When I was in Magnolia area, I was helping a friend get her booth ready for the TX Renny festival. The booth is about 20 ft tall with a skylight. A hummer got in and wanted to get out the sky light, but I remembered JD's shot, so I told my friend to just wait till it gets tired and it will come down here and we can cup it in our hands and put it out the open window.

I left to powder my nose and sure enough, the hummer came down and my friend did just what I told her and it flew away to freedom. She got rather agitated when she realized I had never done this, I was just telling her what to do based on JD's photograph. She's not a nature/plant/bird person. :) heheheh I forgot to mention those hummers can take off a thumb if you're not careful.

Did YOUR hummer get aggressive? That's what tickles me about those little snots. They are SO tiny, but they don't know it!!

Thank you ladies for the birthday wishes! The tree is a Nyssa sylvatica (aka Black Gum, Sour Gum or Tupelo). I have 9 of them growing on my property that were here when I bought the land. Many smaller ones have popped up since. Only a few of the big ones bear fruit. They like wet or dry woodland soil, will create groves over time, and are native to E. North America. They get non-messy blue fruit in late summer/early fall, neon red or orange fall foilage that stops you in your tracks, need no pruning unless you want to, summer leaves are deep green and glossy, and they are pest free. Down side, you never see them for sale in garden centers, but I've seen them available on-line (mostly native sites) as seedlings. You can start them from seed. (OK, does anybody want seed - if I can get it before the birds do - or maybe a small seedling, as I find them?) They are bird magnets in fruit and bee/hummingbird/nectar insect magnets in bloom. They do not grow exceptionally fast, but the wildlife value is high as a food source, if they turn out to be female trees. FTM - hope you get some great photo ops when the ice closes in - I'm excited for you (and us)! Brenda - lucky you - getting regular visits from a friendly RCKinglet! They are so pretty and like many little birds have a personality, or so it seems. Jean - those holes are huge. I've not seen them before - thanks for posting them. I wonder if any will become nest sites or are they drilling for insects and sap only? I have a pair of RBW that have drilled their nest site into the top of a broken off trunk, of what was once a double trunked oak. The big oak was hit by a small tornado or something that whipped through here a few years back and it wiped out one of the two trunks. A real big tree and so high up I can see their nest hole from afar. P.S. FTM - Yes, I agree - next poster please start a Bird Sightings 3 so it will be easier for Brenda to open quicker until the broadband fairy visits her home! I feel bad about taking the nests down, especially considering all the work they put into it, but after seeing the cooked eggs in there the one year I kind of wondered how they felt. Maybe they just don't care. Gotta give 'em credit though, they're persistent! I didn't think about a rubber snake or something. I used to tack a piece of cardboard up just setting on the sensor unit up to the house. At first I thought they might try to build under it, but they didn't. Looked tacky, but it worked. And I have to go check the dryer vent too. They built in there one year too. I really jumped when the bird poked its head out at me the one day! I noticed some grass hanging and I went to pull it away and the vent pops open and the bird sticks its head out! Then pops back in. Maybe they thought I was selling something or a religious recruiter! All I know is she made it clear: GO AWAY! :)

Thanks again ladies. I actually ended up selling that piece over the holidays to a gal in Ontario,Canada. She wanted it for her mom and was willing to pay the high cost of shipping from my little neck of the woods in WA state. Jan, the nice thing about staining is that sometimes the stain can do shading work for you when you paint, I didn't even shade the large white flower. I just thinned my white paint and stroked it on letting the undercoat of stain show through. Belle, I had tried other signatures using my initials, first name/last name, but they were too long, didn't look right, etc. and I wanted to sign my name with a brush not a pen. I originally didn't want to use all caps but the signature above is VERY easy to sign with a brush, all straight lines. LOL

I'm sorry, I left the wrong impression. No, everything went just perfectly! She was just freaked out that she listened to me when I really had never done it before.

I will confess, tho. One time I was in the garden and there came the first hummer. I was admiring it, all thrilled. It hung in the air and stared me down, obviously looking right at me. Then it made a downward swoop and came up, same level (face level, eye level) but about 2 ft. closer. I kept watching it - and it did it AGAIN. I mean, I was ***scared of a hummer!!!*** It was quite funny, but man, those babies are aggressive! It finally went about its normal business, me no threat, big oafy human.

Yeah, I had a hummer get that close to me to check me out, but I was wearing a bright red shirt, so I think it thought I was a big flower and was trying to figure out where to get the nectar!

I CAN imagine us humans doing this or feeling this way towards these tiny beautiful birds that think they are Eagles..LOL

Last year, there were two male Ruby throats, in my yard, fighting. I guess they were so involved that they forgot to fly, cause they fell out in the grass. That broke their concentration, and they took off in opposite directions. They are especially aggressive with each other.

Well PJ, apparantly he got into the attic, and I forgot to put the access cover back in place, and he made himaself at home in our absence.

However, he didn't bargain for the trusty dog, who apparantly chased him through every room in the house. (Doooo doooo).

So, he perched up on the refrig, out of harm's way, which is where I found him, on coming home. Then I had to get my long-handled fishing net, to catch and release him back outside.

The wife was not too pleased, about the subsequent clean-up.....like I had anything to do with it.

Came to find out there was a small spot where birds could squeeze in and access the attic. Had to plug that up.

That is so bizarre! Glad I didn't have to clean raven doo. They go a LOT! Ravens in the desert are really big(2ft). They must be smaller where you are or that was a dozy of a hole! PJ

Better quit *luring* those crows in so she has to clean up, lol
My superstitious GM would have had a field day with that one, LOL coming home and a big crow in your house, lol

PJ, it was a youngish bird. Although, I thought it was strange, he got through that small a space, myself. Critters....they are so inventive.

I'm not surprised a Raven found it's way in your house personally.They are so d*mn clever. Have you ever seen those things(Raven) open someone's bag?Pretty darn clever for a bird brain! I've also seen them snag a whole bag of fast food someone left set on their car roof for a minute while they unlocked the door.They are close cousins with Seagulls. Seagulls (and I've heard Ravens) can open ANYTHING. Coolers,backpacks(zippers or velcro),purses...I used to watch them fleece the tourists that didn't have a lock on thier bags(luggage lock)/coolers(strong latch) etc...at the beach. Darn thing might have picked the locks on your house. Clever b*st*rds they are! PJ
