What do you do when you're ready to thin your collection?
Comments (3)I do give away the common whites/yellows or the varieties that have been given to me, but I have other varieties (Gulf Stream, Hilo Beauty, Moragne #23, Vera Cruz Rose, Cancun Pink, Pu'u Kahea, Brea (not well known, from Jack Morgan), Kamiyama Rainbow, Plastic Pink, Nebel's Rainbow and on and on and on....) that I paid for as cuttings from mostly reputable and a few shady places. I run up quite the bill every spring with new plants and all the fertilizers that the plants need...DH hasn't said anything yet, but if our roles were reversed I would put the kibosh to the plumeria habit if I saw the bills coming in and stuff going out for free! Fortunately I sold a few bigger trees and that gave me the go ahead to bring in some more cuttings. :-) chuy, email me and let me know what you're looking for, I'm in North OC....See MoreLadies, do you enter your house with subs you don't know?
Comments (38)saskatchewan, I got a better one. I had a drywall crew once who also owned a drywall delivery service. These guys were all from the same family, all ex-marines, and all were ex-professional 'wrestlers'. They were huge. I'm not small, but I'd get a crick in my neck looking up at them. 'Baby', the smallest, was 6' 5" tall and weighed in at 300 pounds; all muscle, no fat. Heck, even their grandfather, who made Jack Palance look like a floozy, worked on the jobs. When they drywalled a house, the crew would come out the night before to verify all the measurements, discuss any issues, problems, difficult areas, plan out their attack; and then....the next day they'd drywall and finish the house. All within 48 hours from bringing in the drywall to perfection. In 2001, I was building a house in what was an old cornfield. It was the old hunting grounds of this one guy, who every night, tooted by and screamed obscenities at us while we were doing F and F (foundation and framing), because it was his old (illegal), hunting grounds, and we ruined it. He drove this old, nasty pickup that had a beer can muffler and relied on grace, rather than mechanics, to make it run. He'd slow down, scream a drunken slur or two, then carefully rev it up and take off down the road. Well, I was standing out there with my drywall crew of huge ex-marines and WWF wrestlers, discussing the merits of Grabber vs. McFeely's drywall screws, when he went by one evening, and leaned out the window and yelled "You #######! If I had a liddle mur time, I'd kick evury one of yur azzes!" He must have had that extra, additional shot of encouragement at the Hilltop Tavern, because he also gave us a big long....er...."number 1 salute" with his middle finger. Then he gave that ol' truck just a little 'too' much gas, and stalled it. Right there on the road in front of little ol' me and five men who might have been extras in the movie '300'. I don't believe I've ever seen a more panicked look on a person's face at that moment, when the five drywall guys started to move towards his truck, one of them saying "what did you say......?"...See MoreHow can you deal with a GC you don't trust?
Comments (12)In the OP's defense, just because one got taken, does not mean one didn't do their due diligence. People don't always realize how non-public certain records really are until they have their own problems. For example, some BBB's keep complaints under wraps, only changing a "rating" to unsatisfactory after some undetermined number of complaints is filed in a 3 yr. period. When complaints scroll off that 3 yr mark the rating can return to satisfactory, even if severe problems exist. Same for state agencies--they often give the illusion to consumers that you can call and find out about any/all complaints when in fact that's not necessarily true. There was a builder in PA not long ago who had been literally shielded by the home builders association from his criminal record. The BBB there didn't consider or report that either. Court records are only useful if, A) the court site has a good search engine which they don't always, and B) the builder didn't keep complaints out of court with arbitration clauses that prevent suing. Not all court records are online, meaning a person would have to travel to jurisdictions the builder built in and personally search records. I have used both online and in person searches and found the following problems may prevent people from finding out about lawsuits: Court desk clerk retrieves the records and doesnt' find them all. Again, online search engines for court sites can be poor. Not everyone's online or is good at internet research. Many older people do not even use a computer. Do they "deserve" to get taken? Like Susiesnowflake here, I did diligent research and it was not my first new house either. I still got taken. Even after all the complaints I filed our state didn't report any of them to consumers who called to inquire. Only when the builder stopped paying his BBB dues did the BBB reflect complaints, which have now scrolled off their radar anyway. I also know of a builder in my state who built houses for seniors on 4 feet of uncompacted fill dirt with the predictable foundation failure as a result. NO public record anywhere of this disaster, and the builder is "highly regarded" all over the state. Most of the owners don't have the energy or resources to fight it. Due dilegence is only as good as the availability of the records you seek. It would do home buyers much more good to learn proper and improper construction when they see it, then they can adequately assess the builder's work in all stages of progress on OTHER houses, before signing a contract in the first place. Research alone is not enough. And getting taken does not mean a buyer didn't research their builder....See MoreDo you dream more when you don't get enough sleep?
Comments (2)Hi quirky, I think you dream only during REM sleep. I'm thinking that you get so exhausted by the Tuesday night, that you sleep very deeply........and you go into REM sleep more, and that can cause all the dreaming. Also, my family and I have noticed that when we eat tomato products, we tend to dream alot more and have crazy dreams....See Morelorriew
