My Poor Pecan Trees

During the warm spell we've had the back door open and a few nights we've heard the bucks sparing under one of the Shumard Oaks about a 100 feet away and could just make out their shapes in the moonlight.

Have quite a few young native pecan trees in the yard. About 10 of them look about like this one.

I love having deer come to the yard in the winter for the acorns, but really look forward to the rut being over soon while I still have a few young trees left.

These are frames pulled off my cam corder from winters past. If I were a deer hunter, it certainly wouldn't be too hard to put venison in the freezer. I enjoy shooing them in this fashion though.

Have you tried an electric fence?

Not around the entire property. Just the trees you want to protect.

Set you up a solar fence charger. Put temporary stakes around the trees during the rut. Connect them all up through old water hose laid out on the ground.

I have found the electric 'tapes' to be most effective.

Hi,

The trees are spread out over a few acres, so that might be something not worthwhile to try. I might put some chicken wire around the trunks if they get worse.

Probably just monitor the situation and hope for the best. The squirrels and I can always start more. :-)

Have a few mulberry about the same size they haven't touched. But a small Black Pine about 3 foot tall has had the top destroyed in it. Seems a rather small subject for such aggression. :-)

Reminds me of a 16 year old male with a new drivers licenses and a fresh set of wheels.

In the past I baited traps with nuts and covered multiple traps with large cement mixing trays that I moved around my nursery through Nov. into Dec. , but this year a skunk kept taking the bait so I got tamper resistant poison bait stations, but the skunk still took poison out of the stations somehow so I had to trap and kill the skunk even though the poison would probably have done the job (bait is intentionally slow acting so anecdote can treat accidental poisoning). The pine voles will come up for the bait or poison if timed right, from my experience. 012 was a tough year... for me and all the wildlife searching for any available food.

Thanks, fruitnut. Ideally, I might have gotten the trees in the fall and planted them right away, and if I had known we'd have so much rain this spring I might have planted them this spring (although the late freezes would have been hard on them.) I also bought 2 pecan trees last year. I planted one and potted the other to plant later (in the fall.) The one that I kept in a pot for the extra year looks so much better now than the one that I planted directly. It had seemed to me that getting a really good, big root system built up before planting was really helpful for withstanding summer drought stress. And that was all that much more a consideration for me this time, because I want to plant these two trees where I won't very well be able to water them. You may be right about the pots being too wet. Maybe I should cut even more drainage holes in that one pot. I don't suppose it will hurt, and I haven't got much to lose at this point. I had planned to plant out both these trees this fall, by the way, as soon as the ground softens up again with whatever early fall rains we (hopefully) get. Thanks again!

We have had a dry summer (even for Albuquerque!)so perhaps it is responding as you say: depending on the water available: dry season ... small leaves? Lawn watering each week has been the same for the side roots though less rainfall but I'd expect the deep tap roots I was told pecans have would after 30 + years to go down to the water table by now? Hopefully uf we get a regular rainfall later the tree will put out more & bigger leaves next year. Woukls sure hate to lose that pretty shade tree!

Yeah, if they are spread out that much, it probably isn't worthwhile. It could be done, but it would be a pain.

My favorite squirrel Stubby is always planting trees in my garden. I don't mind though. The dogs and I have known him since he was a baby. I rescued him from a cat and nursed back to health (sans 50% of his tail) and he pretty much lives with me. Not in the house of course, but he has his own feeder and water supply. And boy does he defend it! He has recently invited a girl home with him and I hope to see some babies before I leave here.

Grand-squirrels?

I wonder why deer don't mess with the Mulberries? Never once in my life have I ever seen 'em destroy a Mulberry. I've had them eat my tomatoes, peas, corn, even munched down a fine row of okra once. They destroyed an entire row of pines I planted as a windbreak for some folks. But never once a mulberry.

Must be something in it they don't like. Might be a market for mulberry deer repellent out there.
