Sleeping Hosta about to get a blanket ...

It looks like 8-10 inches of snow on the way, We do need the moisture, But I have become accustom to chilly dry days this year.. It was BOUND to happen !

Our gardens are looking forward to a nice blanket of snow! Bring it on....we are ready.

Everyone be safe while driving out in the snow.

The weatherman better be correct on this way!

I will believe it when I see it. We have been forcasted to have over 2" rain so far and have barely had 1/4" this month.
I have food and water and as long as I don't lose power, bring it on!

Guess I threw a blanket over the discussion? Last night we finally had frost. And a cache pot I sat out on the deck rail had a 1/4" of ice in the water this morning. DH said the front lawn crunched as he walked across the grass. I came out later in the morning, and the plants beneath the camellia sasanqua 10-12 foot tall shrubs, which are in full bloom at this time of year, must have protected the hosta beneath them, because they are not down and out. Even two peace lilies are still in good shape, but the pots out in the open are down. So I suppose location makes a lot of difference. The sheltering limbs must protect from cold as well as sun. This is a little early for our freeze. Or so it seems to me. It is cold again tonight, which might finish them off. I'll report back in the morning. It is due to warm up tomorrow I'm thinking.

I believe we always used a blanket when our DS was little. He was born in April and it got pretty warm but even then we used a light blanket. I've always been the type that needs a blanket to sleep. Even in the middle of the summer I will still have a sheet and the comforter on me to sleep. My Mom said I felt secure and that's why I slept better. So DS has always used blankets of some sort. Never anything huge. I can't rememeber when but at some point we started using this white blanket with the silky binding on it and that became his blankie and then he got a green one and he still carries them around and he's almost 3. ~Leslie~

Okay I am going to try and answer all the questions I have been asked. Daisy does stay in a crate during the day as my husband and I both work full time. She is not holding herself throughout the day. I don't allow her a lot of water in the morning and I take her out 2 to 3 times before I leave. She is not on a leash, none of out dogs were, but she has a designated "potty" area. When she wakes me up at night we go to teh door directly and to the potty spot. Once she is done, I tell her its time to go back to bed. She has actually improved on getting in the crate at night and not throwing a huge fit. Her Crate is in our room and its not a big one its actually the smallest wired crate I have seen but she has enough room for a small cushion to lay on and room to move around with her toys , and its in our room. The thing of trying to ignore her is a great idea but she will pee in her crate and that is what I am trying so hard to avoid. Also I have a 5 year old dog and when she throws a fit he gets restless then nobody sleeps : ) . She actually didn't wake me up until 4am today and I was so excited but then I found evidence that she potty in the crate I don't thik that was from yesterday unless my husband missed it which is possible. When she does pee in there I try to clean and wash everything in hopes she won't smell it and do it again. Is there anything to help with the odor?? any thoughts. So we are being patient and trying to do what we can, I may try the leash idea, that is a good one. Now Prairie Love you asked me about the Parvo. You all have NO idea what I have gone through. I had NO clue when I picked my precious baby out that she had Parvo. We found out the Sunday after we got her on Wed. She was so sick. I did call the humane society and to my suprise found out 2 days late that they knew on Saturday. I went straight to a board member with my concerns. Its been a huge ordeal but they are working on it and investigating and having a special session to keep this from happening again. I am very aware of how serious it is now, as all of her litter mates lost their lives due to it. Another thing I want to ask you all about. They made me have her fixed before I could take her home, yes at 8weeks of age. Would this affect anything with her. I need to ask my vet. We finally have enough of a "sample" to take in now.. whoo what a chore. Thank you all for your ideas, I love having animal lovers to talk to. Now if I can get my 5 year old to love her as much as her daddy and I do : ) !

