Here in the Pacific Northwest the Thuja plicata hits up to 60 metres tall - that's almost 200 feet! Give them lots of room. Their roots also like drain tile so site them accordingly.

Thank you for using a photo of one of my projects! I used a bosque of multi-stemmed River Birch adjacent to a swimming pool in the Hudson Valley. It helped the landscape transition from the cultivated garden closer to the house, to the native woods beyond. In the northeast, Betula nigra/River Birch, has become the default replacement for Betula papyrifera/Paper Birch because of the severe pest problems that have made Paper Birch next to impossible to grow. There is one important difference: The bark of the River Birch is not as bright white as the Paper Birch. It is closer to a salmon/off-white color than paper white. Still the River Birch is a fine specimen on its own, or planted in drifts, it makes a beautiful natural grove to walk through or simply admire from a distance.

I know this is an old story, but I'm trying to find trees that will thrive and soak up excess water in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia where the soil is 50% broken shale with 50% clay.

An underground stream oozes to the surface on the lower end of our property, collects around a mature Willow then drains into the neighbors basement.

It's not a neighborly situation and I'd rather resolve the issue with vegetation than build a water tight wall/fence.

My specific question is, will the Paw Paw and/ or the Common Persimmon thrive in our shale/clay mix. Amending the soil requires a jackhammer to dig holes, and we already broke one putting in fence posts for a dog run.
