lemon tree

I would like to grow a lemon tree, am not sure which type to buy and if in fact I can grow one in the northwest that will produce. I have an olive tree in a pot which does very well so maybe there is hope. Any suggestions?

rocket..yes you can most definatrly grow a lemon tree in the NW. I live in Enumclaw Wa. and I have several Citrus tree's.I have (2) Lemons & Lime & Cara Cara Orange & Rio Red Grapefruit & Satsuma Mandarin & Honey Murcott Tangerine & a few Kumquats.I grow them in my greenhouses that I keep on the cool side.But many people grow them in theur homes here also.As long as you have a south facing window that gets several hours a day of light your good to go! And you keep the inside temperature around 65 degree's inside. For this you'll most definately want a dwarf citrus for container growing.And after a few years they produce well.I would buy a (2 to 3) year old dwarf Lemon tree. And this way you'll possibly have some fruit the following year. I buy my Citrus from Four Winds Growers in California. I have grown citrus for years. The trees stay in my unheated greenhouse/sunroom in the winter, and go outside in the summer. There is a citrus forum on Gardenweb that can be really helpful. It is not unusual for local nurseries to carry a few citrus plants. I live north, and have purchased from Bakerview in Bellingham, and Christiansons in the Skagit Valley. I have also purchased from Four Winds my mail. I currently have a minneola tangelo, an improved meyer lemon and a lime. BTW, I also am now growing a few banana trees! Citrus are so fun to grow. In fruit or flower almost all the time, they rewarding. And it is pretty great to be able to pick a lemon off your own tree when you need one.

One piece of advice: When your plants are indoors you should mist them often. Spider mites are a big problem, but they are reluctant to establish themselves on plants that get wet. If you do get an infestation, forget the pyrethrin sprays -- hose your plants off regularly.

I think they are fascinating trees--Poncirus. The first time I ever the tree was in Longwood Gardens in Pa.. They are hardy were I am but no one seems to grow them and I never see them being sold at garden centers. As I understand it, botanists classify them either as true Citrus or a very close relative. Their leaves remind me of the Kaffir lime (though the Ponciris has an additional third lobe). I As I said, I have mine containerized because I tread the thought of what I'd have to go through if I ever wanted it removed--those thorns are NASTY. Then again, I'd imagine they make for great security fences--and they're deer resistant I believe. Keep in mind though that the tree is deciduous.

The picture that Steve circled, that scion is still alive (as you can see a fruit bloom on that branch that is cut). The other picture, the scion definitely appears dead, it may even have been killed by the tape that was used to keep it on the support having cut into the bark as the scion grew. Any of the long shoots that are trifolate (three leave - like a club playing card), like is showing on the ground in the first picture and on the tree, need to be cut as Steve mentioned. For the second tree pictured, if you don't have any leaves that are not trifolate, then you're not going to get any wanted fruit, unless you want to try grafting from your other plant.

Did your trees receive adequate water this year? Were any lawn fertilizers applied near the tree? Was the tree mulched to reduce water evaporation?

Thank you, its growing out of the tree & its why I didn't remove it, flying dragon they add it so it dwarfs effect & gives the plant able to durvive in cold weather temps. I should of asked last year, I'm going to remove it now, Thank you everyone as I didn't plant it in the ground & soil is weak no nutrients & it snows here. I put the tree close to my house when it gets cold & no watering. I had a avocado that could go 12 temp, my luck we went down to 9 & lost them. It was grafted in the middle & I swear it said pinnable, orange & lemon. I would of got more lemons then one you see in Pic. I grow orchids & San marzano tomatoes from my home Italy. P.s. I removed the flying dragon great to keep pets away & burglar.

YAHOO. planning to move from So. Cal. to bellingham, wa. We have 3 orange trees, lemons, limes, grapefruit, peach, and plum trees---didn't sound like you could grow them in bellingham---I now have hope!! I currently, have about 100 plants in pots--may be a litttlllle hard to move all of them. THANK YOU
