With ornamental plum tree now gone, too much sun for my hostas!

Last season, I noticed that my hostas and heuchies, facing east, were getting sort of sunburned. That is because the ornamental plum tree in the front yard died and was removed. I'm sure all the regulars here remember the traumatic way it was removed, too. It had just the right location to throw some shade onto my garden. Now, no shade. The sun comes in to the garden from an ENE direction. There are tall oak trees lining the street, but their shadows do not cover my garden. Any suggestions (aside from planting a tree, which I'm not allowed to do) to provide a bit of shade for my hosts and heuchies? Tall plants I could plant among them, for example?
