N P A March Mania Plant Sale TODAY @ Bellevue Botanic Garden

Well as long as this weather has us all in the mood for gardening... (or maybe for replacing dead plants) I thought I'd mention a multi-nursery plant sale today, Sunday March 8, at Bellevue Botanic Garden, from 11 am to 3 pm, hosted by the Northwest Perennial Alliance. Please come out in the snow and wind and blow what's left of your hard earned money on plants.... I'm just kidding, I think it will be fun. Spring really isn't that far off now and there should be a lot of good stuff to choose from.

Out of town and unable to go but if the other vendors had offerings half as noteworthy and choice as those Ian tends to show up with it would have certainly have been a sale to be sure to attend.

I didn't know about a St. Patrick's Day planting schedule for other plants, but both my grandfather and my father always planted potatoes as close to St. Patrick's Day as possible. Of course you must take into account the weather and soil conditions. I watch the 10 day weather forecast closely, and plant accordingly. For instance, seeing that we have several above average temperatures ahead during the next ten days, AND the forecast for rain today, I spent a lot of time in the garden preparing beds for seeding, then planted my first batch of onions and potatoes yesterday (March 13). I also planted a new Red Blaze Climbing Rose. It seems that if the soil becomes saturated and cold weather returns, you can often miss out on optimal planting dates. Right now, my peonies are sprouting up to about 6 inches and my lilacs are full of unopened buds. Another thing I watch for is the leafing of Oak trees- I feel more comfortable in planting warmer weather crops when the Oaks tell me that warm weather has arrived. Ron Z

Rose sales, garden bargains & things worth buying

Pink Traviata does fantastic at nearby rose park .. that one is a beast in alkaline clay, hardy for the past 10 years. I'm putting MULCH FILM (black plastic) to kill grass for a new garden next year, but it takes 6 months to completely kill the grass, to be ready for next spring. Our cold zone zaps roses so small, it's so easy to fit into the garden. My La Reine is 1 foot by 0.5 foot, lots of blooms. My Barcelona (very hardy) is even smaller, like a mini-rose. The blooms of own-root are small too, but they get big after 4 years, if the soil is made loamy. When I first got William Shakespeare 2000, it was so small, and the bloom was 1 inch. !! Now in its 5th year, the bush is much bigger, and the bloom is at least 4 inch, I put tons of gypsum in its planting hole, which helps with zillion petals & also sulfate of potash for potassium.

I think they grow everything themselves & offer only the things that do well here. Some that I remember seeing in the past are white butterfly ginger & evergreen wisteria, but there're *tons* of plants, & they're all biggies, easier to transplant. Parking is crowded, & you need to be prepared to haul stuff or bring a cart. There's a restaurant there in the Botanic Gardens, never been to it, as it looks like white cloth napkins & waiters kind of place, & every time I'm at the BG I'm always in baggy shorts & rubber shoes! & there's a tea room, probably a leetle more casual, in the Montgomery Street Antique Mall, at the northeast corner of I-30 & Montgomery. Somewhere down there is a French bakery that I *think* has dining area. It's south of I-30, seems like Montgomery (or University?) slews around to the west, & this is on the right side as you head west.

Re: The white lilies - whether they're crinum americanum or erubescens. I have a similar plant that a woman near Tyler wanted removed from her garden. I sent a query to a bulb group I'm on to see if they could ID them (all I knew is they were stoloniferous and bloomed white, like the photo above). Here is the reply I received: "When you next get a bloom, check to see if the stalk has a reddish cast to it = erubescens. Crinum americanum will grow in ordinary flower beds, but doesn't flower as much as it would have in a moister setting."

I went :-) Like I need any more plants!! Bought a cute little eucryphia from Ian and picked up a couple of other items.

It was not as vendor heavy as I expected it to be - looks like some that were expected didn't show, as there were a number of vacant tables. I did have a long chat with Eric Bloom of NW Perennials. This is the last showing from that outstanding local perennial supplier as they are closing their doors at the end of the month. This will be a real loss as it was one of the best smallish local perennial growers, always producing high quality, unusual plants but timing, the economy and the changing gardening scene just got the best of them. They are good people and I hope they land on their feet.

I stopped by Wells Medina on my way home, but I managed to resist any further spending. Place looks good with a nice selection of shrubs and new bare root trees available. A good selection of bare root fruits and berries as well. And they were offering a great selection of the new Winter Jewels hellebores from the O'Byrne's - all in full bloom.

Well from my standpoint as a vendor, it was definitely worth it, so that's good. But the sale was smaller and less attended than I think a lot of people were hoping for. I guess three vendors who were expected didn't make it because of the weather. That's too bad about Northwest Perennials; they had some cool stuff over the years. I still have Dudleya cymosa from them. Gardengal, I hope you enjoy the Eucryphia, and are you kidding me? you definitely need more plants.

I was at the sale - my first time at that particular one. I was happy with the selection of plants although the number of vendors was small. Quality looked pretty good though! I picked up half a dozen things - including three Arisaema consang., both pink and white forms of Begonia grandis, Cardamine trifolia, Narcissus bulbocodium and several items so new to me I can't even remember their names although I looked them up last night! I'm already looking forward to upcoming sales...
