Thinking about doing something like this so that the future owner could remove the tub if wanted. I just don't know what to do!!

As long as there is a tub in the house, I would just do a shower in the master. But that's me -- for resale, it might make a difference. You can ask your real estate agent what people looking in your area do want. As for the tub inside the shower, I'm just not digging it -- you'd have to clean/dry the tub after each shower, I imagine.

Ask a local real estate agent what sells better in your area. If there's already a tub in the home then I would go for just a shower unless people in your market absolutely don't buy homes that don't have baths in the master (doubtful though).

Well, since you mentioned there is a tub in the kids bath then you can forego the tub in the master. But as other posters have mentioned, ask a real estate agent what sells better in your area.....

You are just purchasing this house. I gather you will be living there for quite some time. Don't worry about resale; do what works for you. If you're looking for permission to do a shower-only in the master bath, you've got it. :-)

Just bought a house and had both bathtubs removed and converted into a beautiful step in shower (guest bath) and a curbless shower (master bath). yes, the designer said it would impact resale, but I can't and won't live my life for the someday to come. As they say, life is uncertain, eat dessert first! And a gorgeous shower is my current dessert!

Tub showers are a compromise... not a good shower or a good tub. You will enjoy an awesome shower much more than the compromise. This is a conversation I have a lot. I can't tell you how many clients who've told me I haven't taken a bath in years (and others whose favorite pastime is soaking in the tub). I'm sure there are plenty of buyers out there who would fall in love with your beautiful shower. Do what works for you.

In my area those that want a tub in the master represent a very small segment of the market. A spa type shower is preferred. As mentioned by Summit Studio Architects there are people that do want to soak in a tub, but most say (to me) that they haven't taken a bath in years. I'm a Realtor so getting the criteria right from the beginning is important to find the right home. Put in the shower you want. Personally, I don't see the lack of a tub in the Master Bath affecting resale - but who knows what it will be in the future. Do what works for you in your home.

OP - if you're actually on living in the house, do what suits you and not what you guess some future buyer might like. I personally wouldn't want to live with a mediocre tub/shower combo even if it did add a few dollars of resale value to my house (and I suspect it wouldn't).

No freestanding tub with a shower. That’s a drainage and cleaning nightmare.

My retired mother specifically asked for a large tub in the bathroom that they use at my house, which only has room for a tub/shower combo. She has no issues stepping into it. If you’re under 80 and don’t have MS or Parkinson’s, you should get a gym membership if you find something so trivial difficult. My retired mother has also started running for the first time in her life.

You can add wall jets and the whole bit to a tub enclosure. I find it strange that some people make a big deal out of this. Tubs also come with handy places to put your foot for shaving. You can put the deepest kind of jetted tub with a shower, too. We have 3 shower jets, a handheld, a rain head, and a big jetted tub with an inline heater in an alcove installation.

That aside, plenty of people are shower-only people. About 30% of Americans bathe fewer than 4x per year, I think the statistic I found said.

Now, I take a bath 9 out of 10 times. Even if it’s only for 15 minutes, that’s my quiet time. I turn on the jets, meditate, zone out, watch something horrible on Netflix...so your house would be off my list. But you don’t have to appeal to everyone—just to the right people.

I think you're safer with a walk-in shower but bathtubs are getting more popular lately, so I would maybe consult your local real estate agent and check what sells better. Again, this depends on when are you planning on selling the house. Trends change.

When I'm too old to step into a tub, I will be too old to go up the stairs. And the last thing I will want to do when I'm that old is to clean four bathrooms every week. And by then, I expect the hair on my legs will stop growing, so I won't need a "handy place" to shave my legs. Tub vs shower in the upstairs master bathroom will be a neutral issue for me if I'm purchasing a home in my mid-90's.

"Rule of thumb" for purchasing a home is to plan to live in it for at least five years to "break even" on your move-in expenses. With that in mind, install the walk-in shower and forget about the tub, since you won't use it.

no one thought garden tubs would ever go out of style. framed shower doors were once the bees knees. its hard for us to imagine but curbless showers will also be supplanted by something Even More Remarkable.

if you have no plans to sell, build for today. by the time you sell only tubs and showers in the middle of the kitchen will be the height of fashion, for all we'll know.

Do what you love and looks smashing to you....the future buyers will do the same. After all you are remodeling the house to suit you and future buyers will too.
