Did I lose my agastaches?

I planted two agastaches last year and they did beautfully--very full with lots of flowers up until the edge of winter. I didn't prune them back until March. Should I be seeing signs of their return yet?

Darn! I'm pretty sure they were aurantiaca. Thank you for the info gardengal48.

Depends on type :-) Other than A. foeniculum, which seems to be tolerant of a wider range of conditions, agastaches are xeric plants that just don't seem to be able to withstand our winter wetness, despite how well-drained your soil may be. Most salvias are another common low water perennial that just don't winter well here. It's not a matter of cold hardiness but rather just the consistent wetness of the soil. And this winter/spring has been wetter than most :-)

After numerous attempts with Agastache rupestris or the aurantiaca hybrids and salvias like 'Hot Lips' or any of the greggiis (autumn sages), I tend to treat these as annuals rather than reliable perennials for our area and replant as required.

I'm in SE Michigan and only about 2/3 of my hostas have eyes emerging, and no leaves have unfurled yet. I read on a Master Gardener's website that soil temperature is about 8 degrees lower than the air temp, so that may be a factor; the denser the shade, the lower the soil temp, I would guess. Most of mine are in pretty dense shade. I do recall that last year Patriot, Minuteman, Mr. Big and Cat's Eye were very slow to emerge, and sure enough they are all currently no-shows (with several others). I can't clear my one bed yet of the pine needles that fell over the winter because I don't want to step on anyone! So, for me, I just have to be patient and I can't give up on any hostas this early in the season. I did begin keeping a log this year of when different hostas began showing because otherwise I start to really worry when I see the pictures posted here of other people's hostas all ready looking good!! -Vivian

Airport showing 32F here, while i showed 29F. Had a thin layer of ice on the bird bath. Not any damage i can tell of, but i covered everything i could. One lesson i learned again is to not put out tomatoes so early. Mine looked perfect in the greenhouse, and after putting them out 2 weeks ago, they look horrible. Another lesson is to buy a huge hoophouse and grow under plastic! Screw frost/rain/disease/insects. I keep tropicals in my unheated greenhouse and they have done great The wx outlook looks very bad, with cool temps and lots of rain/clouds this week. Warmth is not coming anytime soon (7-10 days) to the state of Wisconsin :(

Well said, Lin. :-) Jord, due to the number of tubers you have, you might consider putting a layer of moist (not wet) potting mix in the bottom of a big plastic tub, putting a thick layer of tubers, moist mix, tubers, moist mix... Think parfait. "Everyone likes parfait." Top it all off with a couple loose shopping bags, to keep some of the moisture in but to not invite mold. Don't put the lid on. Check in three weeks, then pull out each tuber to examine it for an eye or sprout. As Lin said, you'd be amazed where eyes pop up when you could have sworn the tuber was a dud. I have gone through my 'dud' crate four times in the last couple months, every time taking out around a third of the tubers that decided to sprout. Granted, these are mostly tubers that I saw potential eyes in the fall, but there was a good number of "oh, what the heck, let's wait and see" tubers, too. Good luck, CiCi

I've had exactly the same experiences with these and the salvia microphylla/greggii hybrids, which is sad because I'm completely cuckoo for salvias; however, agastache cana is another one that might come back for you, it does for me. Very nice plant...

Do you think it would help to put a cloche over these for the winter? I just ordered one and was SO hoping I could make it happy in my yard!
