I'd take the wait and see approach.
You may be surprised that it turns out to be that they are OK or even better than OK.

The first year of sun would certainly sunburn your heuchs and hosta, but that very well could have toughened them up for this year.

It's very possible that ENE sun could be ideal.

I had similar events, getting trees and branches removed, then making screens out of 1x2s and burlap. Just last year a tree guy did much more than what I asked him to do, when I did not watch. So I have to buy another little pink dogwood or similar. I bought 2 little dogwoods and similar to give shade to other hostas, and hostas are happy there. Bernd

If you recall, I was all set up to get a FREE pagoda dogwood from the city in a city-wide tree giveaway. But then, the co-op shot down my plans and plowed under the whole area around the removed dead tree. They are idiots, and my poor hostas and heuchies are paying the price. I know I would not be permitted to erect screens or burlap. That's why I asked if there were some tall plants I could plant among my hostas and heuchies which would provide them some shade. How about coreopsis, delphinium, etc.?

What about a Holly? They do pretty well in pots. Of course, with the pointy ends, they might injure someone and cause a lawsuit.

I love/hate co-ops and HOAs and condo boards. I have some hostas growing in a mostly sun bed. They do get sunburned by August but they grow in a spot I look at every day, so I didn't want a permanent screen and other bigger plants are not an option. I use a length of crop cover (left from an ill fated attempt at saving a peach tree from cicadas). I take out when we get a run of sunny days, and put it on in the a.m. and take it off at happy hour. It took me a little while at first to figure out how to set up a little frame to hook the cover to (sticks and strings with button holes and grommets in the cover--nothing really noticeable when the cover is not there). After putting it up the first couple times, it got easier and much quicker.

Esther, so your hostas get too much morning sun? ENE? My sun comes up in the East, then goes to S and down in W. My hostas love morning sun, but I am in zone 5. Most lilies get tall and could shade, you could plant groups of them. Initially a lily has only one stem, in the following years mine became clusters. Good luck! Bernd

Bernd, I was actually thinking of putting in some lilies in the back of the garden, up against the Obligatory Shrubs. If I put them on the southern-facing end of the garden, where I see the sun shining from, wouldn't they block the view of the plants north of them?

Stanlie, these people are power-crazy and do not want people (G-d forbid) to make a tree or shrub decision by themselves. Only the MANAGEMENT and BOARD know what trees and shrubs we should have. Judging from the extreme overuse of purple ornamental plum trees, trees planted by the curb way too close (resulting in stunting of the shorter species), etc., I have little confidence in the knowledge of the "landscape company" or their "landscape workers". No, they would not allow me to plant a large shrub or small tree. As a matter of face, I recall my neighbor Tom last year telling me quite indignantly that the "landscape workers" removed a Rose of Sharon his wife had planted 5 years earlier, because "it was too close to the building". They didn't even tell him or give him an opportunity to move it. They just snatched it out of the ground, and a rose bush, too.
