Driving down the entire Eastern shore as I have several times, one is struck by the "Lagerstroemia gradient" haha. The fact huge tree-like ones are rare up around the canal (though not non-existant) but by the time you're in Cape Charles, very common. Well on the Cape and around the Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach, there are so many old crape myrtles it's obvious they are pretty impervious to all of the hurricanes and major thunderstorms that pass through the area. (BTW this is with the old standard pink clone. The new National Arboretum clones really are zn 6 hardy and will eventually mean this gradient is no longer as noticeable. I've seen when I was driving around Lancaster County that I saw a few old standard ones that were killed back by -5-0F temps this winter, but the new cultivars remained arborescent even up there. As to be expected though, they are more commonly seen in newer suburban tract housing landscapes and not in the older sections of towns like Gap, Parkesburg, etc.)

I'm late to the game, but wanted to share an idea we're doing this year. We're starting some local, neighborhood-run produce markets. They're technically grey-market - someone will turn a garage or shed into a produce stand. Anyone can drop produce by, and they list inventory on a whiteboard. Payments are handled through Venmo, so shoppers pay growers directly through a mobile app. It's a grassroots thing meant for neighborhoods, but I think if you had a handful of these going in town, a professional growers could drop off a steady supply of produce to each one. The folks who host it get to keep any produce unsold after a couple of days, so there are definite benefits for them. I'm late getting back to this. I missed the Portland Hardy plant sale but did make the SNACC plant sale and came home with some natives. I've been lurking, in the rain, over at Portland Nursery's clearance section. Some very nice finds there for 50% off. I'm in Vancouver WA and find my best deals at Tsugawa Nursery (Woodland), and then Garden Fever and Portland Nursery (Portland). Shorty's and Yard n Garden (Vancouver)seem to be overpriced most of the time. Plus they just don't have the variety. I've amassed quite a few plants and had hoped for a longer fall season to plant in. I think I'll be planting in the rain the next week. For rose lovers our Ft. Vancouver Rose Society used to have some really good sales at their meetings. One could pick up some unusual roses there. I don't know if they still do that.
