Chartruese Plants...Im in Love..Stop me Now!

Ok..kidding..but I have grown sooo attracted to the chartruese colored leaves, and flowers...I just bought and planted the Caryopteris incana (blue mist shrub) that is chartruese...

and..my very most favorite...the Dicentra spectabilis 'Gold Heart' Bleeding heart...Heres my pic...its so strong and healthy now..I will have to ground my puppies if they hurt this plant..LOL

and my other one I have babied for (I think...senior moments) 2 years...is an oak leaf hydrangea I believe called "little honey"

This one has a bloom started on it this year..will be the first year to bloom.

I just think chartruese makes a garden bright and cheerful...

Show me your chartruese plants....(yea get me more hooked..lol)

I LOVE Chartruse plants!

Perhaps we could start "Chartruse Anonymous"!

I currently have Duranta 'Gold Mound', 'Cuban Gold', and Variegated Duranta.

I have Margaurite sweet potato.

I have Chartruse Althernanthera, Chartruse coleus, and Chartruse zinnias. (the zinnias are not blooming yet tho)

I know there are other things out there that are chartruse, but I can't think of them. I do not have that bleeding heart tho.......

Bummer.

Yeah, I did it years ago and got jumped on by practically everyone. I don't care. :-) I'm an English ivy REBEL! You should have see what happened when I was a new gardener and said I really disliked the gardens of most "gardener's gardeners," which are so often focused on the delights of individual plants that they often have a deaf ear to the entire composition that's presented. I probably said it differently nearly 10 years ago, but boy, forget the Hague, people were looking for a rope and a handy branch.... >It depends on how you define "damage." If pulled off of a surface, Boston Ivy leaves it's "feet" behind which can look unsightly. It may or may not matter, depending on what and where the surface is. You can power wash it off, though! Right? So it's not really damage if you can remove it.... I suddenly realized that helleborus may not work in Dallas. You'll have to check. Vinca minor does great.

thyme2dig - maybe mine were ratty because of the local slug population, or maybe they got a little too much shade. After spring, they consistently looked terrible. I envy yours, since I think it's great looking in spring and would love to have the same look all summer. david883 - that's beautiful! Based on its habit, I don't think it's 'My Monet.' I have a variegated gold/green leaved weigela (don't have the name), that I finally hard pruned this spring after blooming. It responded very well, and the cuttings all rooted too. (We'll see if they overwinter.) echinaceamaniac - appreciate your input on the 'My Monet' and lamb's ears too. I've pretty much decided that I'll use them for now since I have some I can transplant. If I find something different, there's always next year!

Hey, Beavis, gorgeous gardens. What species/cultivar of lavendar is that? Also, what are the yellow daisy-like flowers? Maryann, I have used three of the Espoma products, 'Holly Tone', the one for bulbs, and the balanced fert, too. I've been using them for about 3 or 4 years now. I use cheapo tomatoe fertilizer for my clematis, but I generally just look at the numbers and make a decision on what to use. Just because it's designated for tomatoes or whatever, doesn't mean it won't work for other plants, too. Anything to fool the consumer, right?

Coll, I think your garden is just stunning! You mention the garden is fairly small, and you have about 125 hostas, and also that you have a bathroom area for your dogs. How big is your yard and garden, actually? I posted some photos of some of my hostas the other day, and am going to add a couple of wider angle photos to show how the yard sits (size, arrangement, etc). Would you maybe be able to do the same? I'd love to see the total overall effect. You said that in the photos you put up, we just couldn't see the weeds, failures, etc, and I have to admit that I tried to avoid those in my first photos as well, but I'm going to go for it and lay the whole thing out there for all to see! LOL! I'm hoping you'll do the same :-)

Janie, I thought creeping jenny was intrusive???? At the local nursery I go to often, they have had it..and I love it..but I thought it would take over?
Ohhh I had the chartruese coleus last year and could not find it this year...sheshhh...
I stuck it in this bed cuz I had nowhere else to put it...and low and behold..a thing of beauty....I loved it..

The others you listed I'll have to research...thanks Janie...now I'll HAVE to buy more..and then FIND some place to put them..so much for my PLAN this year...
I give up...planning just does not work for me...

I have a couple sweet potato vines in pots in my front yard that really pop b/c they are so lime green. Also, I have 2 different red coleus, one which has a chartruese border around the leaves. LOVE it!

I've heard Creeping Jenny is invasive too. Chartruse is a lovely color. It only looks good on my plants however. I found the cutest chartruese shirt...I looked horrid in it. PJ

Dena--I got them at Houston plants and Garden world earlier this spring. I will try to locate a tag so i can tell you the name.

I love chartruese plants also and the pictures posted above are beautiful!

Here's a couple more plants for consideration. First is the Texas smoke tree. It grows as a large shrub, has wonderful bright foliage all year, pinkish when emerging in the spring and beautiful red and yellow fall color. Nothing seems to bother it and it demands no special care at all. I have two of them which are showing their 'smoky' blooms now:

Also the Pretoria canna is a stunning accent plant.

*Drool* Love that canna!!! What color are the flowers? That smoke tree is really nice, too! I don't think I've seen one of those before.

Me too..Love that canna. I'm not even that fond of canna's because mine always worms....I got rid of them a while back, but that is beautiful...I might have to give that another try...

If I remember correctly the smoke tree is a variety of the American smoke tree that is found in Texas, but only in the Lost Maples area. So we know it does well in calciferous soils.

Here's an old picture of the Pretoria canna in blossom. I read somewhere that some gardeners remove the blossoms, but I like 'um. Hot flowers for a hot climate!

I bought 3 licorice plants that are that color. One is in a container in a part shade spot with a purple penta and ivy - looks fabulous together. The other two are in full sun in containers with Rosemary - another fabulous contrast in colors. I also have the chatreuse creeping Jenny in a container with a miniature red rose. I took some of it out of the container and stuck it in the ground around my pond, so by the end of this year I should have lots of chatreuse in my garden. I am finding that I really like that chartreuse color too. It sure does brighten things up!

The Creeping Jenny is not invasive like some other things are.....like wiedelia, for example. I keep it in pots, and I love the way it drapes over the edges. I keep it in the ground around the pond too, and in the fern beds. I figure I would rather have Creeping Jenny there than weeds.

Where do I sign up for that smoke tree? I want it! I have the Canna, planted in urns with Purple Heart around the base of each. I love those big honking orange flowers too!
