What is best day of the year to visit Arnold Arboretum?

Good morning.. :-)

I know some of you have mentioned enjoying the AArboretum. They are having their lilac Sunday this weekend, Mother's Day. I was thinking it might be a nice day to go, but I am sure we have gone on Lilac Sunday in the past and it gets pretty crowded and parking is awful. I was thinking of skipping it and going at another time. Anyone have a favorite season or day that they enjoy the Arboretum on?

There really is something to see at the AA every single day of the year, including the dead of winter. But if it's flowering trees and shrubs you're after, then anytime in spring is a good bet.

And to miss the crowds on Lilac Sunday, go on a weekday a few days before. You'll have all the beauty to share with just a few others.

Of course, that assumes Lilac Sunday falls during peak lilac season. That date has been getting earlier, according to the AA's own records. But you really can't go wrong in spring at the AA. It is a sight that people come from around the world to see and we have it as our own backyard.

I was there on Tuesday, and the azaleas along the "Chinese Path" are glorious! Schlippenbachis in full bloom, vaseyis with colored buds, fruit trees fabulous, and lilacs not quite ready. Maybe they'll be ready by Sunday? I would go Monday if I were you!

The front, sides and half of the back look gorgeous, but most of this stuff is going into the other half of the back. I just evicted most of the kid stuff, including the gigantic fort they never use, so it's go-time back there. Once it grows in and the mosquitos disappear, we're going to want to live back there. Does anyone in the Dallas area need lantana? I've got way too much lemon cream and peach, and you're welcome to take some. I might make you take a portulaca hanging basket, too :-)

I agree with checking with the Vet first. If you get the OK, then I would visit regularly. Dogs can get depressed when in the hospital and a visit can help. I remember when our Bessie (RIP) was in the hospital after her neck surgery. The Vets thought it best that we did not visit her for the first several days. After the 2nd day, they asked us to come in to discuss her prognosis as she was not improving. We were allowed to see her at that time and she lifted her head up for the first time since her surgery. In her case, it turned out that the visits were therapeutic for her. Good luck, Linda

Deer whistles don't work. First hand knowledge - they were all the rage for a while around here - but it didn't make any difference. They don't hurt though - who knows! If it works once for someone - that would be a plus. That sensation of having a deer in front of you is terrible. I have tried hard to enforce to my young drivers to HIT the deer, not to swerve or brake hard. They need to slow down, but not "lock" the brakes. (Nothing we have locks) Your first instinct is to swerve or stop fast, but that is more dangerous than hitting the deer. I have had a deer hit me! It ran out and ran into the side of my car! Huge herds here. I haven't seen it yet this year - but usually see it while I am harvesting. 70+ at a time. It is amazing to see.
