Planting Oriental Lily bulbs now in my Southern Cali garden?
Comments (2)I think it would be fine to wait to plant them. January is not all that far off anyway, even if planted in late Jan. I'd just try to watch and keep the Stargazers from drying out too much before planting. You might try keeping them stored in some slightly dampened peat, or potting mix. Happy Planting. Comments (10)hi, Susan, Plunging ahead is exactly right. My only casualty was the tea rose, Devoniensis, which I cut back after the top died. It is now coming back from the roots for the second time - it "died" once before a couple of years ago. Gotta love that rose, even if it may never get more than 8 inches high. I may dig it up and put it into a pot in the greenhouse. I think it would be happier there. Did I tell you I got a greenhouse! Just a little one, but boy, it's great having a warm spot. The dianthus and cornflower seeds you sent I wintersowed and they're going gangbusters! Thank you for them. :) Gean This post was edited by harborrose on Thu, Apr 3, 14 at 11:10...See More**Damaging insects on my peppers right now(yes, now in December)
Comments (17)Define 'large infestation' ;-) Do you mean where the buds and the leaves are literally obscured by and dripping with aphids? If so, I've had infestations like that, and Ladybugs took care of the problem without flinching. Generally, folks don't overwinter a great number of plants, and so the problem is usually much more manageable. If Ladybugs are an option in your area, I really feel they are the best option. Just spray off the plants to mechanically remove the excess aphids, and then loose the Ladybugs. In my experience, one Ladybug will clear a medium-sized plant. When I overwintered more plants, I would simply move the Ladybugs from one plant to another. The Ladybug larva are even more adept and voracious at aphid control. When the Ladybugs have done their work, I move them to my Hoyas, which are even greater aphid magnets. Josh...See Morenothing but problems right now in my garden
