did anyone in the Kendall, NY area lose a dog?

She is soooo cute and friendly! The poor thing. The neighbors said she was sitting on the edge of the road where i found her from early in the morning till I found her yesterday evening. They said they didn't try to get her because she was a pitbull. That just gets me so mad....I said so if it was a mutt, or something else you would have helped her? Any dog could be mean, watch their body language. She came right up to me when I called her with her tail wagging, and rolled on to her back. Then she followed me to my house.

Nobody knows who she belongs to.

I wish I could keep her, but my husband was hard enough to deal with when I got Lily our Great Dane....

I called Animal control, but I'm not going to let them take her. Being Pit, they might put her down right away. The pet store down the street said they do adoptions....

I just had to vent about this poor sweet dog. She knows how to sit, takes food out of my hand VERY gently...did not seem to even care when the chickens walked by her. *sigh*

If anyone thinks they know who might be missing a pit...I have one!!

Thats why I posted this here, since it's sorta local.

There's a chance she's microchipped. Most vets nowadays have a scanner to check for microchip info. I'm assuming she has no collar.

Call the Town Clerk and ask if there are reports of lost dogs, sometimes they get notice.

I don't know what newspapers (including freebies) are in your area, but check them for lost dog ads as well.

Unfortunately, since she was sitting at the side of the road, I have a bad feeling someone drove her there, dumped her, and left, and she was waiting for them to come back (which they never will).

Good luck. I hope I'm wrong, and that she just got away from somewhere, got spooked, then got lost.

Some of the local papers will put a free found ad in for you as a public service so make a couple of calls. It sounds to me like she was left by the owner there and was sitting in the same spot waiting to get picked back up :(

Our local shelter is fussy about the animals they take in and won't take an aggressive dog. You might have to try adopting her out yourself. (Try freecycle in your area). If you do go the route of adopting her out yourself, you'll have to take the time to really screen the people. It's hard to find a suitable home for a pitbull where the animal will be cared for correctly.

Do exercise a bit of caution with a new animal. We adopted an adorable cat that was abandonded. The nicest disposition ...until she got comfortable in our home. She turned out to be very nasty which is why she got dumped in the first place, I'm sure.

Hi Dave. i dont know much but from what i have seen and been reading about. could you dig as deep as you can in your flower beds and berry a plastic tube of about 6" / 8" dia. drill holes up it's length stopping about 6 or so inches from the top. place a cap on the top end and leave sticking out of the ground a bit. drop some mushed up veg in the bottom with a layer of hay straw or paper shreds or sawdust. as you would a compost toilet. the holes around the tube and the veg much will encourage worms to enter the tube and will help break down the poo. depending on the size of your flower beds you could alternate with putting poo in them which might give the worms time to work there magic. any goodness the worms make will leach out into the surrounding area and should give your lnts the boost you are looking for.

Wow, what a lot of really great ideas for me . . .and for all of us here. Thank you!!! I'm following a lot of it and have lost 12 pounds so far. Mainly by cutting out most carbs and white sugar,and as Kelly suggested, doing interval training. I'm also keeping bags of fresh, pre washed baby carrots, baby bell peppers and green beans to munch on when I get hungry. Last night we grilled out burgers and I had mine without the bun. It's getting easier to eat like this and I'm finding the cravings for sweets and cheese are becoming less with each day . . . thankfully! As I mentioned in an earlier post here, I wasn't vastly overweight, just at the tops of what my weight should be for my height and age. Now I'm 12 pounds lighter and my clothes fit so much better! I'd still like to drop another 8 pounds. We fly out this Thursday morning to Palm Beach and then on to the Tampa area 4 days later. I've already eaten dinner and lunches out several times since I started this weight loss drive and have found it pretty easy to eat out healthfully . . . as long as it's in a regular and not a fast food restaurant. Salads with grilled meats, nuts, etc. are my go-to's, with a lite salad dressing on the side; hold the croutons and bread sides (LOL). But, as always, I have to be so careful that "lite" doesn't contain any artificial sweeteners, as I'm extremely allergic to them, especially aspertame/aspartame. So many thanks for all the great, helpful ideas. I'll continue to read them, although I'm not sure if I'm taking my laptop with me to Florida yet. Lynn

My old lab has problems from time to time. I think it's that equilibrium problem the previous posters discussed, during her worst episode the only thing I remember the vet saying was that it was "vertigo like" and her brain goes "scrambled eggs." We thought she had had a massive stroke so took her to the vet thinking that we were going to lose her. She couldn't walk for 4 hours and then acted drunk for a few hours, then was about 15 degrees off (would walk sideways into chairs and plants) for a couple of days. More recently she has funny little episodes of losing her balance or twitching like she's having a small seizure or something, but it is all part of that equilibrium thing and that there isn't much to do about it but let the episodes pass. It can be upsetting to see though. One thing that always bothered me was that shortly before the bad episode (almost 2 years ago), our dog had two instances when she ran into a glass door hard. I've always wondered if that caused some problems with her inner ear bones that later led to this. I have a relative who works with humans with inner ear/vertigo problems and they do exercises to realign the bones or something. I wish the dog could try something like that. Thanks :) I know there are no guarantees. While the hope of course is that Molly does well during and after surgery and lives until 17 or 18, anything can happen at any time. But, I don't want to see her get weaker and sicker from this terrible disease, so at the very least I can prevent that. Preventing that alone is worth the money and effort, no matter the outcome. She is too happy and kind of a creature to have any suffering in her life and I will do everything I can to prevent her from experiencing it. I'm very hopeful about some of the clinical trials going on now. Not for Molly, they won't be in time for her (hence why we're going overseas) but I think/pray a breakthrough is just a few years away. MVD is one of the leading causes of death and disability in dogs, and it affects millions of dogs. I truly hope that some of these non-invasive valve replacement solutions will mean far fewer dogs suffering from this horrible condition. {And potentially some of these solutions could one day be used to provide a less invasive option for people with mitral valve disease too).

Well, here is an update:

Animal control came out and said they do not place Pitbulls. So basicly she would have been put down after 5 days. I told her I would take care of her and find her a home. She also said that whoever had her didn't take care of her. The dog warden in another town that I called said they found a male pit last night, very friendly but dirty. They don't find pits that often. So the theory is someone dropped them around town...

I called a local pet store, and the owner who owns 2 pits herself said she would take her! so I dropped her off, and they said she will get a good home.

I named her Matilda.

Thanks for the happy update. My DD and her husband adopted a pit bull found chained to a fence in Brooklyn, obviously used as bait for training fighting dogs and had recently had puppies. Thank goodness this sweet dog is finally getting the vet care, love and attention she deserves. Given her tough life it might be expected for her to be aggressive, but nothing could be further from the truth.
