On to vanity lighting...one more piece of the puzzle! (pic heavy)

**Searching for two single scones in brushed nickel to go on either side of the mirror below** Looking for any suggestions!!

So, I'm sure you all have seen tons of my posts about tile/vanity, but I need help picking lighting that won't break the budget. Here's all the pieces I have so far--attempting to be somewhat loose rendition of a period-bath to fit in our 1870's home (but I don't really like super-fussy Victorian, hence the reason I say "loosely"--plus there was no indoor plumbing when this house was built, so I don't feel too guilty about differing styles/eras in the bathrooms).

Sarah, I love what you've done with your bath!

I remodel old houses and the last one I did had a similar "farmhouse" vanity look. Now you may not like this, but I like to combine the old house look with a few "high tech" touches. I put two of these Kichler sconces on each side of a similar painted mirror. They are exterior fixtures, but that suited me fine for the bathroom. I used white globe light bulbs and it looked terrific.

No, I really do like that style. I'm not sure if that's what I'm going for in this bathroom, but that's the kind of lighting I'm trying to convince my husband to get for our Morton Building that we put up when our original barn burned in 2005.

Don't you think those would look good on the front and porch area of this?

(P.S. This is one I like from Restoration Hardware, but there's three problems--one, it only takes 60W max, and I think it would be better to get one rated up to 100W, and two, is it a little Art Deco? It would be in brushed nickel, but still? And three, it's $120 per sconce...which I think is a little pricey)

And here's one more in my budget range...but don't love it as much (from Lowe's--Portfolio--$45 per sconce)

Natebear and snookums2 thanks to you both for commenting. I like the oval and that was always going to be the mirror, the one with the frame #1. Then I found that frame material and it looks lovely with my paint choices and the marble. The vanity will be painted a semi sheen light med gray. The walls are a light gray. Both will have blue undertones that really pick up the hints of blue in the finish on the frame. The sconces may have to go. I really like them but they are bigger than I thought they would look. I bought them online. The vanity will take up some of the depth to help offset the size of the sconces I think. The location of the sconces are set, but the style may have to change. The #s1 and 2 seem safe to me. #8 I am liking now, but it changes moment by moment! HElp! I will not commit to the mirror until the vanity is in in a week or 2. But I want to get some input with what I am thinking, and you guys always come through with great feedback.

Of course you are overwhelmed-10 choices is too many! Can you do a bit of a gut check: what do you envision in your space? (I like what sparklekitty wrote above.) RE: color... 1) Can you post the tiles you are hoping to match? If they are white/off white, which slabs are closest to your particular white? 2) On my monitor--It looks like there are 2 slabs out of the 10 that have more warmth/taupe/gold tones to them (option 7 & 10--maybe they're even labeled different Calacatta d'oro or Calacatta Gold?) I'm wondering if you can eliminate them if you prefer more crisp gray/black and white of the other 8 slabs? (Those 2 taupe toned slabs are actually my favorite, but are they yours?) I'm thinking 2 of these things are not like the other... RE: how to choose what piece for where Can your fabricator meet you at the stoneyard to help show you how they could layout pieces on the slabs you like? There are only certain ways they'll be able to cut the stone to get you all the pieces you need. (This was very helpful to me.) Right now you are looking at slabs, which have little to do with the final look you'll have from the smaller pieces you will see in your home. I'd prioritize which portion of which slab you like for your island (or your bath, if that is more important to you.) But just think about that one thing first. Then, do you like the pieces that remain for your other counters? I took some blue painters tape to the stoneyard to make my own (very primitive) "templates" on the slab it was easier to stand back and "see" my counters that way. Miscellaneous: Large areas of pure white with no veins will show etches the worst. Veining helps disguise etches. I would try to put the most veining on your kitchen island which would see the heaviest use. When I was shopping for our marble, I could find slabs with the tones I wanted OR the vein pattern/movement, but not both. Is one more important to you?

