Re The tree is gone, now what?

Sorry to start a new thread, but the original thread is "broken".

mmegaera, you could build a primitive shade structure over the planting bed. Use some plastic pipe or 2x4s, and throw some shade cloth over it. It only has to last a month or two, so it doesn't have to be fancy. You could use the fence as part of the frame.

Just like Ron said. Move em' before they fry. They are going into a shdy spot, right? Move em' and water them well. Most plants move easier than most imagine. Just do it right....and soon.

if you are realy worried about transplanting in the heat but it Must be moved, you can pot the things up as tenderly and carefully and quickly as you can, then put them in a sort of holding area till the cooler weather comes, or till the plants recover from being moved. I would set them in dappled shade, or morning sun,. in saucers, or grouped in shallow tubs, I have those black plastic cement mixing trays on hand for this type of thing, or even a very shallow kiddy pool will work, or you can knock together a sort of tray by making a square of 2x4's lined with plastic, then you can give the stuff a good drink easily for a few days, Not setting in water, but easy to water all at once. this will buy you some time to think what to do next.

Wow! Thank you so much. Dawsoniana & Bennett are definite contenders. (I have yews on either end of the strip in the photo. I have considered (and not ruled out) a rhododendron, too. Any of the above would leave a lot of room for hosta for quite a long time. Have a feeling that this is a project that isn't going to happen this summer. After seeing the pix you posted, Steve, the area has a lot of potential. I need to think it over instead of making another mistake like I made with the junipers. Morning sun, deer resistant hosta suggestions? We generally get enough rain that I don't have to supplement a whole lot and I'm willing to baby them along until they're established. No reason not to start collecting some of the hosta now. (I'm always moving them around anyway!)

Stanlie, these people are power-crazy and do not want people (G-d forbid) to make a tree or shrub decision by themselves. Only the MANAGEMENT and BOARD know what trees and shrubs we should have. Judging from the extreme overuse of purple ornamental plum trees, trees planted by the curb way too close (resulting in stunting of the shorter species), etc., I have little confidence in the knowledge of the "landscape company" or their "landscape workers". No, they would not allow me to plant a large shrub or small tree. As a matter of face, I recall my neighbor Tom last year telling me quite indignantly that the "landscape workers" removed a Rose of Sharon his wife had planted 5 years earlier, because "it was too close to the building". They didn't even tell him or give him an opportunity to move it. They just snatched it out of the ground, and a rose bush, too.

In fact, many maple trees have shallow root systems that are considered to be highly invasive. Their root systems are particularly aggressive, and go straight for moisture and nutrients (as in, your garden bed if you have one). They usually out-compete anything else there, including other trees. You might consider some kind of root barrier, but that probably won't be a perfect solution. I'd do some research on maple roots. Maples are wonderful, but not with much else.
