Hmmm let's see:

The first rose is finally out: Stanwell Perpetual. It's usually the first, and again this year it's out. I think we are just a few days ahead of schedule.

Jacques Cartier is looking very nice.

Altissimo also has a bloom, and many other roses will probably show color later this week. Otherwise:

Rhodies

Irises galore still

Plox (all over the place, a very welcome weed)

Siberian Iris

Spirea (finishing)

Lupine

I am sure I forget a couple things!

Roses: Blaze, A Shropshire Lad, Golden Showers, Camelot, Climbing Peace, R. chinensis from seed, Rugosas, hybrid teas ready to pop.

Chionanthus retusus. If you don't have it, get it.

Siberian Iris, Iris reticulata

Dianthus in all shapes, sizes, fragrances.

Baptisia, regular old Sage, Chives and Echinacea in the herb area.

Rozanne geranium. I still love it. Others going strong, as well.

One Dicentra spec. hanging on. Vestiges of one last tree peony.

English Wood Hyacinths

Probably more but a bit rushed this morning :-)

My husband finally finished the bluestone patio in our new hot tub area...yay! Now I have to rework some of my brick edging in that garden and shuffle some plants around to soften the patio edge. Then I'll add some containers and wall decor on the new fence and side of the house. A trip to Homegoods may be in my future. I've decided to remove the weeping cherry. It's taking up too much room and has developed a rather unattractive form-not worth the space for maybe two weeks of flowers in the spring. In it's place, maybe a japanese maple or a conifer like that Korean fir 'Horstmans Silberlocke' I've been lusting after for years in Monique's garden. Earlier this week I picked up a bunch of tomato cages. This will be the year I venture into vegetables, cherry and grape tomatoes in pots on the patio. I also plan to modify the cages for dahlias-maybe keep them somewhat upright this year. Usually I have all my containers done by now but I'm still plugging along. A few intense hours of shoveling and dashing around with a wheelbarrow last night made a nice dent in the compost pile. Like Patty, I always put off mulching. Usually it's because I just want to find one or two more plants to put in the ground. A few years ago I discovered this really nice fine chipped pine bark mulch. It's great for perennial beds because it stays loose and breaks down the soil quickly. Unfortunately it only comes in 3 cubic foot bags. Yesterday I picked up the first of what will probably be a few loads of 10 bags. For the wilder areas and shrub borders I'll get a truckload of shredded bark...as soon as I get rid of that compost. Tomorrow Mindy (arbo retum) and her husband are stopping by for a garden visit and then out to dinner in Hartford. Thanks, Dee. Yes, that's it. Haha on the height. When you gave it to me, it was just about our height. I had to tilt it across the back seat and open the window for it to fit in my car. Then, on the trip home, it was raining harder, so I closed the window... on the tallest branch....wasn't thinking. Now, it's just below 5 feet tall. It's still beautiful with so much more flowers this year. Plus, the bees like the flowers! molie, the Hellebore and Oenothera 'Siskyou' and doing great. The Hellebore bloomed earlier this year with burgundy flowers! I didn't take a picture....don't know why. The Oenothera smells so wonderful. -Tina

This week, I have a lot in bloom - still going strong are rhodies & azaleas, yellow iris - Swazi Princess took a wind beating, so she's in a vase now - in the front yard. In the back, the columbines still look fabulous, as does geum, geranium Claridge Druce, (some other geraniums starting, too) and Flore Pleno poppy. I also have a rhody I planted from a rooting 8 years ago (maybe 9) that is blooming for the first time. This one is pink, more toward the purple, than the ones in front, which are baby pink (I didn't pick them, the original landscaper did), so I am thrilled that it's different.

New blooms this week: Bright red with black markings Pizzicato poppy, apricot polemonium doing very well, Sweet William starting, and nemesia.

We'll see what all this rain & wind does to everything, though - my linaria, which was blooming strong in my deck boxes, is toppling over. I'll try cutting it back and hope it produces more blooms.

Wow, this has got to be the peak in everyone's garden, right? So many great sounding flowers! Here's my list, from memory, since it's dark out.

Woodies: late lilacs, enormous old red rhodies, swamp azalea, kousa dogwood, viburnum (American cranberry), carolina jessamine, red wigela, purple smoke bush, clematis montana rubra. Yellow-variegated sambucus is almost open, kerria japonica is just finishing up. Some of the early hydrangea are budding up - the white with enormous blooms (I call it Dolly Parton, but I think it might be Limelight?) and a division of preziosa that's sitting in a pot waiting for me to cart it up to Mindy.

Perennials: siberian iris, rampant canadian anemone, red masterwort, columbine, money plant, heuchera (a dozen types), sea thrift, pinks, camassia, allium (some nifty new ones this year), nepeta, purple mullien, lots of columbine (red canadian and wild blue), wild daisies, sweet woodruff, pink geranium, wood hyacinths, foxglove. Oh, yeah, Crambe cordifolia - what a wild and wooly thing that is, a potted division is blooming as is another half that's in the ground. The peonies are about to burst, I hope they hold off until the rain stops!

Annuals: my favorite is pink gazania, will bloom all summer and has the nicest silvery foliage. Lots of tender salvia and those nifty blue-eyed white daisies, Osteospermum fruticosum.

I just love reading about what everyone has in bloom!

My peonies bloomed, only 3 this year. The poor things definitely need to be moved to a sunnier spot.
