Question on a room's design

I am making a room with a boiler, indirect water heater tank, oil tank, breaker panel, pipes, etc.

Thing is, more room is needed around the boiler than the other stuff.

Should I make the room with a straight wall and waste space or bump out around the boiler?

I also think I might need two doors: one in front of the boiler for access (the burner points that way) and another one for elsewhere, in front of the panel.

Ideas?

Are you finishing or planning to finish the remainder of your basement? If yes, develop your plan for the entire space first.

Space is precious, so don't waste any you can put to use. As to your questions, consider recessing a closet or bookcase into the "wasted" space in the boiler room. Make certain that you provide combustion air to the room. You may indeed need both access doors - at least some way to service the equipment.

I'm linking our basement which includes a print of the entire space. The furnace is accessed via a bookcase which pulls forward on casters. As our electrical entrance is elsewhere, a flush door encloses the panel.

That is one nice basement!

My ambitions are a lot lower. I have to cover the foam wall insulation I'm putting up with drywall, so I figure, what the heck, I'll try to make it a little nicer; maybe exercise stuff, workbench. I'm not really sure, so I guess I should think more about it. I'm not going to get fancy with lighting though or add plumbing (maybe some heat via an added hot water loop since there is already an extra takeoff on the manifold).

Space is tighter for me, ~ 33 X 33, with stairs (no-landing) in the middle. Naturally, the boiler stuff is on one wall, the water softener on another and the drain pipes on yet another. So, I'll try to maximize what I have I guess.

I like the bookcase idea. It provides a wide opening for access, yet is useful for storage.

This is a fun thread! I wonder how many of us garden. I'm a bit fanatical. I've never really had an eat-in kitchen, just our soon-to-be-ex-kitchen's peninsula seating. Since the peninsula was our main prep area and since sitting there afforded us excellent views of all the dishes, knives, cutting boards, etc. used in prep, it was not very relaxing to sit at! And now that I think of it, I don't have a lot of seating in the garden(s) either. One 25'x75' plot at our local "community gardens" (I have to drive there) consists of 27 raised beds with paths between them. I do sit on the edges of the raised beds, but more often at one end underneath a tree, since I like to look at the whole plot and the bees, dragonflies, butterflies, flowers, veggies, etc. from that end. At home, the veggie garden is in a fenced-off area to prevent critters from getting in, though there are roses and clemati growing on the pergola gateway to it. So I guess my favorite thing is to sit on the patio and be surrounded by the beds of flowers, herbs, shrubs, and trees when at home. I do like to sit looking at the crammed-full "kitchen garden" though. I can hardly wait until we get to eat out there every night again. Neither of those really counts as "in the garden," but they're more in the garden than overlooking the garden from, say, a deck raised above them or something. The main exception is at home when the mosquitos start coming out. We're looking forward to our new sunroom where we can look out at the gardens without (my husband) being eaten alive! bean

Family photos in dining room: a designer’s faux pas or is it ok?

I love family photos. However, (and this is just me) I get a creepy feeling when they are put in such a prominent spot that for a lot of the time I am in a room, the whole family is staring at me! My beloved SO has LARGE family photos of his whole family on a shelving unit right across from our bed in the bedroom, and it is a small room so the edge of the bed is relatively close to the shelving unit. His whole clan is always staring at me, when I go to bed at night, when I'm changing into my jammies or getting dressed in the morning, and when I wake up. I wouldn't want my clan up there, that's for sure, but different strokes for different folks. He likes seeing them all the time and I am just splitting hairs with that creepy feeling. Better than in the bathroom I guess! My dad has a small photo of my deceased mother in a prominent spot in the living room, and that doesn't bother me, so I guess it depends. I have a mirror in my dining room and hate it because I hate looking at myself while eating. I would love a wall of family in a dining room, but maybe not where they were always staring down at me while eating. A montage of smaller photos that one passes by on the way to the table--wonderful. But really, just some random thoughts. As many have said, there is no one right or wrong way if you like it that's all that matters. Also, there are some frames that you can buy that mix photos with design and sometimes sayings, those would look fab in your room. You could fit a little montage on the right side of the doorway. I almost bought a piece at the local big box that was a clock where you could put a photo in every time slot. I also think that "mixing and matching" photo exhibits in one room is probably a no go too. So for example, putting that clock in our bedroom along with the photos on the shelves might bee too much of a good thing.

Hey there Dawn Martinez color finally chosen for family room and kitchen was Sherwin Williams Row House Tan! It's perfect, made everything lighter and fresher looking. Gcubed Yeah - I know, ... we tried so many things in this room, nothing worked 100% . We tried larger, smaller, ottomans, trunks, nesting tables, round wicker table, glass - everything was just the wrong scale or wrong color. The husband (who spends a lot of time in this room) liked this one best, it is one of those lift top tables, so the surface does come up and over more toward the furniture and it has several drawers for storage (for laptop, remote controls, papers etc.) so the room looks neater. We did try a larger sisal rug under this rug but between the furniture is pretty large and the room relatively narrow so it just didn't work. Eventually, the furnishings will be pared down and will allow for the furniture to be positioned better on this rug. I am having a hard time getting used to seeing the table there and now the fireplace looks off, big black square hole and an expanse of off white primer. I need some ideas to help it look better.

i am not a pro... but I have similar situation with lighter couches than yours but lots of natural light and light wood floors, tried accessible beige (100%. and 75%), agreeable grey, natural choice, neutral ground, shoji white and one or two others. In process of painting with pearly white at 115%... it's very different than what we had but I really like that it's warm white, but still crisp look and goes well with lots of elements and looks great with my Naval walls in adjacent library and navy accents.. Many of the other colors looked nice during the day but came off pretty dark and more color forward at night even with lighting.

Sorry that no one else has chimed with suggestions. This forum has been lightly used recently.

You must be doing this project yourself so are handy. Here's a thought. If there is a floor drain near your boiler, move the water softner. That will free space on the wall you reference.

Stairs in the middle would mean you have approximately 500 sq. ft. in each of two rooms. You can easily door-off one half, then finish other. Many people paint the joists (generally sprayed black) rather than install drywall or a drop ceiling. A few lights and a carpet remnant (maybe a TV) would make a nice gym. And if/when you would want to do more, you're set.
