Tree died - how to quick fill my front yard???

Hi - well, my one big tree in the front yard just never came back this spring. It had bores. (boo hoo). Ok. They told me not to plant a new tree for at least 6 months so the roots could start to decay.

My question is, what can I put in front that will provide some quick fill? It is NAKED looking. This is Dallas, with a western exposure - so BLAZING afternoon sun all summer.

Anything upright or fullish? Not really looking for perennials, since I will be putting in another tree or two - but not opposed to some if they can work with the shade/afternoon sun combo that I have, which is tricky. Combos would be good...

Thought of purple fountain grass with rudbeckia (or really tall annual sunflowers), and the combo potato/sweet potato vine? Some different levels?

Ok - help!!
