Crape/Crepe Myrtle : Deepest red flower?
Comments (78)Anybody know about Burgundy Cotton? How well they bloom? Fall color? I'm trying to figure out a good color combination for my backyard. I'm thinking of a row of light pink with a row of dark purple in front of that. So I'm thinking of the Burgundy Cotton in the back with Zuni or Catawba in the front. I know that Burgundy Cotton is said to have white flowers, but I've seen it in person and it's more of a very light pink, which I think would look nice with the purple. I did a combo of red and pink in the front (dynamite and Sioux) so I'm trying to do a different color combo in the back. Fall color is important to me. Thanks in advance for your advice....See MoreTell Me about These Crape Myrtles, Please!
Comments (20)@agardenstateof_mind I completely agree with you on the ubiquity of crepe myrtles. They're all over my state too. Unfortunately after researching for months, I've found no other tree that flowers as long, and can also handle all day zone 9b full sun. In Sacramento, from late April to early Oct, almost every day is over 90 degrees-and as high as 114-with no rain. All other trees I've considered flower a month at best. However, I'm totally open to any suggestions you have! I would love to have a spectacular specimen tree! I'm going to try to plant a Venus Dogwood and a Oxydendrum arboreum sourwood, though they'll likely get burned to crisps....See MoreCrape Myrtle question
Comments (21)I've read that propagation from root suckers is best done in the spring but in my stubborness I cut 3 suckers (white) yesterday, potted them and am keeping them moist in the greenhouse. Plesantly surprized this morning while working in the greenhouse to find 2 of the 3 sucker plantings finally showing new growth! Took 6 weeks. Still high and dry in MWC with our first frost of the season Wednesday morning. I didn't cover up the night before because the wind was so strong the covers would have probably blown to Texas by morning. I got lucky with only so slight frost burn on a couple of tomatoes and the squash. That afternoon a couple of the Superfantastic even had multiple blooms. Looks like I'll make it to next Wednesday (by the forecast)then harvest the green beans and squash for Thanksgiving. Probably a couple hundred of green tomatoes and several peppers. All and all with the fall planting and rejuvination of the tomatoes, I had a decent year despite all of the setbacks. Keith...See MoreCrape Myrtles...
