Winter storm warning Thurs p.m. for S & SE OK

Some counties in southeastern and southern OK have had their Winter Weather Advisory replaced by a Winter Storm Warning due to heavier than expected snowfall, while other counties still have a Winter Weather Advisory.

Snow is falling at a heavy rate over many parts of southern OK and the snowfall is expected to continue another 6 or 8 hours.

You can check the watch/warning map at the bottom of the page linked below.

(Here at our house we are up to 6" of snow and it is still falling.)

It was supposed to stay mostly south of us! All the meteorologists are scratching their heads and trying to explain why it tracked more north than expected. And, there's lots of disappointed folks in Houston and New Orleans who hoped for snow and are getting rain.

At 3 p.m. we began experiencing thundersnow. I kind of like thundersnow.

The snow is pretty to look at but I hope it melts fast. : )

Do y'all really think it will happen? I'm certainly not convinced we'll get much snow or that it will stick around. It it snows, that's fine--I'll be inside starting seeds. If it doesn't snow, that's fine too--I'll still be inside starting seeds. So, it is likely it won't affect me much either way. I've been watching the models for this storm for 8-10 days now and they'll been all over the place. The storm models that are fairly reliable this far out show the storm trying to take a more southerly path than they were showing a few days ago. Currently, there are snow-related watches and advisories across several southern states that don't see much snow, including some parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and even a bit of Georgia. The Thursday-Friday snow will be nothing compared to today's Nor'easter that has had low enough pressure that it is essentially the equivalent of a Cat. 1 hurricane if not worse. (After last night's and today's snowfall, several major Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern cities have set all-time high annual snowfall records for the winter of 2009-2010, although the records generally only go back to about 1880.) But, for southern areas that rarely see snow, the Thurs.-Fri. storm could be a big deal. I don't particularly want snow. I was sort of hoping it would miss us since we are still so wet and muddy that the ground 'squishes' when you walk. Well, it doesn't squish early in the morning when I go out to feed/water the animals because it is frozen, but it squishes as it thaws. It is time for some sunlight, heat and warmth so that the ground will dry out enough for planting. It's planting time! Suzie, It is a sad story about the firefighter. They haven't released a lot of details, but I think he was involved in a fire truck burnover, which is when a wind-driven wildfire overtakes a firetruck and literally burns right over it/through it/around it. My husband and our Asst. Chief survived one of those a couple of years ago and it happened while I was watching. The only "good" thing about it was that the fire moved so fast that by the time it registered in my brain that fire had overtaken his truck, he'd driven out of the fire safely and the fire was running towards the interstate and he turned and 'chased' it from behind. I hope to never see anything like that again. The big fire west of Fort Worth is near Possum Kingdom Lake in very rough and rugged terrain. The last I heard, about 30 homes there had burned and over 200 more were at risk and had been evacuated. Possum Kingdom State Park had been closed, and some roads were closed. There's also a huge complex of fires in the Wichita Falls area that involves at least 3 separate very large, major wildfires. Homes have burned there and evacuations have occurred. Some Love County firefighters are in the county next to Wichita Falls helping fight a different fire complex near Henrietta, TX. Before today's fires, Texas had had about a half-million acres burn just in the last 7 or 8 days. There's no telling what that number will be after they total up all the acreage today. Our VFD only had two brief fire calls today so I consider us very fortuante indeed because it could have been so much worse. Our county's burn ban expires next week and I hope the commissioners renew it (though I don't think they will because burn bans are very unpopular with some of their constituents). Carol, Our mesonet station goes out every time the wind gusts over 20 mph. It is out even when no one else's stations are malfunctioning. It drives me up the wall. Our wind was like a ocean today....choppy and full of big waves interspersed with periods of calm. As sundown approached, it seemed to calm down a lot...then began gusting really hard again. It can't seem to make up its mind what to do. The little wildlife puddle in our driveway had little choppy whitecaps. The birds bathed in it anyway. There was a big wreck on I35 in Gainesville this afternoon caused by the wind blowing tractor-trailer trucks around. Gainesville's highest recorded gust was 53 and ours was 54. Our weather is very similar to theirs, so when the Burneyville mesonet station malfunctions, I just check the station at the Gainesville Airport. I'm watching the 10 p.m. newscast and Steve LaNore just said we'll have near-record lows here tonight. Oh good, just what we needed. Also, he said the wind returns Sunday, so I'll try to get a lot done tomorrow in case Sunday's weather is yucky. Dawn

