How much to replace bath/shower combo

Our second bathroom has a bath shower combo. At least I think that's what you call it. It's one of those that has the fiberglass extend up the walls to above the showerhead. We hate it because it's ivory in an otherwise true white bathroom. We would love to replace it with a regular tub and tile the walls instead. I'm looking for ballpark figures on how much the labor for this would cost (I'm in NC). The room is just as wide as the tub. We could do the tiling ourselves, so I'm really just looking for an idea of ripping it out, putting in the new, and making the walls prep ready for tile.

Lucy - I can't give you any idea about the costs, but if you feel up to doing the tiling, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to do the whole job. I did something similar all by myself in one of my first DIY jobs and it's not hard at all. Well, except that cutting a hole through a wall to slide the tub into the bathroom was very intimidating and my husband helped with that. Any basic bathroom remodel book (pick one up at Home Depot or Lowes) will show you the basic steps. And you can use a reciprcating saw to cut through the fiberglass unit. I just did that in my master bath this past Sunday, except that mine was a one piece molded fiberglass shower unit, and it was a hideous blue.

Lucy, I just met with a GC yesterday to see about ripping the bath/shower combo out of my son's bathroom because it has a hole in the side of the tub. He said it would "cost a small fortune" because the unit would have to be hacked into pieces in order to get it out of the door. (Apparently these one-piece units are installed before the walls are even finished because of their size.) He recommended that we try to repair the hole instead.

I told a friend about this today and she said that she wanted to remove her combo tub shower because she hated the color, and was told the same thing -- that it would be cost-prohibitive to try to remove it. So she had it recolored! And is very happy with the result. Maybe you could look into that option.

Oops! My title may have sounded snobbish - lol! What I meant was - in my search for inspirations pictures, I am seeing so many bathrooms with gorgeous tiled showers, marble slabs, huge vanities, storage towers etc. and that is not the direction I am going in (and that are as bigger than my bedrooms) Weedyacres - Isn't it amazing what paint, tile and fixtures can do to perk up a "tired" bathroom. Great job -keeping things simple in a small bath. I did that to my DH's bath a couple of years ago. Painted a drab, worn builders oak vanity a gorgeous white, slapped a new Lowes stock faux granite top on it, painted the walls,etc. Gsciencechick - your sister's project sounds like mine. An "nice hotel" look is the direction I am kind of going in. It's called making the best of my space! I can't believe how expensive glass doors are - talk about sticker shock! I may have to clean up the stainless on the one's I have and re-use them. aa62579 - I'm actually going to have to take out a wall behind the existng unit which is my laundry room. I know -sounds likes overdoing it, but I really want to get it right - this will be my forever bath! If I do a solid piece unit, I will NEVER have to deal with caulk. We have looked at the separate pieces, but we don't think we can get these pieces through the regular door either. My project is not going to be easy! I'm actually going to be putting new flooring and woodwork down in the laundry, so might as well have both rooms torn up at once. Tuesday

Thanks for all your thoughts! homeybird- we did briefly consider the wetroom idea, however, we're in Maine (brrrrrr), this room has 3 exterior walls and a poorly insulated floor, AND we need to be a little more traditional for resale. igloochic- Well, right now there IS no office. That is all part of a gigantically long master bedroom. It's stupid space in my opinion. I work at home and NEED an office, so right now my desk is set up there, open to the bedroom. I HATE it. Hate the computer lights and hum, hate seeing the piles and cords. I want my bedroom to be a calm place to escape and unwind. This house is teeny, so there is NO other place for my office to go. (Plus, we think being able to claim 3BR is a plus for resale. Target market will either be a young family or retired couple. Either way it seems like 2 normal-sized bedrooms and a small nursery or home office is a desireable combo. Honestly, there's no other place in the house where a home office could go....) weedyacres- I'll play around with that but my DH is going to be mad. We're having a heck of a bad year, renovation-wise. We started the kitchen/LR/DR renovation in April and soon discovered some very major drainage problems. We'd hoped to complete the exterior renovations this fall but the money we had to spend on the stupid drainage problems has left us utterly broke. Then DH got temporarily furloughed and I am not working either, and both cars are dying. It's baaaaad. BUT we HAVE to address this bathroom this month because it is -quite literally- making me sick. There is a huge mold problem in there. It's sealed off with painters tape right now because I was so sick from it. DH is going to have to cut a hole in the exterior wall, go in there and start gutting it until he finds the source of the mold (we suspect it is in the insulation, possibly the sheathing and studs, hope not!!). ANYWAY. It is not the best scenario to start a renovation. The kitchen's still not done either. And we're out of money. So we're leery of making too many changes. Even doing it all ourselves, having to reframe and redrywall and trim out all those extra walls is sure to add at least a grand, don't you think? Plus, our Washer & dryer are currently in the north closet...... WEll, I will draw it out and play around with it...... thanks for thinking outseide the box anyway.

No freestanding tub with a shower. That’s a drainage and cleaning nightmare. My retired mother specifically asked for a large tub in the bathroom that they use at my house, which only has room for a tub/shower combo. She has no issues stepping into it. If you’re under 80 and don’t have MS or Parkinson’s, you should get a gym membership if you find something so trivial difficult. My retired mother has also started running for the first time in her life. You can add wall jets and the whole bit to a tub enclosure. I find it strange that some people make a big deal out of this. Tubs also come with handy places to put your foot for shaving. You can put the deepest kind of jetted tub with a shower, too. We have 3 shower jets, a handheld, a rain head, and a big jetted tub with an inline heater in an alcove installation. That aside, plenty of people are shower-only people. About 30% of Americans bathe fewer than 4x per year, I think the statistic I found said. Now, I take a bath 9 out of 10 times. Even if it’s only for 15 minutes, that’s my quiet time. I turn on the jets, meditate, zone out, watch something horrible on Netflix...so your house would be off my list. But you don’t have to appeal to everyone—just to the right people.

Personal preference. *I* don't care for how much of the same tile is in the 1st photo and don't care for how black the 2nd photo is. That's my taste. Both are good design.

I do believe that a contractor would chage a small fortune for the job, but I don't know why exactly. It took an extremely small amount of time to remove the one piece fiberglass shower unit. First we removed the drywall from all around the edges of it. Then removed the few screws that were holding it in place. Then used a reciprocating saw to saw it into four pieces - three cuts. Each cut took a few minutes and each piece was light enough for me to carry down the stairs and out to husband's truck.

Coolbeans offers two reasonable suggestions, but if you still want to do the demo, I highly recommend doing it yourself.

With only a little help from my husband, who wasn't feeling well and was watching football, I gutted, down to the studs, my entire master bath, in about 5 hours. and that was taking my time. Of course taking out tile takes longer but we didn't have any in the bath, and it sounds like you don't either.
