"I've attempted to grow Fremontedendron californicum 3 times without success. I love this plant and have seen it in my area of San Diego growing with great gusto. Hints anyone?"

Marcy: I'm growing a flannel bush in the Rancho Penasquitos area of San Diego in very clay-ey soil. I planted it 4-5 years and have not watered it since the first year. It's grown slowly but appears to be very healthy. The only reasons I can surmise for its success are: 1) I dug a very deep hole before planting it. 2) It is on the edge of a steep slope, so I suppose what water does gather there moves away quickly. Here is a photo of this year's bloom.

I have a flannel bush in the Pacific Northwest. It is about 7 yrs old. Planted on a dry sandy slope with Douglas Fir on the north side and east. Seems to be thriving. Blooms all summer. Love a plant I never have to water.

Remarkable that it tolerates the rain in the Pacific Northwest, but I guess they grow in England, too. Mine had a double bloom this year, once in March, and again in June. We'll see how it fares with this very rare 1..5 inches of rain we just got in San Diego from Tropical Storm Delores.
