Gopher control - is it possible to live in peace?

A few days ago my new Blue Hill Sage fell over. This surprised me as I had inspected it a couple of hours earlier and saw that it was not only flourishing, but also about to burst into bloom.

On closer inspection I discovered its roots had been eaten to the stem, and on digging, discovered a tunnel right up to the plant. I'm guessing it's a gopher, and that a lot of other plants are soon going to be lunch.

My question is, will planting in punched plastic pots work against these critters? Has anyone tried this? I don't want chicken wire everywhere and I don't have the heart to harm this pest, and I doubt I will be able to encourage the thief to move somewhere else.

If anyone has a list of plants that gophers do not eat, that would also be a huge help.

Thanks! BTW the remains of the sage is in water and I'm hoping it will root.
