Chrysler Imperial any good on own Roots?

I recently started several cuttings of Hybrid Tea Chrysler Imperial. I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time as I'm not certain it does well on it's own roots. Does it? Does it have the same vigar as a grafted plant? Anybody have both to compair plants? Thanks, Dan

Mine were planted years ago and have sunk into the ground and are now own root. They do very well. For a time , the only HT that Antique Rose Emporium sold was Chrysler Imperial on ownroot. They do very well here. Truly a great rose in my opinion.To be honest, none of the roses grafted on Doc Huey have done better than ownroot here. Multiflora may be different and any rose grafted or budded to Fortuniana really stands out growth wise.Just my observations.

Funny you should ask. :P CI is one of hte only HTs I've kept. Love him.

Couple years ago I was dead heading the lazy way (snapping) and broke off a cane of CI. Feeling rather guilty and stupid I stuck it in the ground next to him. It survived. It is currently doing nearly as well as its grafted parent. It blooms about as much. Stays a bit shorter but that's only because my winter kills them both to the ground each year.

Its probably worht a try on its own roots in a warm zone.

Ok, Thank You all for helping me. I just went ot help me find to check out Climbing CI only to realize I have an impostor! I think... I tried to take a picture of this octopus like rose. I have over 200 roses and this rose is not a good example but I like it because it is covered with blooms. Right now it is fading away, kind of like a red Persian Yellow complete with black spot. But when she starts to bloom she looks like a chandelier and the blooms are full and deep red. According to all you have told me this is not how CI should look. Any suggestion on which rose this is???

DOUBLE DELIGHT would be a good choice. If you really want to gild the rose you could also plant POPE JOHN PAUL II. Position the three roses two feet apart in a triangle configuration and then ring the island with English lavender. HIDCOTE BLUE. is a variety of English Lavender particularly suited as a border plant. It is compact and dense with the deepest navy blue flowers that I've ever seen on an lavender plant. My grafted Chrysler Imperial was never a strong, vigorous rose, although it did put out beautiful blooms--with long waits between blooming periods. And I don't remember it ever getting over 2.5 to 3 ft tall. After two years, I got tired of always WAITING for it to bloom, to grow, to do anything! So I spaded it--and planted Oklahoma instead. I'm now having some similar problems with Oklahoma, though it is a bit more floriferous. Maybe there is something about these old classics that just doesn't like our middle of the country conditions? I don't know, but I wouldn't think own-root would help since roses tend to be even less vigorous if they are not grafted. One possibility. Did you plant the graft an inch or more below the soil line? This past winter did a number on several of my roses, even though I usually plant the graft below the soil-line. If your graft was above the line, such a brutal winter would be hard on many roses. It occurs to me that maybe it would be worth your time to see if you can find CI grafted on multiflora (like Palatine uses). Multiflora makes an even more vigorous rootstock than does Dr. Huey. Ceterum, I've spoken to him on the phone; actually was going to order Chrysler Imperial from him 2 years ago but talked myself out of it. He seems very honest, even emphasizing that this all his efforts, he's had one or two roses that had tested as RMV-free that later showed signs of the virus, so he replaced the stock again. Irish Rose Grower, you comment is encouraging. I already know I've been very pleased with RU's roses in the past. I was just wondering about this one. I vaguely recall someone on this forum a few years back complaining that his CI from RU was not clean. RU has 2 other roses I'm after, so maybe I'll order another rose from them AND CI from Appalachan Rose; not that I have extra space. :/ Mike

I bought a virus indexed own root CI last fall and although it's still very small (10" pot) it's already sent up 2 true basils (ie: from the soil, not from a cane). A friend of mine grew CI own root and swears it did fine and even better when she finally planted it in the ground. I wasn't so sure since CI isn't the most vigorous rose even with the grafted rootstock to give it extra oomph. The only thing I would be cautious of is finding an own root CI that's not RMV infected. A cutting from an infected rose, even if it's touted as own root, would still have issues.
