1/2 price Hosta's - now too much green

Lowe's had their one gallon hosta's marked 1/2 off this past weekend; I purchased 10.

I haven't planted them yet because when I went to set them, I noticed that the placement between the cast iron plant and the ivy made the bed ALL GREEN. Any suggestions on brightening this shady spot.

If I plant caldium's, like I normally do, to bring white into the shade they usually fade (as I do too) in hot summer. I haven't had much luck with impatiens either when planted directly into the soil.

I am amending the beds this year with cow manure and there is plenty of oak leaf matter/mulch remaining in the bed.

Let me know what you think, and thank you for any input.

I plant the Aaron caladiums in my shade bed to get the bit of white, and they haven't faded for me. They aren't quite as white as the solid white with green veins, they are a more subtle white, but I like them better.

There are yellow hostas that will brighten a shady corner. I have had better luck with my hostas in containers. Something--either a critter or a fungus was getting the roots. You might also consider the lime Elephant Ears. Begonias in a pot will soldier through the heat. Something always eats them when I leave them in the ground.
Here is a shot of a small corner of my garden. The big yellow hosta on the left is Squash Casserole. It hasn't been through a hot summer yet, but I sure do like it.

mmqchdygg, I should take a look at that but have already bought too many seeds. That is one I really like though. I could try to save seeds from the one I have going now, don't know how w/foxglove, and am a little wary that maybe the plant may have lost its vigor and not produce the best seeds. I will give that plant some bloom booster if it comes back or if I get any more seedlings. My darn white foxglove, I went out with my camera this am, and the thing's blooms are facing the foundation of the house which is white! It must be confused and gets more reflected light than from the actual sun which is a scant 6 hours there. I was looking forward to seeing that one bloom, well it doesn't look normal. The partial good news today is that some seeds are starting to sprout in my milk jugs. I had them all taped up, ventilated and labelled, but you should not try that in spring. They were rapidly getting moldy plus I was in a hurry and usually run my things through a bucket of bleach water & rinse well. There were some milk rings in a couple jugs, always rinse but there it was, maybe that didn't help. So I frantically looked for what to do, sprayed with dilute H2O2, ripped off all the tape (packing tape this time, much easier), opened up the jugs, had to leave top hinged part on and pegged to ground because I taped my labels on the handles. THEN I had to cover it all with chicken wire and peg THAT to the ground as best I could because of chipmunks and squirrels.

Royal Standard and Blue Angel were two of my thoughts as well. My flowers do rise well above the leaves so it isn't Elegans. Any thoughts on Lime Green. I can't imagine that it is Sum and Substance...it seems much neater and more upright mound that S&S? Thanks for your thoughts. I do appreciate it!

Up $1000?! Yikes. Past annoying! The same model or did you by any chance have the price for a Performance model and now only the Precision is available? That's a huge jump. Have you checked around or contacted Capital? Of the 3 choices you asked about first, I'd likely choose the Fisher and Paykel. I have a Fisher and Paykel dbl wall oven, as well as their laundry equipment. I like their quality and performance. I have been very positively impressed with their prompt, friendly, and eager-to-please customer service when I had a problem with my original oven. (It was replaced without question and they've checked to make sure I'm remaining happy with it.) I had a JennAir electric range about 10 yrs ago and made them buy it back, so I'd be leery of that choice, although I know a lot could have changed since then, and I think they are owned by Whirlpool now. Their engineering and design was flawed and they seem unapologetic about it. I do like Electrolux Icon products. I have their hood vent and their all-fridge (2 of those) and an all-freezer. Their ovens seem very nice...They have wonderful racks, my trusted appliance guy says he's used one at a show and was very impressed with its multi-rack baking performance, and there are good reports about them here. Unfortunately, you don't get the 19K BTU burners of all the same power, but 2 that go to 18K and 2 that go to 14K aren't bad. Best wishes!

Stanlie, these people are power-crazy and do not want people (G-d forbid) to make a tree or shrub decision by themselves. Only the MANAGEMENT and BOARD know what trees and shrubs we should have. Judging from the extreme overuse of purple ornamental plum trees, trees planted by the curb way too close (resulting in stunting of the shorter species), etc., I have little confidence in the knowledge of the "landscape company" or their "landscape workers". No, they would not allow me to plant a large shrub or small tree. As a matter of face, I recall my neighbor Tom last year telling me quite indignantly that the "landscape workers" removed a Rose of Sharon his wife had planted 5 years earlier, because "it was too close to the building". They didn't even tell him or give him an opportunity to move it. They just snatched it out of the ground, and a rose bush, too.

You might want to try various coleus, as they bring much colour to any shady spot that needs it.

What about calla lilies? I'm trying them in a dappled shade bed this year. My Texas Gold Columbine is doing well here too.

How about the gold heart bleeding heart? Its chartruese (sp?) and I just got one and its in the ground and looks beautiful in the dark corner.
Haven't seen it bloom yet but hopefully this year!

Wallyworld has the regular bleeding heart the other day. I thought about picking up a couple of those but . . $7.98 each and I haven't had much luck with them, because I don't think they are getting enough water!! I might try again.
