Dry, shady dirt under cedars

Hello! I am kicking ideas around for the backyard, and a large part has me stumped. On three sides, I have lines of cedar trees verrry close together. They are all healthy. I have around 32 altogether. Behind the trees is a privacy fence.

Under the trees is dry, shady dirt. One area has a bit of vinca. The dirt is covered in sticks and old berries, etc. Will any other plants grow there? I was thinking some sort of understory shrubs would be nice. I tried aucuba, and they died. Not sure why. Something ate the aralia. Ditto the potted Japanese maple.

Since the area is large, cost is an issue. Any miracle shrub suggestions? Or do I stick with vinca? There is a ton of room for any plants to spread.

I don't have any dogs or outside pets, but I do have a 6 year old son.
