Dress comfortably & *get there early*!

Every plant you see will be big & healthy & you'll want it & all its friends!

but so will everybody else, so, really, *Get there early*!

(duh, don't know yet what "early" means, 'cause they haven't posted the hours yet.

It seems like, in years past, that it officially started at maybe 8:30 AM.

& traffic is heavy & the parking lots get filled up quickly on Plant Sale days, so you may have to walk some distance, so...*get there early*!.)

Hey...that's by where I run... I'll be dressed a bit funny(compression tights,running shoes and an Ipod) but I'll be there early! LOL!!PJ

My husband & I are planning to be there first thing Friday morning too. He goes to the book store & I shop for plants. Last year I got a couple of Iris, Peony 'Sarah Bernhardt', Chaenomeles 'Cameo', & a couple of native azaleas which died because I put the pots under the big oak tree and forgot to water them. All total I spend about $40. I still want the native azaleas. Guess I need to make a shopping list of desired plants. We are big on lists these days, due to gas prices, we try to limit traveling, also we are getting a bit older. There is so much variety at this sale, it is worth the trip. Joyce

Absolutely! I put this on my calendar every spring. The list of plants available is on their website -- it helps to plan ahead for the cultivars you are looking for because it's well organized but crowded. Also, bring your own cardboard box(es) for transport -- otherwise you'll have to buy them on site. Prices are reasonable as well.

I went :-) Like I need any more plants!! Bought a cute little eucryphia from Ian and picked up a couple of other items. It was not as vendor heavy as I expected it to be - looks like some that were expected didn't show, as there were a number of vacant tables. I did have a long chat with Eric Bloom of NW Perennials. This is the last showing from that outstanding local perennial supplier as they are closing their doors at the end of the month. This will be a real loss as it was one of the best smallish local perennial growers, always producing high quality, unusual plants but timing, the economy and the changing gardening scene just got the best of them. They are good people and I hope they land on their feet. I stopped by Wells Medina on my way home, but I managed to resist any further spending. Place looks good with a nice selection of shrubs and new bare root trees available. A good selection of bare root fruits and berries as well. And they were offering a great selection of the new Winter Jewels hellebores from the O'Byrne's - all in full bloom.

Oops! We've been doing this for so long that I forgot to put in the directions & guidelines! The Swap is at Trinity Park in Ft Worth: From I30 on the western edge of downtown Ft Worth, go north on University & take the first right turn into the park. Follow the lane around til you see people & plants! We usually try to set up near the pavilions at the farthest part of the park, but sometimes those are occupied & we ad-lib. We start around 9 AM & stay as long as we want (usually around 1 PM we're all ready to take a nap...) You can bring a dish to share (see the trade thread). Guidelines are loose & general & commonsense: Don't take anything unless/until the person who brought it says you can. It has happened that people will think they've got a trade worked out before the swap, a pre-trade, but there's a misunderstanding about what each person actually has. Maybe your David Austin Rose is in a 1 gallon pot, & you think you're getting a 1-gallon apricot seedling for it, but it turns out that the apricot is an apple! or the apricot is a pit with a sprout emerging from it. If you don't want to complete the trade *for any reason*, all you have to do is say you don't want to complete the trade. If someone tells you, "I don't want to complete the trade", smile & say you're sorry, & trade your item to someone else. Do not bring sticks in dirt to the swap & claim that they're plants! This has only happened a couple of times, but it's not right, it's not nice, & if you do it, you have to leave the swap. (It's not likely that this will happen; we've all been trading for so many years that we take it for granted that nobody we know would do something like this.) Trade fairly. You can trade anything for anything you like, as long as both parties are in agreement; if you want to trade your cow for a package of magic beans, you may do so, but please do not try to make someone trade you their cow for your magic beans! We aren't doing the prize/gift drawing this year, but if you want to being a "prizelike" something to trade, please do so! Examples: garden art garden junk nice books pictures/drawings/illustrations clogs tools vases/decorative pots birdhouses etc. What have I forgotten? I know I've forgotten something... Somebody please remember it & add it to this thread!

Mom and I will be going....well she may decide not to when I tell her what time I want to get there ;0. But if anyone thinks they might want to have lunch or something afterwards, let me know. There are some decent restaurants in that area. We could just pick a time to meet at a particular area at the sale after we decimate the plant displays :).

Sylvia, can you give us an idea of what types of plants we may be able to scarf up?

I think they grow everything themselves & offer only the things that do well here.

Some that I remember seeing in the past are white butterfly ginger & evergreen wisteria, but there're *tons* of plants, & they're all biggies, easier to transplant.

Parking is crowded, & you need to be prepared to haul stuff or bring a cart.

There's a restaurant there in the Botanic Gardens, never been to it, as it looks like white cloth napkins & waiters kind of place, & every time I'm at the BG I'm always in baggy shorts & rubber shoes!

& there's a tea room, probably a leetle more casual, in the Montgomery Street Antique Mall, at the northeast corner of I-30 & Montgomery.

Somewhere down there is a French bakery that I *think* has dining area. It's south of I-30, seems like Montgomery (or University?) slews around to the west, & this is on the right side as you head west.

OH YEAH, I went in the fall and loved it but I should have brought my wagon at least.
Hope I can go to this one. BTW, The plants go very fast and rain does not stop the die hard gardeners :)

Ahem. Had to look that up. I love it. VERY casual.

There's an antique store that backs up (sort of) to the overoverflow parking for the botanic gardens on Montgomery. They used to have a lunch/tea place.

Swiss Pastry Shop is on Vickery. You just head south on Montgomery, and veer right on Vickery and it's on your right. They have lunch, and horribly good pastries.

If you want to venture down Camp Bowie, there are lots of other places. I like Zeke's for fried fish and everything else fried. They have an outdoor patio that is loverly. It's past the intersection of I-30 and Camp Bowie, on the right, which would be about North.

LOVE that place! Have been going there since I was a girl, but haven't been in a while. Montgomery St. Cafe (I think) has great home style food.