OK, my advice is going to be a bit different than some of the others, but you have to figure out what works for you and your dog. When our dog was a pup we put her crate downstairs in the main living area. Our bedrooms are upstairs. I did this so that we would not wake up and be tempted to positively reinforce crying or whining unless it was loud enough to really mean something. I have a pug, and they have small bladders, so in the beginning I set my alarm for 2:00 am and got up to let her out to potty ONLY. No play, no cuddling, etc. Just potty, back to crate with a small treat. This method worked wonders. She only cried a bit for two nights. After that, she learned to cry only when she had to go and we were able to move the crate into DS's room at night. Now that she is trained she sleeps in DS's bed. I think if you put the crate in your room and speak to the puppy or pet him when he cries, that is still reinforcing the behavior and you are likely to have to deal with it longer. And quirkyquerces is, of course, right about making the crate Disneyland. We taught our dog the "crate" command by tossing her a treat every time she went in. Being a food-driven pug, she learned to zoom for that crate pretty quick. She still does it and it cracks up our friends. Just don't put lots of gooey treats in at night or you may find a mess in the morning. Perhaps a safe, tasty chewy of some kind, like a nylabone, to keep her occupied? Also, it sounds like your crate is a too big for a pup. They feel more secure in a smaller space and they are less likely to soil a smaller crate as well. A rule of thumb is that it should only be large enough for them to stand up, lie down and turn around fully. You can decrease the size temporarily by putting a wooden box in the back of the crate to take up some of the space. Good luck!

My hosta are sleeping well without snow, temperature down to 15 degrees. Some days it rains, so conditions for their sleep are OK. I hate to remember 5 ft tall snow mounds at the road and all that required snow blowing and scraping early in the morning before the school bus comes, my driveway is a stop for the bus. So I love the present situation of no snow in my yard, and also no -20 degrees.

It seems that after going back and forth between rain and snow and then snow and freezing rain ad nauseum ... the weather man has made up his mind today. The current blanket of white will be freshened this evening by 30 cm (12 inches) of fresh snow. As Bernd said, no -20F yet though several nights have been well below 0F. That cold stretch will come - it always does!

yes our ( my) hosta finally got their winter feather quilt and lots of it . It is barely freezing but it has snowed the last couple days and enough to keep them warmer and protected from the elements. DH has been plowing and shoveling walks and driveway for days but I guess that is what winter in Canada is all about. Days will be getting longer tomorrow which will be nice to see. Absolutely hammered us, who knows how much, but it seemed a foot deep when I got that concrete wet snow out of my drive.. It was melting from underneath the whole time so I am not sure will ever know? the highest recorded area was only 6 miles from me however...

I always wonder if there is any Lake Snow Effect off of Saylorville lake?

Not enough to cover the grass blades-I don't think it is measureable. Wind gusting to 40+, temp dropped from 50 to 26 so far, but little precip. TWC says the chanceof having any is over. You'd think I live in Alabama like moc.
I'll have to brave the wind-chill and see if it has blown my pots over.

We had approx. 5-6 inches of snow + much needed rain before it turned to snow. Gust up to 50 mph yesterday.
Nice sparkly snow now with the sun shinning today. 14*

Happy for the much needed blanket on the gardens.

2 inches of rain followed by 3 inches of slushy snow. 25 miles northwest of here got 17 inches of wet heavy snow. Next, near single digit lows. Might make my clay soil a solid block of ice for some time to come and really tax the hardiness of some plants.

Hmmm, I hear the buzz of the snow folks, and the wind folks, and we are among the windy folks. It did get down to about 30 after the high winds and silent thunderstorms. I had no idea it was coming. They did say we'd have temps down to 30, but no mention of anything else.

I was peacefully online when I heard this rain beating against the north side of the house, and then beating on the roof (shingles) so hard that it sounded like rain on a metal roof....and I began thinking how nice it will be when we get metal up there....but apparently it was just the advance bands of the storm which was a prelude to the early-morning (4:30 am) tornado which struck about 6 miles from us. It was a sunny morning when I fed the dogs and walked out on the back deck. Word was, the bands had moved out to Mobile Bay, and I was hearing this roaring like the aircraft engine test blocks when they rev up those big engines. Or, when the Fedex planes take off at the nearby long runway out across the Bay. Hmmm, and there was a loud roar coming from the tops of the swaying pine trees, which dropped needles so thick they hid the paved road in front of my house. Wow.

I checked my tipped pots of hosta, and they were half dry, half wet, Some which have yet to go dormant, but they are not as vigorous as in the summer. Let's hope it gets cold enough for LONG enough, for them to be rested and raring to go come March!

I did harvest 5 quarts of peppers, and left the tiny ones growing and the blooms on the jalapenos. If it doesn't get really freezing weather, who knows, we might get more peppers. I love those 5 or 6 red bell peppers, the banana peppers and the red and green jalapenos. Nice to have for my cornbread dressing.
