Dog Poop around fruit trees
Comments (40)Lots of anecdotal claims, but little conclusive evidence that ivermectins have any significant effect on earthworm populations. See study linked below. On the dog poop deal...I'd be more concerned about the risk of visceral/ocular larval migrans from Toxocara(roundworm) eggs than I would bacterial contamination - and then only on 'drops', but if you washed them, the risk would be infinitesimally minimal. Hand-picked fruit... no problem whatsoever. 'Wildlife' are not pristine and blameless; there have been cases of E.coli O157/H7 infection traced to unpasteurized cider made from apples collected in an orchard frequented by deer - and the exact strain of O157/H7 was isolated from deer droppings as was isolated from the human cases. cuznfloyd - I wouldn't advocate fertilizing herbivore pastures with manure from non-herbivores. I see Sarcocystis cysts in muscle tissue from virtually every mature cow I look at, courtesy of dogs & coyotes defecating in pastures. Additionally, two of the leading causes of abortion in sheep/goats(Toxoplasma gondii) and cattle(Neospora caninum) - are associated with accidental consumption of oocysts from feline(T.gondii) or canine(N.caninum) feces. Comments (26)"Things" is this case are: Here is what we found. At One Year: Helminth Ova Assay: 8 viable Helminth Ova/4 grams total solids. At 18 months: Helminth Ova Assay: 2 viable Helminth Ova/4 grams total solids. At One Year: Salmonella Assay: 2.4 MPN / 4 grams total solids. At 18 months: Salmonella Assay: less than .84 MPN / 4 grams total solids. At One Year: Fecal Coliform Assay: 330,000 MPN / gram total solids. At 18 months: Fecal Coliform Assay: 620 MPN / gram total solids. At One Year: Total Solids Assay: 46.1% At 18 months: Total Solids Assay: 36.2% In short, While Fecal and Salmonella levels decreased over time, and even viable Helminth Ova numbers decreased from 8 to 2, that is still 2 too many for me to feel comfortable recommending backyard composting of pet waste. We have not done any further testing. We don't recommend composting petwaste to the public based on this information. I include picture of viable toxocara ova found in our pet waste compost when I teach Composting 101 to our new Master Composters. The risks are real. More testing certainly needs to happen before best practices recommendations can be made to the public. For now we recommend burial, and landfilling. Comments (1)The worm medicine WILL kill the vermicomposting worms also. You might want to try a composting pail for this instead....See MoreOld dog poops when new dog came home
Comments (9)I also agree about elevating the older dog to a dominant position in the house. When our dog died, and we brought in a new companion for Ricky, we intentionally always went to Ricky first, and said so. Ricky, let's go outside. Our pup learned to "wait for Ricky" as he would walk proudly out the door first. When we fed them, we would say Ricky eats first. Actually we only set down his bowl first, then fed the pup. Even now a year later, we always let Ricky go first and make a big deal of it. Blaze knows nothing else. Ricky leaves and enters the house first. He eats first and gets in and out of the van first. We brush him first and pet him first. Even if Blaze runs up to us to the gate first, we often will stop petting him and pet Ricky when he arrives. All of our dogs are lap dogs. We just sit on the floor. In time when the older one feels more comfortable, the little dog may be a more exclusive lap dog, but for now, I would sit on the floor, and pet the older one first. We keep our dogs in the most popular area of our house, so we go to them. They are rarely alone, but we do not allow them into our living room or bedrooms. Those are off limits, so we don't have dogs with us 24 hours, and we sleep without dog dander since we are very allergic. Therefore we can easily declare that Ricky is first in whatever we do. I don't think you will have a problem after a couple of weeks. If you do, you might consider discussing this with the Vet to see if there is a mild medication you can give your older dog for anxiety. One more thing - when we were walking our dogs, Ricky used to always poop. We would scoop it up, and walk with it. Once my husband hurt his back and had to stop walking with us for a couple of weeks, I quickly got tired of this process. Before our walks I would take the dogs out as usual, and I began telling Ricky to do his business. He would walk inside, and I would call him out. I kept telling him to do his business, and he began doing it. Now he understand that he must do it before we walk. We haven't needed the bags for about 6 weeks. It may be that your dog is performing for you in a more dramatic fashion than the pup can do. You might keep the dog outside with you (and not the young dog), and insist that he poops before he comes in. Even give him a treat if he performs for you. We all know that a dog's brain is wired completely different from ours. Sammy...See Moreryanzone7
