and shadow. What is that red stuff?

You have a good start with a schematic and ideas about how you will use the space. I notice the "Entry" so either the basement has outside access or goes into your garage. Not certain where the main steps enter but I suspect into the larger space. Are you DIYing or hiring the work done? The biggest obstacles are the supports (I'm sure you know that). Most likely two nearest the furnace will be enclosed within a wall. Since you mention bookcases, I would try designing those to enclose some of the other posts. Waste no space. Make certain any hidden "nooks" can be used for storage so make them accessible. I suggest to many that they draw the space to scale including walls. Begin with graph paper, pencil and eraser. This will save lots of building time because you'll have a plan. Here are my suggestions for planning: Place 2" XPS foamboard against the foundation and build walls against the foam. Finished with drywall you have lost 6" of space all around. Place masking tape on the floor to get a feel for room sizes. Interior walls will be 4.5" thick. Place X's of tape on the floor where you wish canister lights. Consider placement of electrical outlets and switches. Have plenty of circuits/outlets for table/floor lights, heater(s), appliances and convenience. I agree with supplemental heat. We installed an electric fireplace under the house ductwork. Ours emits up to 10,000 BTU's and requires 220 volts. It's used spring/fall when the furnace is not necessary for the main house. The illusion of a fire can be turned on anytime. Install a back-up system in event of sump pump failure. Consider replacing inexpensive builder quality windows, or fitting storms - this will goes miles toward making the space comfortable in cold weather. We would be lost without the clean-up sink we installed. Keeps the paint brushes away from the kitchen and is used for many tasks. 5 x 7 is larger than necessary for a Powder Room. Even 3 x 5 can be made to work but that is tiny. Place a double wall around the furnace to contain the noise. Build it with 2 x 6 plates, then offset 2 x 4 studs so sound does not travel through the wall. Firecode drywall inside too. I also suggest installing a pan under the water heater so that when it leaks (and it will someday) your finished space does not get wet. Make sure access for servicing the furnace and water heater is there. I'm linking an album of our basement which includes the plan. It's been posted several times so you may have seen it. Use the paste wax meant for hardwood floors or cars - spread it very thinly and then send the kids down sitting on towels to buff it out. You could get a custom sheet metal lining, with the seams and edges bent in the brake for safety, but that would cost a bundle.

I think the wall color should stay the same as the rest of the house and the blue accents are quite charming. Is there something specific you don't like? I am not sure if the art piece and the white piece (shelf cabinet?) have something to do with the culture of where you are and need to stay but if they don't I would start by taking them down. Then I would give the whole area a good power wash to clean it up. I would add a fun out door rug. With a seating area. Then bring in potted plants . Not sure what grows in your area but Figs, ferns, palms all come to mind. Some bright ceramic pots for the plants as well as some bright ceramic lanterns or candle holders Bright outdoor pillows. With your hanging lantern you have it really has a Morrocan feel and with the bright door and shutters I would move forward with that. Lovely space!

The old floor is in bad shape in other areas, it is 1.5" wide 60Y old hardwood installed on diagonal boards that have space between them. It is currently squeaking like hell. It has to go it was refinished partially (they did the hallway and the living and the rooms are still honey bee color) The nails might or might not hit that space so the plywood is there to make sure there is a flat support for the new hardwood floor, and to add sound insulation between floors

That is Red Guard. I think it's a waterproofing paint. We have it in all our showers. Is it not the right material?

I believe the edge of the threshold pieces are all honed evenly. To me, as it is, it doesn't look "finished." The pencil liner is a great option. Thanks.

RedGard is fine. It's just a very sloppy job.

Yes, it is sloppy. Might paint cover it if we don't end up adding stone?

It looks thick and gloppy. You'll have to somehow smooth that out. Although it's too late now, I would have preferred to see the waterproofing wrap around the corner. That area just outside the curb is very prone to water damage.

Can you post one of the Houzz pictures so we can see what type of look you are wanting?

Even if you have the drywall guys pad out the wall, how would you handle the baseboard? And the marble frame would stick out further than the marble on the curb. If you use a pencil liner, don't forget that you will see the thin set where the pencil liner meets the around the frame.

I never believed this when I was in the midst of my reno - but little things like this bother you SO much now, while later when it's all done, they don't. I would leave it as is.

The first picture has a wood frame that goes all the way to the floor. The marble curb is inside this frame. The second picture looks like yours except in yours the marble on the sides stops at the curb and in the picture the curb is inside the side marble. It would be a lot of work to tear yours out and get it to look like either of the pictures.

You could use marble casing, Just have them rabbett the edge of the marble casing as needed so the rabbett will envelope the marble that is protruding past the face of the drywall.

The difficult part will be integrating the added casing with your marble curb and baseboard.

Th easiest would be to use a narrow strip of marble casing (I'm guessing around 1-1/4" wide from the photo?) that will simply sit on top of the marble curb and not interfere with the baseboard, but that might be a bit delicate. It'd be right along the same idea that was previously given of adding a pencil liner.

The slightly more difficult, but more appropriate, would be to put in a wider casing in the 4" to 6" wide range and cut back the baseboard to accommodate the wider casing.
