Definately can't afford milky spore...any other options?

I have two acres of lawns/gardens that are under attack by japanese beetles. I was very happy to hear about milky spore, but when I went to buy it I realized it would cost me well over $400 to treat my yard. Plus, the thought of trying to apply it to such a large area sounds impossible. Are there any other options that are nearly as effective? If I use milky spore is it necessary to do the entire yard or could I just do the areas nearest the plants that are most heavily attacked? I doesn't seem that my perinneals are neary as covered with beetles as my shrubs, bushes and ornamental trees are. Most of them are closer to the house where it is sunnier. Thanks in advance.