I seem to recall reading somewhere that 36" of counter space on either side of the range and sink is optimum. However, we have a really tiny kitchen and have 30" to one side of the range (works just fine for us) and about 1/2" on the other (not so good). Having no counter space was our only option and can be a pain in the @ss, but it's not impossible to live with. Do you often have 2 cooks prepping or cooking at the range at the same time? If so, I would recommend at least 2ft on that side. If not, I'd say you could get away with 18". You need room for pot handles to stick out and to set pots or pans out of the oven on. If you have a cab down to the counter, you want to be able to set a hot cookie sheet there without worrying about whether it is touching the side of the cab. On the issue of symmetry, I would say a little bit is okay, but with the kind of kitchen you are going for, you don't want it all completely matching. Someone posted a pic of their new kitchen last week wondering if the lack of symmetry with their hutch-like cab looked off. I think it made the kitchen look much nicer and less factory produced which is what I think you want as well. I wouldn't make your cab any deeper than 18". The reason I say this is that if you picture ourself prepping on that side of the range - you may be standing in front of the open counter, but your arms and elbows will be out to the side in front of the cab. You don't want to be butting into the side of that cab. We didn't allow for elbow room in our bathroom and had to move the vanity over. You will really appreciate the deeper cabs for those big dishes but like I said, I think 18" will be plenty. Really looking forward to seeing your kitchen complete. It's going to be wonderful.

Looks like your bathroom is really shaping up.

Thanks, profrip! I love School House Electric--just trying to see if it fits in the budget--the lighting I have seen that I like at Rejuvenation/School House Electric/Restoration Hardware winds up being three times what the Lowe's/HD counterpart is. Trying to figure out where I want to save and where I want to splurge.

Yikes! When I linked that Kichler light it was on sale for $67. Now it's $134. I wouldn't pay that much. If you're interested, keep an eye on ebay. I really like the first sconce you posted but, again, too expensive. Keep looking. You'll find the right thing. I beg you not to give in to the Lowe's syndrome. Lighting is one place where you can get creative and separate yourself from the hordes, so to speak. Though Lowes and HD have good choices, I hate having lights like everyone else's.

I think this fixture might be too small for your (lovely) Morton Building. Also, I'm not crazy about putting nickel fixtures outside. I think oiled bronze would look better.

Sarah- the RH sconce (one of my favorites, btw) often goes on sale, I have seen it for around $87 I think... not sure what your budget is.

I wanted that one exactly (in BN) but I couldn't fit sconces on the sides of my mirrors so had to go with down lights.

There should be good sales, this is definitely the time of year- esp prez day coming up. I think I bought my fixtures this time last year (no, they are not yet installed... :-()

Oh, and if there is a place to browse lighting, Bellacor.com will keep you busy for many hours!

THANKS for the heads up, Sarah!! I think I'll wait for the sale. Does anyone happen to know how you would find out if that Restoration Hardware Bistro Sconce (the one above) is flush-mount or mounted to a box? I guess the way our studs line up, we don't have room for a box and need the flush-mount kind (loosely translated from what my husband just rattled off a few minutes ago.)

I can't tell from the website.

And I'll take your advice and go hang out on bellacor.com :)

Other good places to browse for lighting online - csnlighting.com and lightingdirect.com. Their collections mostly overlap, but each carries a few brands that the other doesn't. I got my kitchen fixture from lightingdirect, and my bathroom fixture from csnlighting. Good customer service, too.

I've noticed that light fixtures seem to have gone up in price over the past few months - my kitchen fixture was $86 when I ordered it last August or September, and now it's $101. My bathroom fixture was $106, and it's now $136.

Look up Progress lighting on the internet. I saw some there that might look good. I think they have a dealer listing and I've also seen their catalog in Home Depot. I think Depot charges less than list.

Sarah, I really love the RH one. I don't think it's too art deco at all. But I agree that you should go hunting more for more affordable ones. I'm with you on this, I have NO idea where to start looking. So good luck, I love your choices so far!!

I think if I can hold out and the Restoration Hardware one goes on sale, I might get that one...I think my *invisible* goal is something significantly under $100 per sconce...$87 sounds a lot better to me right now than $120!! I'm REALLY trying to be good about costs in this bath (it's hard, though! but my Excel spreadsheet, with all of the little "invisible" expenses like sheetrock, plumbing do-dads, and Tub Trips makes me keep the fun stuff to a reasonable amount)

Not sure if this was mentioned, didn't read the entire thread. Up lighting at 100W IMO won't any better than 60W downlighting. I hate up lighting in a bath
