I might have to agree with lindsey, and would go with wicker or rattan in a sun room, with an off white cushion. Simple clean and classic.

Funny you thought it was masculine. I think it looks really feminine. Not a huge fan of feminine so I would put it in a room where I play up the darker colors in the rug, especially the dark brown color.

I tell you it is so great to have a new set of eyes on it - I believe the new wall color in he family room and kitchen will be SW 7689 Row House Tan - looks good in both rooms and with furnishings - perhaps when the room is painted the rug will look more at home? The colors on the wall are dark terracotta (was supposed to be browner/redder) and some sort of mustard/gold (was supposed to be dark straw).

gargigg Well - it's not like I haven't been wrong about a color before... and thr ug may still need to go (sun room is the best option so far) ... I will be picking up a sample of the Row House Tan from Sherwin Williams today (we should set up a sample color exchange somewhere, I am on like number 10) and will try it out. It is much lighter than what is on the walls now seems to work with the furniture and dark wood shelves and mantle - it seems to work with the cabinets in the kitchen too. Will know tomorrow for sure.

Good luck and post it on your other thread once the samples are up! I spent a couple of months online searching for color ideas for my new apartment but was lucky that the colors I had my heart set on actually did work out and had very little sampling to do. But it is hard!

This is the current floor color Solna Viejo MT Porcelain Wood Look 6x35 - it is in the family room, kitchen and dining room, hallway, foyer, downstairs bath ...well everywhere but living room - which has carpet.

Chairs were a bust, too light more like a beige with a hint of sage, the green in the rug is tough, it's darker than it appears and has some sage, some blue. The coral, terracotta red is darker than the walls. I would love a toasty- linen- beige as long as it doesn't take me back to gold ... even though SW 6128 Blonde looks really good with the rug and furniture ..but then it's right back to gold I go.

Paint experts? base of any tan is a gold color, not wanted?

... and do you like the stark white of fp brick? it could be considered along with wall paint change.

Of course everdebz - I am like a student over here - taking notes, measurements and drawing diagrams - soaking everything up! lindsey_9002 I think Benjamin Moore Pale Oak and Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist are too gray for me. everdebz The stark white of the fireplace brick is primer - we never got around to painting it, but once color is chosen for walls we will most likely paint it the same color as whatever is chosen for the trim. SW 7538 Tamarind is now also on the list for review. The mantle is a little crowded, my husband is a collector of bits and pieces and likes to put things on the mantle, on shelves, on the walls etc. he likes rocks, pottery, just odds and ends and I struggle with what to do with some of the items.

Wanted to give everyone an update-things are still not completed at my house and now there is another project added. I have taken this rug out of the Family Room and placed it over the light carpet in the Living Room where I have a red La-Z-boy sofa bed similar to the one pictured. The red in the area rug is the same red as the sofa. The room has been Benjamin Moore Hillsborough Beige since apparently 2007 (says the paint can). painters are FINALLY coming this week to paint the entire first floor. A last minute decision was made to put the rug in the living room and paint it SW Eastlake Gold which will coordinate with the rug. The only other furnishings that will stay in that room are two La-Z-boy armless chairs in a light off white beige color. the chair style is similar to the one posted below but mine is a different fabric. Will need new lamps, tables art work and curtains for the room now - wasn't planning on that ...oh well.

This sounds like it might be a good solution, if the couch is the same soft red that is in the rug -- that can't be an easy color to match. But it's a good color base if you like vintage or tribal handwoven fabric accessories, like the pillow peeking in the photo of the rug. I think you can have fun putting this room together.

I'm still trying to get my mind around the concept of an armless easy boy recliner -- don't get me wrong, it looks fantastic, but I am not sure I would know how to operate it with no armrests for leverage!

Karenmo -hahaha - the armless chairs do not recline, they are accent chairs that were purchased from La-Z-boy. The sleeper sofa is pretty much the same red as the red in the area rug. The whole room needs to be redone though. I guess Global/Tribal it is ...

I have had lamps a bit like yours - with a sandy-rough texture. I couldn't find shades for them...

everdebz the lamps by the couch? Those lamps and the "tables" (actually nightstands) are from my old bedroom set, purchased in the 90's. The lampshades are the original shades.

I'm looking at this picture wondering if the wall color really needs to be changed....it's hard to tell...but now I see what you mean about changing artwork, lamps, etc.

I bought mine in the 90's - I wanted to keep the lamp bases, and buy new shades - I had no luck...

On second thought, perhaps you could continue to use the lamps....possibly if you painted the bases black? (I can't see what the pattern is that is on that surface so maybe that wouldn't work)

Karenmo I really like those curtains - maybe I can find something similar and not as pricey - I have to really keep the cost down because all of the the work done in the house recently (and I was not planning on re-doing this room at all still have an empty dining room to deal with). The lamps have like a shell motif - I dunno - here's a pic. everdebz are these the same as yours? Had to ditch the SW Eastlake Gold - looked fine in the living room but it looked way too orange in the foyer. So going with SW 9186 Caramelized instead - it is similar but not as orange as the Eastlake Gold. Liked the Lola Albellan artwork and the Ombre Lamps you posted everdebz - but the colors and feel are not quite what I want in the living room but may add one in the kitchen or may buy a pair for the dining room ( I like her Fiesta Primaveral I and II, When the Wind Blows I and II and the Exotico Oooh I and II ...*sigh* on the wish list for now). I think I am going for the overall look and feel of the photo that Manon Floreat posted in this thread, but not the artwork there either.

Karenmo - those embroidered Aria curtains are the bomb! Delicate and add a great touch.

......and "the rug" is right back where it started .... added a coffee table. Now just need to do something about the fireplace, doesn't look right now that there is a coffee table there...

The rug does go nicely with your furniture and drapes. I forget, did you every consider layering it over a neutral/light colored rug (sisal, seagrass, or the like) that is just a smidge bigger so that all the furniture feet land on it?

Did you buy the coffee table or moved from another room? I think a round or square may be better given the 3 seating areas and fireplace. You may need to scoot the one seating piece's feet onto the rug as well. A side table between 2 pieces and a drink table next to the other. As is now, no once can access the coffee table. I'm not an expert, but I believe the table needs to be 16-18" from seating to be functional (feet or drinks/food).

Hey there Dawn Martinez color finally chosen for family room and kitchen was Sherwin Williams Row House Tan! It's perfect, made everything lighter and fresher looking. Gcubed Yeah - I know, ... we tried so many things in this room, nothing worked 100% . We tried larger, smaller, ottomans, trunks, nesting tables, round wicker table, glass - everything was just the wrong scale or wrong color. The husband (who spends a lot of time in this room) liked this one best, it is one of those lift top tables, so the surface does come up and over more toward the furniture and it has several drawers for storage (for laptop, remote controls, papers etc.) so the room looks neater. We did try a larger sisal rug under this rug but between the furniture is pretty large and the room relatively narrow so it just didn't work. Eventually, the furnishings will be pared down and will allow for the furniture to be positioned better on this rug. I am having a hard time getting used to seeing the table there and now the fireplace looks off, big black square hole and an expanse of off white primer. I need some ideas to help it look better.

What about a nice planter and plant on your hearth? The greenery and basket will cut down that white plaster look you don't like.

I'd get something tall with large green leaves (think fiddle fig but maybe something more suited for your area and lighting) - and the pot can sit in a deep basket (12-18"?) or a clay or porcelain planter. Basically such that one side of the fireplace will have greenery "covering" it. Just a though.

The green would nicely break up all the tans/beige/white/browns in that area. You could potentially repeat the greenery with a live plant on the coffee table.
