Castille soap, Neem or Alcohol for Mites?

I've read all of these will work, some suggest using both alcohol and Neem together for a double whammy.

I had/have an infestation on Junipers I first treated with Neem then later went to jets of water, then ladybugs and lacewings. The mites just moved to infest Nandina and Portugeuse Laurel. What to do?

Will using Castille, Neem or Alcohol kill beneficials that may then cause mite population to explode? I need some real help here. Thanks.

at some point.. if you want to succeed.. you might have to forego the organics.. and declare war ... and go chemical ... as in using a mitecide ....

be very careful about whatever you spray.. in the HEAT OF SUMMER...

something that will suffocate a bug in spring.. might darn well suffocate a plant in july/august...

I dislike miticides.......and if used properly there is no reason you cannot use a summer weight, ultra-refined hort oil. Just read the label for directions about heat and direct sunlight. I have found oils to be the best product against heavy mite infestations. Do not confuse it with dormant oil spray. Oils can cause some foliar damage if used improperly and make sure the plant you use it on is listed on the label. The oil must contact the pest you target directly, so that means there is no nasty residual to kill beneficials who are not directly spray

Al......of course I do not recognize and would have no reason to care to much about earned titles. I have seen and been with the best and the worse Master Gardeners. If you name a hundred of any like title I would be able to say the same thing about them. I am a ROADS SCHOLLAR. I love to talk one or two on one standing knee deep in poison ivy. Going down the roads I still play "How To Tapes" on the way many times to meet someone else who will either teach me something or learn something for the time envested. We have been "HOW TO" teachers owning a school to teach true Antique Doll Restoration. We have done the whole national media trip. I personally still like it best knee deep in poison ivy to make a point. Now my wheels of life are starting down the last road. I may be able to enjoy the helping part of this site for some years. My hands no longer fit the hoe handle. I was one of the first in the country to begin using aerobic compost tea from proven tested base materials. For at least ten years now I have a standing offer to anyone and specifically the County Agents office and the Master Gardeners. It goes like this. The learning is relatively simple. I will give you hands on training in my back yard one on one or class you set up for your friends free. It will take one evening and one three hour following evening attendance with camera and note books. Coffee will be provided. To date no County Office interest, no Master Gardener Interest, no local garden club interest. Now is not that a pretty good status of the day report? On the subject of the Worst Master Gardeners meaning ones who may not have been in the "A Row" in class. My opinion is that just presenting a slide show with very simple subject matter looks good to entry level gardeners. The Master Gardeners courses that I have attended were not open to discussion or question. All materials originated at Penn State University. It was in one of those courses I learned that Comfrey was a horrible weed and should not be used. My Comfrey is grown in a K-Mart huge plastic containment planter. Makes enough for a whole year of Comfrey Tea on my property. I would offer that knowledge as a bonus to anyone interested in what has been happening here for over thirty five years. We are 98% organic here. We lie about the other 2% Our patch is now down to patio pots. They are in keeping with my opening statement in this paragraph.

I have grown Crassula ovata for the past 20 years recently. Take them out of the pots and examine the mix and roots. Cactus mix is not good for Succulents or Cactus. It holds too much water, and I am going to repeat my self, Succulents are from Africa, they grow on rocky outcrops, they do not like water, unless it drains fast. How much white stuff is in your mix? any rocks, if not put some stream rocks into the mix. "Jade" grow by the thousands on Rocky Hills sides, so the rain goes down rapidly through the rocks, they grow into the cracks. They do not get the care that you are giving them. In the summer they lose leaves, they don't like the heat they are winter growers. I have a wonder full book from Charles Glass and if you don't know who he is your are a beginner. Fianl words from his book. It's just plain common sense. "There is an illusiion of comfort in rules such as 'Water when dry" (what is dry?") 'Full sun" CA sun or New York Sun. African Sun'" Water ever two week, in CA we must water once a week. We have low humidity except this week. here are no rules concerning good culture which may not and and occasionally whould not be broken; there are principles and guide-lines which when followed with interest, Common Sense is the most important factor in growing plants." CActi and Succulents for the Amateur. Jade leaves are not supposed to crack, the plants are not supposed to ooze. I use Saffer's Soap, which is nothing but soapy water, and not detergent, with maybe some alcohol added. You can wash off the spider mites, if you water on a regular schedule, and get rid or soil mealies. When was the last time you changed the soil, perhaps the roots need to be cut back 1/3 and theh plant topped 1/3 not now but the first of October, just remember rules are just guide lines and use them as such. How large are your Jades ? When is the last time they were trimmed, soil changed? Does your hair fall out. So do their leaves, are they getting good air circulation? Are they getting cool nights and plenty of air circulation. I wash mine down once a week because it makes sense to me. I follow how the Huntington Gardens takes care of their plants, it workds for them and it has always worked for me since I was a child. We use no pesticides for the 100,000 plants that we have documentated growing in one green house and outside on benches with no heat. The proof in in the plants. The above suggestions are excellent I would listen if I were you. All of us have tricks in growing. Good luck, love your plants and they will love you. Candice, I have used Neem OIl (Neem, water, drops of Blue Dawn dish soap. Castille soap good if you can get it) with no ill effects to the leaves. If you spray w the mix, make sure and rinse it off though before sunlight hits the leaves. I rinse mine after a few hours. These are contact sprays and pests need to be coated for it to work. If they have damaged leaves already, the leaves damaged will turn off color and this is not necessarily from the Neem Oil. Not had to deal w Mealy bugs and I hope not to. Cannot comment. With Spider Mites. I have used Predatory Mites and they worked very well for me. I used the P. persimilis and N. fallasis. The N. fallasis is best, as it will live in the soil, eats other than mites and lives in the soil to assist possibly in the next growing season. Rick

Okay, can you recommend a good oil calliope? I too am reluctant to use chemical warfare as I know if I kill off the beneficials I may have an even bigger problem later; but may use it as a last resort - just have to decide when the last resort has arrived.

I had planned to spray tomorrow with a one gallon mixture of water and isopropyl alcohol 2:1 ratio plus about 3-4 Tbs of Castille soap. Repeating the spray every 5 days for 3 total sprays then introduce phytoseiulus persimillis or Western pedator spider mites. What do you think guys and gals?

Alcohol sprayed on plants to control insect pests may do more damage to the plants then the insects you are trying to control. Unless the label on the Neem Oil products requires something adding anything may violate federal law about the use of that product and also render that product ineffective.
Any insecticide can kill off beneficials as well as the pests since few of them are so selective that they can distinguish between the good and the bad. So judicious use of any pesticide is necessary, whether that is an Insecticidal Soap or Carbaryl.
What to use, if anything is necessary, depends on what you have. Insects require insecticides, if populations are not controlled by other means, Mites need miticides, not pesticides, for control and there is a difference. So proper identification of the problem is necessary to know what to use, but starting with the least toxic material available is usually the best method of control.

I do believe Safer makes a summer-weight ultra refined hort oil......I can't tell you the brand I used to use in the g'houses because it would have been marketed only to professional growers. That's one reason I like oils..........it's a suffocant and it kills in all stage of growth and that includes arachnids like mites as well as any other pest who 'breathes' and that's all of them.

Yes, I've heard good things about Safer products. I have been using the 1:1 ratio of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol and Water with Castille Soap, no adverse effects on plants and it has worked to reduce the numbers. I have now employed predator mites so hope to be rid of this problem while retaining beneficials.
