Given the deer problem, you might try a standard privet hedge. It is deciduous and will therefore give you the privacy you want in summer. And the thicket of branches will also afford decent privacy in winter. If the deer nibble now and then, it should not be a big deal because these hedges require pruning and thinning from time to time to maintain good health anyway.

If space is not a consideration, forsythia hedge planted in full sun and allowed to grow naturally should work pretty well in your situation. For the multi-season interest, "Sweet Autumn' clematis could be introduced in between every 4th or 5th shrub.

I agree with Rockman, a deciduous plant often works as well as an evergreen for privacy and they're usually much more rapid growers.

If you want a few hundred privet, they crop up all over my yard. No kidding, on my 1/3 acre lot, there must be 300 privet seedlings at any given moment. I don't remember seeing privet on the invasives list, but I'd have to say they're one of the worst offenders here on Cape Cod; I spend a lot of time pulling and digging them. Of course, in CT you might not have that problem.

They sure are fast growing, reliable, and inexpensive (as in I'd pay you to to come pull them up). Also, they have lovely fall coloring - not bright red, but deep mysterious purple-green. And, the birds obviously love the seeds and the cover they provide.

I have a Lindera benzoin (spice bush) that reached its 6' size very quickly from a rooted twig; they are native, have fragrant foliage (so are probably deer resistant) and have tiny yellow flowers in March.

Birds, including American Robin, Northern Bobwhite, Gray Catbird, Eastern Kingbird, and Great Crested Flycatcher, eat the drupes.

A row of native bayberry might be really nice, too; large swaths of them were recently planted on the campus where I work, and they've reached 6' quickly, forming beautiful banks of nearly evergreen foliage. I've got some in my garden that are a bit of a pest because they're sited too close to perennials - they spread, which might be good for your situation.

I envy you the space you have, but not the deer problem.

When you say "field" and "country road" I am thinking that you may want to look around your area and take note of what natives might be happy. Be careful to note plants that border your field and consider the transition between your proposed planting and the surrounding area. Perhaps colonies (groups of the same plant) of different locally native shrubs (how many would depend on the square footage)might fit the bill. kt

What I said about privet goes triple for Sweet Autumn Clematis. I bought one from White Flower Farm and later that season noticed them all over the untended areas of town. Now they are in my lawn, and in almost every garden area in my yard. We've been classified as zone 7, so, again, you may not have this problem at all; and SAC is *lovely* when in bloom, which happens to be when few other things are blooming, and it seems to be pest-free.

If you want the hedge all of one type of plant, untrimmed forsythia is dense enough, even without leaves, to provide privacy, and as far as I know isn't particularly attractive to deer. It's stunning for two weeks of the year (I know it isn't fashionable to love that screaming yellow, but I do) and plain green the rest of the year, though some varieties have nice purple and yellow fall foliage. It is not of the tidy habit that Thuja is, however; more of a perpetual wild hair day. It provides good cover for birds if that is of interest to you.

You don't mention how much room you have available, but with enough space you could also do a mixed hedge with faster growing plants staggered with slower growing ones, so that you eventually have an evergreen row of something like spruces and/or pines with faster growing plants that provide cover until the slower plants get bigger and then provide cover lower down as the lower branches of the trees die.

Not sure how deer resistant they are (but suspect they are), but how about a row of hawthorns? Depeding on the cultivar you can have them tall or short, I suspect the thorny branches will discourage deer from eating them, and they have lovely fruit in the winter while looking nice the rest of the year. In early-mid summer they cover themselves in flowers. If you go this route I warn you to pay close attention to the cultivar you get. Make sure it smells nice in bloom because not all of them do.
