Comments (8)Sure, you people may all have crown in your bathroms, but do you chair rail like I have in my powder room? LOL I gotta say, it's a very dinky powder room on the first floor which makes the chair rail look that much more comical. Comments (19)olychick, thank you for taking a look. :) I'm relieved to hear you think a white shower pan is best. I am heading out now to find porcelain marble look tiles for the shower walls to pick up the gray as you suggested. I want a shiny finish to the walls. Tell me if you think that's a misstep. I am avoiding marble as I have a marble topped vanity now that is pock marked with etchings. As far as seeing myself in the vanity, yes, I think I will be able to do so. I was planning on a black framed mirror spanning the vanity. My current vanity is 32 1/4" high (as will be the new vanity) and when seated on my vanity stool my reflection is seen up to my chest. The only issue currently is that my knees are pressed against drawers. I failed to mention that I was thinking of using absolute black granite for the vanity top for two reasons: one being cost and the other being to avoid etching. Will doing so deviate too much from my inspiration? Comments (2)I don't have an opinion about whether you should add crown, but I can tell you that I have crown molding in my bath with no problems. However, my shower is designed a bit differently than yours with the tile going all the way up to a shallow light soffit. Comments (12)I'd be inclined to suspect a combination of fan dampers not closing properly and gross overchilling of the bathrooms. Aside and editorial: I'm not a doctor, but I consider anything below about 75 deg F too much change from outdoors for good health in the summer. The hotter your climate, the more critical this is. Seventy-eight or even 80F is ample cooling when the outdoor temp is in 3 digits. It saves significant money on your summer electric bill, too. Overcooling the indoors also makes you more miserable when you go outside, because it inhibits your body's ability to adjust to the heat. As you've seen, overcooling can also cause house problems. If the bathrooms were in the 60-65 deg F range, that's excessive. I've never heard of a bathroom with more than one heating/cooling register. Is the bath that huge??? Try closing off all the vents but one. Leave the doors open when the bathrooms aren't in use. Remove the fans from their housings and check for proper damper operation. Clean the dampers and ducts thoroughly with a brush and vacuum. Lubricate the dampers (if necessary) only with a dry lubricant, such as Teflon or graphite. It sounds like the fans aren't really working all that well. I think that the 14' run to the cap is too much, especially with bends. You need a shorter path to free air. Consider ducting the exhausts straight up through the roof (example). The roof cap will also provide a redundant damper. Use rigid pipe....See MoreMongoCT
10 years agoI have crown in every room in my house to include the master bath. I probably went a bit overboard on the first floor, as I carried the 9-piece crown in the foyer into the tiny first floor powder room.
But crown in the master is not a problem at all. I have a fairly simple crown in the master, a backer board with a traditional ogee crown over that. I was going to add a picture rail molding towards the bottom of the backer, but we nixed that idea. In the master there's not much that we would have hung from the picture rail, so there was really no need for it.

10 years agoThat's a beautiful ceiling.
A couple I know bought a tract house in the development one over from mine. From the research I've done, the homes in their development were about $5000 more than the ones in my neighborhood (in the late 1950's), which was quite a bit of money back then. The homes have a little more sq. ft, little bigger yard and some nicer details. What caught my eye when I first saw the place was the rather simple (in detail) but larger crown moulding in the combined living room/formal dining room. It looks something like the below picture, although a little wider and they have regular, small, stained oak trim around the doorways. My friends' crown 'trim' was on-site fabricated in plaster when the house was built. Talk about a level of craftsmanship that is very rare these days.
