Berries, Berries, Berries....

It's now that lovely time in fall where many plants are bedecking themselves in berries - "fruit" to you botanical nitpickers. I refuse to get into which are berries, drupes, cones, hips, ...

I looked around my garden and found berries, fruit, whatever on:

Cotoneaster

Canadian Mayflower

Lily-of-the-Valley

Pokeberry

Grey Owl Juniper

Virginia Rose

Carefree Beauty Rose

Winterberry

The big old winterberry has LOTS of berries

and next to the big old winterberry is a big old osmanthus

and the big old osmanthus has.....flowers? Ah well, you can't win them all.

Anybody else have berries?

Beautiful photos Claire! I did something similar to what you did. I walked down the road and took photos of all the berries I found. I put up a gallery and some of us identified them.

Evonnestoryteller: Nice tour there - I managed to identify some of the easy ones, but most of them are way out of my knowledge. If I planted it, or found it in my yard, I usually know what it is. Outside the yard is a whole new world.

icb_47933, I may be able to collect some of the dogwood berries for you. They have fallen here, but I did notice a few in the woods yesterday that the creatures had not gotten to. Please see my list of wants...and I might add, that my Have list is quite dated. You would likely get more replies if you put up a list of seeds you have available to trade on your trade page here. Sorry to say I cannot help with the sassafras berries/seeds. I have many of the trees here, but just have never seen/noticed the seeds. Sue Here is a link that might be useful: My want list

Fricanod: Since you are new to gardening, the problems may lie in your basic soil preparation or watering. What kind of soil do you have, and did you add any amendments when planting? Blueberries require an acidic soil rich in organic material, but well drained. Are you mulching your plants, and how much and how often do you water? Excessive watering is a common mistake of new gardeners. Mulching helps to conserve moisture and hold down weeds. So tell us about these things. There is no reason to believe that eggplant would affect your other perennial plants. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

The jelly can be softened. I had some quite stiff blueberry and added some honey and a dash of water, then placed in the microwave about 45 seconds. Just enough to get it a little softer. Now that is done, the jelly is more like a spreadable syrup. The blues can be different sizes and once frozen will lose some of the water as ice. Keep in mind a cup of big cultivated blueberries will cook down to less than a cup, compared to a cup of small wild blueberries. Its the same with Kosher salt vs. canning salt. The bigger the particle size, the less there will be if measured in a cup. A weight would be more accurate.

Nice photos, both of you! I'm pretty much doing my berry appreciation vicariously, through my friend's garden. We just planted a couple of Winter Red ilexes, which are gorgeous already, and a viburnum. She also has a huge glorious stand of pokeberry, which I know some consider as a weed, but it is pretty.

I do have some berries on my lily-of-the-valley, but I'm quite disappointed in my viburnum Blue Muffin. It has - I should say "had" - only a handful of berries, which are now gone. Perhaps I need a pollinator?

Anyway, thanks again for sharing the photos. Sometimes we need to be reminded to appreciate things like this at this time of year!

I'm inspired by everyone's berries. I wish I had more. I have one Viburnum, plicatum I think, that doesn't have a single berry on it. though it is a gorgeous orange for fall. My serviceberry and crabapple are always so decimated by rust that I never have berries on them either. My serviceberry failures is one of my sadder failures in the garden. Does anyone have good luck with a serviceberry?

Beautiful photos! I especially like Claire's juniper berries photo. You don't always think of Juniper as a "berrying" plant...

Right now the berries on my Winterthur Viburnum nudum are starting their color transformation....

Excellent photos all. Dee, you probably do need a pollinater for the Blue Muffin, unless you have a lot of wild Viburnum dentatums around.

I went to the Cranberry Harvest Festival today (more photos of cranberries on that thread)

Many, many cranberries

Almost the first thing I saw at the Festival was three Cornus Kousas in fruit. I had to ask the staff what they were. For some reason I'm used to seeing Kousas in flower, but I've never seen the berries.

Aha! You know, I've seen the kousas in fruit too, but never knew they were kousas! Thanks, Claire!

Ellen, your viburnum is gorgeous! I'm so happy to see it, as that was what I chose to put in my friend's garden (and trust me, for me to make a decision at all, never mind a decision from amongst the seemingly thousands of viburnums that exist, was NOT an easy thing!) so I'm glad to see it is so beautiful.

Lisa, wonderful callicarpa! I'll have to check into that.

I did find some blue berries on a scraggly scrub evergreen which is growing in my yard. I'm assuming now, thanks to Claire's photos, that it is some kind of juniper. Nothing photo-worthy, though!

Dee, I am very happy with the Winterthur Viburnum so far. I have 3 of them (2 Winterthur cultivars plus a species nudum to use as a pollinator, that I got from Tripple Brook Farm) in front of a nice Japanese Maple on a hillside. I put them there as a replacement for some very old Forsythia which I didn't enjoy any more (they grew too well, they were trying to form a thicket and I hated the trimming necessary to keep them in bounds)

So far the Viburnum have all bloomed nicely in the spring and formed gorgeous berries, plus their foliage turns a really nice burnished red. Beautiful landscape shrub! HIghly recommended!