Carol, The Grove Airport's number is always so much higher than the ones from the National Weather Service or the OK Mesonet. It always confuses me when I see abnormally high HIs that don't correlate to the ones from government agencies but I think y'all just have a really, really humid pocket of air there around the lake and your heat index really is that high even if no one else's is. On our Channel 12 evening news, Steve LaNore reported the HI at Paul's Valley as 116, and I've never particularly thought of Paul's Valley as a real humid place. Today, though, they clearly were. We're always so hot and dry here, as opposed to hot and humid, that our heat index rarely exceeds 105. Today it reached at least 107 and you could feel it. I can't even imagine what 115 or 120 or 125 would feel like. Your dewpoint, by the way, is utterly ridiculous. I've never seen ours go higher than 78, and I've only seen that once or twice. For us, a dewpoint of 77 is exceptionally high. A dewpoint in the 80s is unimaginably high....and is exactly the type of dewpoints often seen in hot and humid Florida....so you have their humdity and heat index, but without the sunny beach, the ocean, the seashells or the citrus fruit. : ) If 84 is not a record dewpoint for y'all, I don't want to know what your record highest dewpoint ever would have been. The 84 is just completely mind-boggling. I linked the NOAA Heat Index Calculator. You can plug in your numbers and see what NOAA says your HI is. I'm going to do it tomorrow and see if my OK Mesonet Heat Index is the same as NOAA's would calculate with the same numbers. Since your airport is calculating the heat index, I cannot imagine they are not using NOAA's formula, so you have to believe their numbers. Love the picture of Bailey in the snow. My lab loves the snow...so fun to watch him run around in it. Outside, I'm used to weathering storms without dh-can't tell you how many times he's been heading home and gotten stranded, poor guy. My kids and I are fine...warm and toasty. I made a huge batch of marinara sauce and meatballs yesterday in case we lost power (I could reheat on gas range) then made a batch of cookies today with my youngest. Just started a wood fire, so we are cozy here and waiting on the final blast. Supposed to get 2-4" in the next few hours. Dh is currently standing on the train platform waiting on his train. Had a brief scare in Newark...first no available gates so they waited on runway for nearly an hour, then couldn't get the jetway connected to the plane b/c of all the snow and ice. I thought he was going to miss the train. Thankfully he texted me he's there on the platform so should arrive in MD in about 2.5 hrs. Hurray! And just got word school closed again tomorrow. Extra long weekend for my kids. They already have Monday and Tuesday off for winter break!

well, here I am, north of the metro, and it is snowing.

It was one of those on-and-off warnings. One day they thought it would hit us hard, and then another day they said it would go farther south and then they came back and said we 'might' get 1" to 4" but they were leaning more toward the 1". So, here we sit with over 6" on the ground (I haven't measured it lately) and more falling.

The problem is that the forecast models were all over the place, and the meteorologists had to decide which model or models they had the most confidence in. A lot of them chose the wrong one! LOL

It is a wet snow and our temps have hovered between 29 and 32 degrees all afternoon, so some of it has melted even as more has fallen.

It is quite lovely but I hope it goes away soon. My Dixondale onions ship next week.

All the birds in southern OK are currently eating out in the yard.....we're having a wild bird convention with everything from goldfinches (several dozen of them at three finch feeders) to cardinals, blue jays, blue birds, starlings, black-capped chickadees, doves, sparrows, crows, grackles, etc. There are birds everywhere.

