Once I Started Digging, It Was Hard To Quit
Comments (25)Tea Clipper is going this week. It's in a prime spot and I have 6 new roses of which Apricot Nectar will probably be its replacement. Adolf Horstmann went bye bye a couple of weeks ago and this week Scentimantal will be dug up and given away. Also going is Catherine Mermet, very small and boring. She was my first Tea and I have newer teas that are 3 times her size. Also under sp consideration, Julia Child. It was a 1.5 grade and probably has too much shade. I may move her to Adolf's vacated spot. That would put her next to Pat Austin which would be a nice color combo. I have no problem with the shovel. It's an opportunity to plant something new and hopefully it will be way better. A garden is a changing thing and sometimes we just have to go for it....See MoreWilliam Shakespeare 2000
Comments (38)Here's another picture of my W.S. 2000, own-root, it's really tiny in 2nd year, only 1' x 1', like a mini-rose. It smells like violet-old-garden-rose, just like what David Austin catalog describes. You can see its foliage better in this picture ... the petals are organized differently than poms-poms red L.D. Braithwaite. I look at Twinkletoad's pic. in the pot again, the growth habit and foliage is different from my William Shakespeare. Due to winter-die back to the crown in my zone 5a, the new growth of W.S. 2000 is perfectly round, like a globe ... no side-way cane, no octopus cane whatsoever. When I got W.S. 2000 as an own-root from High-Country Roses, I marveled at the perfect round shape of the bush, very much like the one in the pot in David Austin's catalog. Comments (4)Thanks everyone, I was suspecting that it didn't matter if WB was deadheaded or not. This is my WBs third season and I don't remember how much repeat it had last year. I finally got around to deadheading my other roses this morning and I was wondering if I should do WB also. The reason I asked is because I was at the ARS summer rose show last year and the lady giving the presentation said she used a hedge clippers to deadhead hers. So, I figured if she went to the trouble it might help. I have two planted on both sides of an arbor and I can't wait for them to get so large that I need a ladder to deadhead them....See Moremichaelg
