I prefer that closets be accessed from the bedroom, rather than the bathroom, because I find that more convenient and I donâÂÂt want moisture getting in the closet. I like walk-in closets to be 7' wide, because that allows 2' down each side for hanging clothes (or shelves, drawers, etc.), with a 3' aisle in between (comfortable for walking, but not a lot of wasted space in the middle). I use the space at the narrow end opposite the door for shelves or a shelf and drawer combo, so you donâÂÂt have hanging clothes running into each other on the corners. This is a quick sketch, not to scale. You would need to adjust the door and window locations. I didnâÂÂt draw in the doors for the toilet room, closet, shower, etc. The closet has a 7' x 12' interior. The shower would be about 8' long, and 4-6' wide, depending on your preference. (You can shrink the length of the shower if you want more closet space.) I show a free-standing tub under the window, but deck-mounted would also work. The vanity could run the whole length of the closet wall or be shorter. You could include storage tower(s) with the vanity. The vanity could also move to the wall opposite the closet wall, depending on what door placement works best from the bedroom side. There are a few open spaces where you could add shelves or closed cabinets for storage or display. If you prefer to enter the closet from the bathroom, I can move some elements around. You could have doors into the closet from both rooms, but would lose some storage space in the closet.

To some degree, it's personal preference, and sometimes, it just depends on how the house ends up. I can see benefits to both. I've never lived in a closet-first house, and I've lived in two bath-first houses. The production home I'm building now also has a bath-first arrangement. I like the idea of not needing to pass through the bathroom when I'm putting away laundry, but I also like the idea of a closer toilet (my husband gets up in the middle of the night). I am in the habit of gathering my clothing *prior* to showering, whereas my husband likes the closet adjacent to the shower so he can go get his clothes afterward. We also like the idea of connecting the closet to the laundry room, and then connecting the laundry to the kids' bathroom (via a door or a pass-through), which requires a [master bed --> master bath --> master closet --> laundry --> kids' hall bath] sequence. I also strongly prefer all bedrooms on the same wing/side of the house. Honestly, I could live happily either way... The houses I grew up in never had a master suite, so I feel lucky to have it. :-)

I agree that the master bath is awkward. It's small and maze-like, and so many doors (and pocket doors in the wrong places). I think you'll end up pulling your elbows in (people who've been in prison do that, you know, even after they're released from prison) as you walk through. And I agree with you: Sometimes the closet-in-bathroom works, but this isn't one of those cases. One reason is that the closet door and the shower are just too close together. Switch the closet and bathroom /simplify the bath layout so it fits better in the available space -- this closet is slightly larger -- the loser here is the sink; to keep the toilet under the window, the sink has to shrink -- but the circulation between the rooms is greatly improved, and you'll have a great sound barrier between the bedroom and bathroom: Switch the closet and bathroom /reduce the closet a bit so you can still have the large vanity and the toilet is neatly tucked back in a corner -- you're gaining a linen closet IN the bathroom (or that could be turned to the closet as a deep storage spot for out-of-season boxes, suitcases, whatever) -- or you could have a truly massive shower --- of course, you've lost some closet space here; the question is, was it useful closet space? You'd still have roughly 7' of storage down each side:

I still like no. 1 better but before you go ahead with this dimension of shower, for precautions, I would shop for vanities just to make sure you can find one that size. Also, for me, an 18x32 vanity would be too small. It may not for you but I suggest that you compare what you have right now and see if you would be satisfied with a vanity that size. The drawers might be very narrow. All of that may work for you but it does not hurt to check before you commit. If you find the vanity too small or you can't find any of that size, you might have to change the angle of the shower. You can also have a custom made vanity, but also check if you can find a sink the right size for that vanity. Also, if you find you have not enough storage you may want the cabinet I suggested in the bottom left corner. In that case, I would put a sliding door in the middle of the bathroom (not to the left. Your plan as you have it now might well work but there are precautions worth to checking before committing.