I need to go outside and let the 'garage dogs' out to run and play. I've been letting them out for about 15 minutes every couple of hours all day long. They like the snow, but they don't like it for long.

I'll measure the snow while I'm out.

Down in the D-FW area, I believe today's snowfall makes this the snowiest year since sometime in the 1970s.

I know sleet and snow flurries have fallen in the College Station, TX, area and than across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and into northern Florida. They should have real snow in some of those places tonight and tomorrow. Every day it seems like someone in the USA is having snow, and I guess this is the southern states' turn.

Dawn it's called "Global Warming". Read where someone built an igl00 in Washington, DC and put a sign up that said Al Gore's house. LOL. Looks like we will have a cool spell again Sunday but some nice days around it. Been watching the critters. Think in the next 8-14 days we are going to see another storm or two. Will keep watching them. But they are showing early signs something is around the corner. They don't want to mislead me. As I feed them. Unlike the NWS where I can't even say anything directly to them. Jay

I believe the igloo is the work of OK Senator Jim Inhoffe. The "global warming" crowd still believe this winter's weather is due to global warming???? I'm looking forward to some of that warming over the next few days. We still have quite a bit of snow on the ground and lots of mud. Jan

I just love how the hot weather is the fault of Global Warming and so is the cold weather.....I guess GW takes the blame for anything and everything?

We had local igloos on the news tonight :) They were built by local kids who must have had a snow day. They tried to have school and then it started snowing and ruint everything.

Y'all, I am watching the Sun-Mon forecast closely. Saturday is supposed to be nice....in the 50s, so all the snow can turn to mud right in front of our eyes.

Maybe we all should move somewhere nice and sunny and warm....like the Gulf Coast....how about Mississippi or Alabama or Florida? Oh, no, wait...they have snow in their forecast tonight or tomorrow. Let's just stay here. Winter has to end sooner or later.

Light snow fell until sometime after 11 p.m. last night. I don't really have a good measurement of it yet, but we had a little over 7" the last time I checked it yesterday evening. The light snow might not have added much more to that total.

Marshall County is reporting 9-9.5" this morning, so they likely won the prize for the most snow, and I think it was in the Oakland or Madill area.

Down at D-FW Airport where DH worked all night until 5 a.m., they set a new 24-hour snowfall record of 12.5" of snow, breaking the preious record of 12.4", set in Fort Worth in 1964. I was 5 years old and lived there then and I remember playing in that snow at the park across the street from our house. That was a snowfall record that lasted a long, long time.

We are just a little below freezing right now and expected to go above freezing by 9 a.m., so the snow should melt off fairly rapidly and with a forecast high for tomorrow in the 50s, I think we'll be back soon to our usual Winter of 2010 Mud.

I hope this is the last snow we see here this winter, but I'm not betting on it.

Sheesh, you hogged all of the snow, Dawn.

A friend of mine in DFW said they got 7" or so, so I guess the two of you co-hogged it. ;-)

I swear, I did everything in my power to send the snow to you. Are you sure you and Steve haven't secretly installed a snow shield over your property?

We ended up with 8" in our area and Haslet, which is a bit north of Fort Worth had 14.5".

It never got very cold here at our house so some of the snow melted almost as soon as it hit the ground, even as more continued to fall.

At one point, the D-FW metroplex had over 200,000 without power, and DH and DS both had really busy days at work since snow and ice bring huge headaches to airports.

It is 44 degrees now on our front porch and sunny (so nice to see the sunshine) so it is melting very rapidly and our entire yard is a big lake with splotches and blotches and patches of snow here and there. In the shaded areas, the snow isn't melting off nearly as quickly.

You can have all the snow that falls next time if you want it. With about 16 or 17" here so far this winter, I'm done with the snow. I want spring, but there are disturbing signs of more winter in some of the forecasting models.

It is hard to get into a serious, hard-core seed-starting mood when it is snowing. Believe me...I've tried.
